Never read any Death Note but I was into this. Gonna be unoriginal and echo the opinion that the ending didn't really need to happen that way, though.

Its extreme bullshit that Ryuk didnt tell Minoru the new rule even though it was presumably added after his meeting with the Kingwhich was before Minoru told him to never contact him again.

Ryuk doesn't see the King before that point. The messenger tells him to see the King "when you're able to leave the side of your human." Which means Ryuk didn't go see him until Minoru handed over the Death Note. The rule gets added between that point and before he sees Trump. Ryuk specifically says "I actually got yelled at before I came here."

Oh good point, I read that as just when youre able, but yeah obviously it happened between.

Man, Minoru got screwed.

I'm actually totally fine with Minoru getting screwed if that's the price he had to pay for someone to finally outsmart Near.

I mean this original the character shows up and outsmarts literally every character in the universe so hard that he pisses off the God of Death who has to cheat to kill him. And he does this while helping a bunch of people, screwing over a world superpower, and not even using the note. That's more than a fair ending tbqh

The most likable Death Note characters getting screwed over by something they had no control over is tradition though

I understand people feelings about the ending, but the way I see it it's meant to be a Twilight Zone-esque punishment by fate. The Death Note is a cursed object. Whether you write it in it or not, attempting to use it will bring nothing but misfortune in the end. Minoru was clever, but even he couldn't outplay karma. That's simply the moral.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I felt like I was missing something.

I thought it was either to be old enough to open a bank account, or to live closer to the tv station. But I don't really know for sure.

Another possibility is to distance himself from the time he met Ryuk in the park that might have been caught on camera.

So he could already have a Yotsuba bank savingsaccount for two years instead of having just opened one when this stuff started.

I am almost completely unfamiliar with Death Note aside from the VERY basic premise, but I strongly agree with both of these posts. I thought the ending was precisely what needed to happen in order for this to be an interesting tale. If that doesn't happen then this is too clean.

I would go so far as to say it would be a pretty bad story if things didn't end how they did. Grand Kirby was right on the money, what's the moral or the point if this new guy just shows up, clowns on everyone and walks away squeaky clean after literally screwing with the gods to make bank?
