I'm not sure if it's common to refer to the second half of the series as season 2, but you should absolutely not read this if you haven't finished the entire anime.

I finally got around to it.

Very much did not like the ending "twist" Oh hey he changed the rule on him after the fact so he's just dead now through no fault of his own, but can't say I didn't like it overall.

You didn't read the second to last page, friend.

I read the page. The rule was still the added after he enacted the plan. Even if he told Ryuuk not to contact him for any reason, I am not satisfied with that at all.

The rule is literally not what killed him. The only thing it did was prevent the POTUS from accepting the notebook. He died on a whim because Ryuk was unhappy with how it turned out.

The ending is a bit weird. On page 85 Ryuk thinking to himself whether to tell Minoru about the new rule. It's internal monologue which means it is accurate and he ultimately decides against it because Minoru told Ryuk not to contact him anymore. If the rule was fake or didn't apply to Minoru, there was no reason to tell Minoru in the first place. So the rule should be real and apply to Minoru. However, at the end it shows Ryuk writing Minoru's name in a Death Note which suggests that Minoru did not die from selling the Death Note. I guess this still works out if Ryuk killed him just before Minoru would have died from breaking the rule or the rule isn't automatic and Ryuk was given the job of carrying out the punishment.

I was under the impression that Minoru could have lived had he been told about the rule and thus not taken the money. But since he told Ryuk not to contact him for any reason, Ryuk never told him the rule, and thus he died as soon as he got the money, as per the rule. Ryuk writing the name in the book was just him carrying out the punishment.

Ryuuk has a monologue about whether he should tell him or not, implying that the rule matters here...but then then ending is him writing his name down to coincidentally kill him right when the rule would take effect?

The only thing I can come up with here that makes any sense is that the rule is the Shinigami themself must kill the user and buyer if they sell the note by writing their name, which would mean my original point still stands, but...how would they do that if the buyer takes it....oooof, yeah that's a messy last couple of pages either way.

Really, one of those two pages has to go. It's a stretch for this to make sense at all of both of them are there.

You're overthinking this. It's simple.

The buyer and the seller both had the chance to not break the rule by not completing their end of the sale. Trump didn't die because he didn't take the Death Note. Minoru died because he DID take the money. The catch is that Trump knew how to not break the rule because Ryuk told him. Ryuk would have also told Minoru how to not break the rule, except... Minoru told him to never contact him again for any reason. Thus, Minoru broke the rule as soon as he took the money, and Ryuk dished out the punishment. Minoru's overconfidence in his "perfect plan" killed him.

Ryuk has his own Death Note that is different than the one Trump would have taken. He's holding two on the last page.

No, since one of the most important things is that Ryuk tells Light that he will at some point write Light's name in his own Death Note. And that's referenced by showing Light being the last/only other name on that page.

EDIT: Ryuk having his own Death Note is basically to still hold power over Death Note users.

It's been a LONG time to be fair, almost half my life.

Fwiw, I never really got the feeling that punishment for breaking a rule was having your name written in a Shinigami's note, specifically because Ryuk having his spare has always been a huge exception since chapter fucking one of the original series, but this is also the first time it's actually been relevant, since the only other actually breakable rules that came up in the series were the fake rules iirc

I just read that having no knowledge at all of anything else in the series

was neat

kinda curious what L is all about. without contextual knowledge of her background, all the parts with her in this one just felt like narration

Hmmm....I'm pretty sure I finished the whole thing. Light Yagami lost against Near in that warehouse, then he got shot a couple of times and died.

Thanks for sharing this, that was a good read. It's very interesting to see a take on this with today's technology and political atmosphere.

Minoru got robbed. Rule should have applied to all future Death Note holders. At least a good chunk of Japan will remember his work.

Shinigami can't use the Death Note to save someone else. If a Death Note user intentionally misspells a person's name when writing it in the Death Note 4 times, the user dies.
