You would be wrong though but you do you. If someone is bothered that much about someone on the internet that they must block or ignore them then they clearly need thicker skin unless it's for serious matters like death threats and whatever.

It's mostly to prevent harassment.

If someone follows you into every single topic to shit on you no matter what you're actually posting, you can ignore them but everyone else is still going to see them attacking you, and they can essentially accuse you of all manner of things that you now can't defend yourself against because you can't see them. You won't even be able to mark them for harassment (which would be perfectly valid) because you don't even know it's happening.

The idea of block is that you essentially remove yourself from them even knowing you exist, with the assumption that they'll eventually get bored of posting about you and move on with their lives.

In practice, it doesn't really work because most of the really shitty trolls or obsessed harassers have multiple accounts anyway, so they'll just log into a different account to see what you're up to. Or will just make shitty little snide comments about you every now and then in entirely unrelated topics just because they know you're still out there even if they can't see you.

Actually no it isn't. Block is supposed to stop the person that blocks from seeing people's posts they don't want to see. It is NEVER supposed to stop somebody from seeing other's posts.

but to answer the Topic Q, sure it's okay, some people would just rather not interact with some other people. I don't use the ignore function, but I do think the block function is kind of a weak move, making it so certain users can't see your posts at all is like hiding.

It useful for spiteful users that just go around reporting people.

No they are not. Someone putting someone on ignore doesn't make the other person not see their posts. Blocking however does. I see no point in the block feature when ignore was already a thing.

I agree for the most part. I can see where the block feature could be useful if someone is harassing you, but honestly I feel like that is what the mods and the report system is for. If someone is harassing you, you report them and the mods take care of it. Ive seen the block feature here used more to try and troll other people than to protect them.

Ignore is basically making the person who is annoying you cease to exist in your world, block is making yourself cease to exist in their world. Similar outcome, two entirely different mechanics.

You can argue over whether or not they should be CALLED something different from what they're called now, but that's not really the same thing.

You go to your name in the top right, and go to my friends in the drop down box. Once there, change the list from my friends to ignore. And that will show you...

In fact, I highly ENCOURAGE the practice.

The only people who would be bothered by such a thing.....are the people who are getting blocked and ignored by others.

And why would that be? Why would someone have ignored/blocked you?

Deal with it.

I grow sick of these message boards where people spend more time whining about trolls and actively engaging with them.........than actually having concrete discussions and civil conversations.

If someone is bothering you....ignore/block them.

Don't keep them around because "they entertain you" or some shit. Stop engaging with them. Stop feeding them. Stop arguing with them. Stop stalking them around the boards. Stop tagging them negatively so you can dwell on a negative interaction you had with them years ago.

Let. Them. Go.

Take the higher ground.

Be the mature one.

Ignore and/or block them.

And this is where you try to say that ignoring/blocking someone is the immature thing to do.

I see it differently.

Ignoring/blocking someone who you know is a toxic individual....is preventing you from dealing with their crap in the future. You are fixing the problem by preventing the problem.
