This was just reported on Serebii earlier:

The Pokmon Company's Pokmon of the Year promotion is live. If you search for Pokmon or Pokmon of the Year on Google, you will be able to put in a vote for your favourite Pokmon. This is separated into 8 categories, based upon region of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola and "Galar etc.", with Meltan and Melmetal being the etc. with Galar. Each day until 13:59 UTC on February 1st you can vote for a Pokmon in each category. The winner will be revealed on Pokmon Day

I've always wanted to see some kind of favorite Pokemon competition that wasn't limited to Japan only. Also, the voting ends on February 14th, not the 1st. This is a small error in Serebii's reporting of this event.

I haven't even fully decided on what I want to vote for yet. I have only Gen 2, 7, and 8 fully locked down at this point. For the other generations, I am finding myself having to weigh my options between voting for my number 1 favorite from those generations or vote for a slightly lesser favorite (but still in my top 10 for its generation) to give support to a Pokemon that won't do as well with the overall vote.

this was totally fascinating and made me realise several things, including how many pokemon I really love, and how many of my favourites I've somehow never used in a game!

also made me think about generation rankings design-wise for the first time. I'd go with 5 > 4 > 1 > 8 > 3 > 7 > 2 > 6, and the variation in quality is honestly pretty striking; some generations I was massively torn between lots, but gens 2 and 6 i actually struggled to find something I felt strongly about. in the end I went for this strange set:

Neat - I voted today. Not sure if I'll keep up, lots I love from the first 3 generations but dont really like many from anything after that.

It's sad seeing how pokemon went from somewhat resembling animals or creatures to now teapots and cheerios and garbage piles but they kinda ran out of ideas long ago.
