The turnout is...not surprising. The democratic party is full of pessimism and Bernie is not an Obama-level speaker that is going to excite a large group. If he were 20 years older I'm sure he could be a bit more upbeat but to the general public he definitely looks and comes off as, well, old. People don't get excited for old people.
And it should definitely be noted Russia is still doing a lot to drive up the seedier idiots of Bernie's base to turn off potential voters. Their interference on all sides of the Democratic party is very real. They want division and a Trump re-election. Unfortunately, his re-election is more than probable simply due to the state of the economy. I still think its an easy call to say Trump loses the popular vote by even more this time but scores an electoral college victory. --- "First thing that crosses my mind: I didn't get any GameFAQs Karma yesterday." I mean how much is "a lot"?
Exit polls: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/02/06/how-age-gap-iowa-caucuses-shifted-since-2016/ Demo | 2020 | 2016 17-24 | 16% | 10% 25-29 | 8% | 8% 30-39 | 15% | 14% 40-49 | 12% | 10% 50-64 | 22% | 30% 65+ | 27% | 28% Like, yeah, the 17-24 demo sees a nice bump which seemingly comes at the expense of the 50-64 group but the others are about level. Sanders wins 17-24, 25-29, and 30-39. (25-29 is actually his best age group and is the only one where he - or anyone - wins an actual majority of voters rather than just a plurality.) Buttigieg wins 40-49 (though it's close, only +4) and then 50-64 big (Sanders is at 9% and at least doubled by everyone else in the Top 5.) And of course when you get to the 65+ group which remains the largest slice of the pie there it gets downright ugly. Sanders is at 4% (This is the only group Biden won at 33%) I do think it remains a topic of concern that Sanders continues to get annihilated among older voters. It's expected to a point, yeah, but the margins are just yikes. 50-64 and 65+ are the two largest demos there and combined to half the voters and he is in single digits in both. True that combined 49% is down from 58% in 2016 but Sanders seemingly hung better with Clinton in those groups (50-64: 34%-58%; 65+: 26%-69%) Maybe the most worrying thing is that last graphic in the WaPo article where they bundle Sanders/Warren/Yang vs Buttigieg/Biden/Klobuchar and Team Moderate is outperforming 2016 Clinton against Sanders among both the young voters and the old voters. (The Liberal group slightly wins on 30-39 and 40-49... but those are also the smallest demos with the exception of the smaller-range-than-the-rest 25-29) Again, Iowa is only one data point and I really hope it proves to be an anomaly. I'm just saying I think there is legitimate cause for concern for both the nominee in general and perhaps a bit more for Sanders's theory of the case. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? ... Also, I don't mean to derail from that discussion but as has become typical I have my "I watched the debate 8 hours late and react" post.
Probably one of the better debates? I felt I was more engaged with it this time. Anyway, first reaction has to be Steyer was auditioning for the next Snickers commercial, dude was fired up lol. It was like his rage meter was building at the start with no questions coming his way and then he finally went into overlimit, hijacked the discussion and just stayed in it until he finally mellowed a bit on the very last question of the debate. Felt that Warren and Sanders had the best night. Warren's answer on the race questions were the best of the bunch by far IMO and lmao the mic drop she had on Buttigieg to start it off. Sanders was on point too throughout. Biden... was hit or miss.. he spent a good chunk of the debate also fired up but with mixed results. Sometimes I felt the fire and passion landed very well - especially when he brought up the traumatic brain injuries suffered by the soldiers that Trump has been dismissing as "headaches" which I thought was probably the strongest moment of the debate until Warren nailed it later on. OTOH, I feel like sometimes it just came off poorly like with a lot of his "I WAS THE ONE who did X! I WAS THE ONE who did Y!" which even when true it just felt... weird, like getting yelled at. Klobuchar definitely had the most level and steady performance of the moderates IMO and seemed to particularly find her footing in the latter portion of the debate. Steyer was, as I said, fired up and the comedy moment of the debate for me was the raw betrayal he was emitting when Sanders interrupted his trying to grill Biden. lmao "Bernie I hear what you're saying but-!". Yang was pretty much an observer although I feel like he auto-lost for his answer on holding Trump accountable. But the biggest loser of the night IMO was Buttigieg. Everyone was after him again though it felt more subdued than last time around but I think the real damage done was the sequence of the moderator pressing him on disproportionate drug arrests in South Bend despite his repeated attempts to dodge (the rare moderator getting applause moment) and then Warren completing the obliteration with her "No." when she finally gave up and moved onto Warren asking if Buttigieg's answer was substantial. So... tl;dr: Winners: Warren, Sanders Did alright: Klobuchar Did okay, but it was uneven, and for the first time that may not have been enough: Biden You're not yourself when you're hungry: Steyer Attended: Yang Loser: Buttigieg --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? ... (Unfortunately) back to Iowa. I do think it's somewhat of concern - particularly for Sanders given the emphasis his message places on it - that turnout was basically level with 2016. 176k now versus 171k in 2016. Given a large crux of Sanders's argument is on a "political revolution" and a surge of young and disaffected voters... that objectively did not materialize here. Overall turnout was similar but the percentage of under 45 voters was up. That means old people didnt show up as consistently but younger voters kept turnout the same. Seems like a good sign to me. Though I guess this is based on the CNN poll, that WaPo one looks a little closer. But yeah it could also be a fluke due to the caucus. --- DPOblivion was far more determined than me. ...
