i got way into visual novels about a year ago because i realized i'm not really that into video games anymore, and they are kind of like video games but they're not really high-commitment like video games.

what ones do you guys like? for the aforementioned reason i tend to go for ones that are mostly or entirely narrative-based (so more novel) but some game-oriented ones like 999 or danganronpa can be fun

I'm not a fan of visual novels... persay (it's more about the gameplay aspects, I should say I don't like Visual Novels that are just an anime splash screen for several minutes at a time)...

But of those, I think my favourite is "Chuusotsu! 1st Graduation: Time After Time" ... which really gets wild near the end.

But for visual novels with gameplay, Long Live the Queen is the pinnacle!

Danganronpa. Only played the first two so far, but (not true spoilers) - 1st game, the plot beats were on point, and the gameplay was fun. 2nd game, one word - Nagito.

For the most part, Ive only played the most popular ones. Ace Attorney, Danganronpa and Zero Escape. I started 428 Shibuya Scramble, but I had a hard time getting into it. I should try it again sometime...

For those who have played them, whatre everyones thoughts on Corpse Party and Steins;Gate?

Some of my favorites are the Ace Attorney series, The Danganronpa series, and the Zero Escape series. I believe the same people who made the Danganronpa series made the Zero Escape series. Both are awesome. And I love the Ace Attorney series. There may be some others that I like, but those are my favorites...

I've played a ton of VN's. Mostly Eroge, but some of the best ones are. There's the censored all-ages verisons of most of the great ones for prudes, though.

My favorite would be the Muv-Luv trilogy, though the first two are pretty average. It doesn't really start getting good until a fair bit into the third game, but, much like Clannad, you pretty much have to play through the bland setup to get to the good stuff. Also, Muv-Luv has to be one of the dumbest names for a VN; they literally could have named it "Alternate realities story with mechs" and it would have been better. =P

The Danganronpa series is great as well, but the gameplay portions can be pretty annoying. You don't need a rhythm or driving minigame in a VN...

Muv-luv easily. It's a great series of stories about alternate realities. Takes a bit to get started though since the point/purpose of the first is literally to establish the main character as a generic VN character. Be warned it gets DAAAAARRRRRKKKK!!! Like, in the anime...

You get to see one of the girls beg for her friend to shoot her so she doesn't have to feel the pain of being eaten alive only for said friend to be unable to do so... And you get to SEE her get eaten alive to top it off!

Far from the only dark/gory moment.

The House in Fata Morgana is pretty great and I would consider it my favorite "stand alone" VN I guess (ignoring that A Requiem for Innocence is sold separately). It's just so delightfully tragic and every aspect of the story just clicks together by the end so well.

However the When they Cry as a whole series with call backs and themes that play off of each other is probably my outright favorite, kinda hard to recommend a total 200 odd hour long story to someone though.

Recently I tried reading something newer and less talked about and picked up this one called... Heart of the Woods or something like that and my God was it bad, avoid at all costs. I mean I didn't finish it or anything but I saw enough to know it was bad.

I am going through the same thing!
For some reason I do not enjoy video games as much as I used to so I have been reading Manga and Graphic Novels.

Finished reading Goodnight Punpun by Inio Asano about two weeks ago, I thought it was amazing. Been reading some of his other works too, they are pretty dark and/or sad but hey not every story needs to be happy.

I have also recently been reading Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Monstress by Marjorie Liu. Both very good and unique reads. The art is fantastic in Monstress too.

Mob Psycho 100 by ONE is another of my favorites as well. Same guy who wrote One Punch Man. If you ask me Mob Psycho is one of the best manga I have ever read and one of the best Anime I have watched.

Oops, just saw you said "visual novel", not "graphic novel".
Reguardless, these are good reads.

There were others but they are lost in the thousands of games on my steam list (the monster/girl one wasn't on steam though).

I wasn't interested in visual novels until I played Doki Doki Literature Club!, which I became interested since then. It is my favorite visual novel but another visual novel I enjoyed is DUL (a Visual Novel/RPG hybrid made in Ren'py, it's impressive incorporating RPG elements in a visual novel but comparing it to other RPGs, its gameplay is not that good, but still an impressive attempt in Ren'py).

If the Ace Attorney games count (they are adventure novel games), then that too. And Corpse Party if that counts too.

I know I have played many more, but yeah, don't remember them much. I remember the queen one cause I played it a few times with different outcomes. I remember magic Diary because it was more like a VN/RPG and I liked it. Wish I could remember other ones but they are not generally on the top of my list to play, and I have just had a huge backlog of games for years lately.

Saya no Uta. Haha. It's definitely an experience, but it's not for prudes or the fainthearted.

As for what qualifies as a VN; It's becoming a pretty annoying trend in gaming genres that everything that isn't a blatant copy-paste of a 30 year old game gets dubbed by purists as not fitting in a genre. Danganronpa is a VN. Plenty of "Rogue-likes" are just as good, or better, than Rogue was, and lots of games that aren't copy-paste of Wizardry back in the early '90s can still be a DRPG, et cetera. I generally look at what the game's main point is to determine what genre it is, and what most to compare it to. Like Danganronpa, or even Utawarerumono, qualify as VN, because that's the main point of the game. Sure, there's some puzzle or RPG elements in there, but they aren't the main point of the game, and take a back seat to the VN portions.

Obviously, that's just my opinion, but it makes the most logical sense to me.
