but to answer the Topic Q, sure it's okay, some people would just rather not interact with some other people. I don't use the ignore function, but I do think the block function is kind of a weak move, making it so certain users can't see your posts at all is like hiding.

Most of the people I have on ignore are people who are absolutely uninteresting and ignoring them keeps their topics from cluttering my feed

Sure. If they want to live in their own little bubble then that's their call. Plus some users straight up harass other users.

I don't because I don't care enough to use such pointless features. I also hate censorship so won't inflict that upon others. It also makes some topics less coherent when I ignore folk.

With that said the block feature is the most stupid thing this site has implemented simply because it's basically giving people the choice to put themselves on my block list or not and in turn makes it so I can't read someones posts unless I sign out/someone quotes them. This makes some topics miss posts and again seem less coherent at times. I don't see when the ignore feature wasn't enough.

It is censorship. You're blocking someone opinions and thoughts while also blocking them from seeing your posts. Anything that is not viewed in it's true forum is censorship.

Anyways, to the topic, I think its fine to ignore somebody. I generally only put trolls on mine(based off of posting habits and not politics) with the small handful of non troll users who are just too annoying. Some people call it weak, but real weakness is walking into a topic making the same "get a job" level insult to somebody you clearly have an issue with over and over. Though, I wouldn't be responding to these people either way, blocked or not, I see no reason to not do it. It makes the board better for me. However, I will admit, people with 200+ blocked accounts who put anybody who even looks at them the wrong way on there have a problem and likely need to leave this site for a minute.

i blocked sarcasthama because i was sick of seeing him quote me minutes after i posted just to bitch.... would post right after me dozens of times. once he took a screenshot of a post i edited seconds later, then posted it less than a minute after the hour mark had passed... another time he posted in a religious topic saying he was waiting for me to make a comment against religion. wouldn't believe me when i said i saw the topic hours ago, and decided not to post.

ignore wasn't enough, because i still saw them occasionally when i got logged out

I've mostly just got Duckbear ignored so his spammy zero-content clickbait topics don't wind up cluttering my front page all the time. Other than that, I really only ignore really blatant gimmick/troll accounts.

Even some of the shittier posters occasionally have something interesting to say. Or can accidentally spark worthwhile conversations with other people. And it's not like it's all that difficult to ignore people who are mostly assholes anyway.

It's mostly to prevent harassment.

If someone follows you into every single topic to shit on you no matter what you're actually posting, you can ignore them but everyone else is still going to see them attacking you, and they can essentially accuse you of all manner of things that you now can't defend yourself against because you can't see them. You won't even be able to mark them for harassment (which would be perfectly valid) because you don't even know it's happening.

The idea of block is that you essentially remove yourself from them even knowing you exist, with the assumption that they'll eventually get bored of posting about you and move on with their lives.

In practice, it doesn't really work because most of the really shitty trolls or obsessed harassers have multiple accounts anyway, so they'll just log into a different account to see what you're up to. Or will just make shitty little snide comments about you every now and then in entirely unrelated topics just because they know you're still out there even if they can't see you.
