yeah, the "winner takes all" kind of system is really great, as we're seeing with donald fucking trump in office right now.

trump also showed us that "you can win the popular vote and still lose" is great, while i'm at it.

The electoral college is dumb and I would absolutely support a national popular vote deciding the presidency, but thats a small part of system of government. The genius of the American system is in its checks and balances (albeit with the one blind spot of the possibility a legislature willingly allowing itself to be trampled by a president, as the Senate is trying to do now).

Best system of government, guaranteed rights, historically most open to immigrants (which has a lot to do with our economic power; we take in the best from around the world), etc etc etc. As much as Trump is trying to take a wrecking ball to what actually makes America great, the fact that hes only damaged the walls and not leveled everything is a testament to how well everything was set up.

Honestly, this is probably privileged wishful thinking. It's like Jacob Rees-Mogg saying that the UK had the best judicial system in the world, and the US was #2. That's possible for a patrician like him, maybe, but absolutely false for poor people and middle class people.

US rights are remarkably legalistic. You have the right to have a police officer tell you that you have the right to remain silent, but police are allowed to lie to you. You have the right to be defended by an attorney but if you speak with your attorney for all of five minutes before pleading guilty because the prosecutor offered a deal where you plea guilty and immediately go home (or plead not guilty and go to jail to wait for trial) no one will take a second look at it. You have the right to kill an preborn baby but you don't have the right to place any marijuana at all into your body.

The one area where I do think the US is really great on is our electoral system, which delivers an exceptional level of separation and balance of powers.

To be clear Im absolutely not saying that Americas perfect or that it shouldnt be criticized (I criticize it all the time!). What I am saying is that if I had to pick any country to have be born in Id choose America every time; no contest.

Our country is number one in GDP, has the strongest military to afford protection of its citizens and their freedoms/beliefs (which is the government's utmost goal), and averages out to be number 1 when everything else is all considered as well.

Their may be countries with better quality of life or countries with less proverty or better education or whatever. But, when all is said and done, no country has the ability to boast what Americans have all around. Hell, no country can say they are safe from being taken over besides maybe one or two. Our country is miles ahead of other countries that we can afford to help other nations and protect them so they can feel protected also.

We are in the position so far ahead that we can be a generous state (though maybe we shouldn't be).

You can say har har Sweden number 1 health care they are the best obvs, but that's silly to think they are the best country because of that. If we allowed it, Russia could overtake Sweden tomorrow and assimilate it. No country that can defend itself and it's freedoms if needed to can reasonably be even in the same category.

Heres my idea to fix the Supreme Court while were on the topic of Checks and Balances.

Every Justice gets one 18-year term, nominated by the President and confirmed by BOTH the House and Senate. One appointment is done every odd-numbered year, with the 9 seats rotating.

It would still be 5-4 today in favor of Republican appointees, but at least its not a system you can game like the one we have now.

real genius would be the dutch system where multiple parties work together in the government. the american equivalent would be the democrats, republicans and green party (or whatever) all working together on compromises, instead of one republican asshole running the show in the white house.

checks and balances seems nice, but it means absolutely nothing when you have a senate that's just there to suck trump's dick (as we're seeing right now with the impeachment bullshit).

Well, America did have parties cooperating and working together for decades. But it was producing bad results, so the voters decided to change things and voted for more adversarial politicians. The beauty of the US system is that while the checks and balances can seem to prevent anything from getting done, when you have truly massive support (a majority of the states, a majority of the districts, a majority the states weighted by population (for the electoral college), and have had the above for a long enough time to get the courts on your side), you can act decisively.

it's both a blessing and a curse. it can lead to great things with someone like bernie in power but it just takes one lunatic in power for WWIII to break out.

My life has been pretty good, but its pretty presumptuous of you to assume that. As it happens I have an immediate family member who did face life a threatening medical issue and who was well served by the current system (which I know has a ton of huge problems, but which could also absolutely get a lot worse with a botched revolutionary change).

LOTM, unless your relative was a super rich person that got the treatment they needed by being able to pay for it out of pocket, like when Saudi princes travel here for treatment they can't get anywhere else, they would have probably gotten as good or better treatment in any first world country. And it would have cost less everywhere else.

If it is so much better, yes. He would easily be able to have a much better quality of life wherever he goes based on what he is preaching.

Truth is, you all know you live in the best country in the world, but you also want to feel like you struggle (which is lol compared to the rest of the world's struggles) and are somehow a victim also.

Like, it isn't even a debatable point. The United States is the best country in the world. No where you go will your country as a whole be better than what you are afforded here. It may have qualities you deem more to your needs that it excels in better, but no country provides everything we can.

There's some benefits to being large though. Sweden specifically has high immigration numbers but I'm sure the US is more diverse than a lot of European countries, which imo is a massive benefit. This doesnt make up for the poor quality of life disparities here but that's why we try to improve it.
