My grandparents had a living trust, which totally eliminated the need for probate, and they'd compiled a binder with phone numbers and account numbers for all their bank accounts, insurance policies, Social Security, etc. When my grandfather passed away, all I had to do was open to page one and start following the directions.

On the other hand, when I came home from a business trip and found my spouse dead on the floor from a massive heart attack, I was totally lost. It was utterly unexpected and he had nothing planned out. When the Sheriff asked where I wanted them to take the body, I just blurted out the name of the mortuary in the nearest town, which turned out to be horribly expensive. I had to hunt through his horrible mess of paperwork to find account numbers, and I got very lucky and managed to find a drive that had a password file on it. Fortunately most or all of his family had predeceased him because I didn't have any addresses or anything to contact them.

I don't have anything for myself, either. And I'll probably even more difficult to deal with. All my paperwork is locked up in a safe, but I keep the key in a hidden location that nobody else knows about. But my biggest worry is my animals. If anything happens to me, will anyone take care of them? In the summer they can feed themselves and will be fine without help for a while, as long as the water holds out. But in the winter, there's no grass and they need to be fed at least daily.

This. My kids can sort it out. I owe nothing. The sports cars, tools, videogame collection, movie collection, book collection, miniature collection, martial arts gear and weapons, they can keep what they want and sell the rest. Thousands of books and games. Classic MKII Supra. Nice E36 convertible. 30+ swords, stage and sharp.

But I'm only 73 and looking forward to the century mark.

I have some debt. Car loan, credit card and a personal loan from my bank. But I have no spouse and no cosigners so there isn't anyone who would be legally responsible for that debt, should I die tomorrow.

Your spouse is only legally responsible for debts after death if they were a cosigner for loans or credit cards. Another reason to have separate credit cards.

That depends entirely on which state you live in. I live in a community property state (CA) and debts incurred during the marriage are generally considered community debt.

Nay, but I think i'm good, no debt or anything, about the only thing that would cost my loved ones money would be a coffin and embalming I guess to look at my dead body lulz. I'd get buried on my reserve and one of my relatives would drive me to the community hall for a wake, then they would all carry me to the graveyard and bury my ass, yeah.

Yes. Got my will in order and filed, everything squared away. My only major outstanding debt is my house mortgage and that's now at about a third of the value of the house, so it would not be difficult for that bill to be settled by my next of kin.

With the amount of driving and camping trips I go on, I oughta write a will at least. If by default my assets goes to my mother and/or sister, I would not be concern though. Still, I'd like to at least ensure my organs get donated, my body cremated, and ashes scattered at some mountain peak.

WastelandCowboy posted...
Bills all paid-up?
Nope. Still have about $10k in car loans and other bills. I have about $200k in life insurance so after funeral expenses and whatnot, there oughta be enough left to cover my bills.

Both? Do anyone bury their ashes or typically keep em in urns/scatter them at sea? I might actually opt to not have a plot at a cemetery as I feel it is kinda a waste of space/money. After my nephews/nieces generation, I doubt any of their children will remember/know of me enough to visit my grave.

I will bury my mother next to my father in the same cemetery as my grandparents as that is what she wants (plus my parents already paid for the plot) but not sure if I'll want the same done to me.

I was talking with a friend of mine and he said his mother wants to be cremated then buried next to her late husband. I was like, "You don't need a urn, a cardboard box will do."

When my spouse passed away I had him cremated, and his ashes are in a wooden urn in my room. When I die I want to be cremated as well, our ashes mixed together then part of them scattered at sea (my SO loved dolphins and was in the Navy) and part scattered in Yosemite (my favorite place on earth). I'm a hopeless romantic, aren't I?

I also have urns for my dog and one of my horses.

There's a Scout camp in New Mexico, Philmont, that I have attended four times thus far. Once in my youth and three times as an adult leader. Between one particular peak at this camp and another particular peak at some local mountains, I am hoping my ashes will be scattered into the wind. I will just need to make sure I obtain permissions beforehand and get some volunteers willing to hike up to these peaks.
