I really can't recommend any since I dislike bourbon (and bourbon barrel-aged beer by extension), but the Bruery seems to have a good selection of them.

I'm not sure how available their beers are where you live, though.

I don't really drink beer anymore, more of a tequila guy. But, when I did drink beer the only three brands I liked were: Dos Equis, Guiness, and Wells Banana bread beer. All of them are good, at least to me. Dos equis is more of a citrusy lager. Guiness is great with a hearty meal like steak. Wells has a very faint banana bread taste, that is nice as a dessert beer.

There are a huge amount of very good smaller breweries around the USA especially in areas like Denver and Portland.

The best advice anyone can give you is to go find a local pub that offers tasting flights of craft beers and try everything on the menu (possibly over multiple trips, depending on the size of the menu). Make note of what you like/dislike and why, and that'll give people something more to work with than "I like whiskey and don't like Bud Light."

I still really enjoy beer. I just don't drink it because of my diet. Cutting down on carbs helped me lose 60 lbs. and beer was a large contribution to my weight.

Most of my local breweries aren't the greatest. In the past I would just sample a bit of everything from the local liquor store.

It's going to be by far the most efficient way to narrow down your tastes. You certainly don't have to make a habit of getting them moving forward if you don't want to, but you should be trying a large variety of beers until you figure out what sort of things you like, and doing that one pint at a time isn't a very effective use of your time or money.

Tasting flight=/=tasting event. Many pubs with a decent selection of beers will offer the option to order several smaller glasses of different varieties, which is called a tasting flight. It's basically the same as ordering a pint, only instead of a pint of one beer, you get a variety in different glasses that add up to a pint. A craft cidery back home offered four 4 oz glasses of cider for $10 (canadian), which was fantastic for trying out their menu, especially where they rotated new varieties through on a regular basis. That's the sort of thing you're looking for, not a dedicated tasting event with a planned menu, and you should be able to find a pub that does that easily enough (especially if you get into craft brewpubs).

Maybe. There was a clerk at a gas station I used to go to on my way to work. He was the typical hipster, full outfit and everything. Every time I went he always was taking about this new pub or ale he was drinking. So I always picture him with that sorta stuff.
