A friend once asked what kind of cheese he should pick up for a BBQ and I suggested American cheese as a joke, but he thought I was being serious and picked some up.
I hadn't previously realized that asking for American cheese could be seen as anything other than sarcasm.

American cheese you get from the deli is real cheese

any kind of single slice cheese product is gross though

Nothing beats it on a classic diner style burger. Also have a lot of nostalgic love for it in a grilled cheese. But yeah, that's about all its good for.

As far as I know it's basically the same thing. It's a "cheese product". Its essentially cheese milk and gelatin

No. It is an abomination. Real cheese is 100% always better, if you aren't vegan anyway.

And sadly the vegan alternatives aren't much better than the fake sliced shit I've found.

But what if it doesn't?

Yet to find any of that "sliced plastic" that actually tastes nice - never even really liked it on burgers and always prefered a nice slice of cheddar or something.

No, American Cheese is real cheese. Pasteurized process cheese product is NOT cheese, which is why they cant call it cheese

Yeah it's fine. I'm only eating it melted on a grilled cheese or on top of burger, though. Unmelted it has a weird gummy/clingy texture. Lots of chefs really like it for burgers, too, because it develops a creaminess when heated whereas lots of real cheese, when heated, will have the fat separate and get even greasier.

No man, all american cheese is a pasteurized cheese product by definition.

I'm not saying there aren't higher quality products, but kraft single slices and boars head american cheese are essentially the same thing when it comes to processing. The biggest difference is quality of ingredients.

prefer the tillamook pepperjack cheese in slices or if i'm feeling for a more intense flavor the vintage white extra sharp cheddar aged for 24 months. it has a strong flavor but it costs several dollars more. works very well on burgers or chicken.

though the preferred use is on cheese plates with crackers.

Jack cheeses are too mellow for burgers and cheddar doesn't melt well enough. American is perfect for thin patty burgers, it melts into every crook and nanny and has just enough flavor. It's literally what it's designed for.

Kraft Singles and Velveeta, neither of those are actually American cheese. American cheese is a blend of cheddar and colby meant to be easy to melt and have a mild flavor.

There's a reason the cheese industry tried to have processed cheese foods not be able to be called cheese.
They are both American cheese, says so on the front
