Hey, I had this happen once!

When I was in the Air Force, my job was Health Services Management.

This was a pretty diverse job where you could work medical records, trauma team, or even IT in a hospital.

tl;dr i got into Medical IT, got my certification, and overall was crushing it.

Then a couple years later, literally weeks after being told I was taking over the entire help desk, I was told I was being transferred to Outpatient Records, and the new guy who was actually going to be head of the Help Desk, who knew jackshit about IT, needed to be trained.

There was only one slot for an E-4, so we couldnt both be there, and apparently our Commander promised him IT at some point.

I got fucked!

Already am. I'll take a pay cut for all I care to prove a point, because this is the third time they've fucked me out money in some way, shape or form. First time was promising me a transfer to a different department only to pull it back when the departing employee came back, next one was waiting too late to change my designation which meant I got no Thanksgiving or Christmas bonus, and now this.

I'll go work at McDonald's at this point.

If a company goes on and on about how great you are at your job and how beneficial you've beneficial to the company, but can't seem to find the money to give you a raise, then that shows you how they really feel.

I'm on your side, I do also think this is super shity and I also think you should quit. I'm also a low level cog in the corporate ladder in the climbing game. But if I may ask, do you think this is probably why they passed you up? They knew you had this kind of reaction in you or your loyalty wasn't very strong after all?

I'd agree if I wasn't the type of person who busted my ass, worked extra and sometimes unpaid hours, covered for others mistakes and literally did more in sales than all but one person in my department.

Everyone in my department, including my direct supervisor, vouched for me to get this position. Even people in other departments said I should get it.

I know exactly why I didn't get it, though. Because they had hoped they could get the same work as I'm currently doing which was basically above and beyond my current position, and they probably thought that since I've only been there 9 months they could just string me along with promises that with more experience I'll get it down the road.

Except they did the exact same thing with my coworker who now said "fuck it" and went back to school.

Yeah, it's not about loyalty, it's about "why pay them more for work they are already doing."

My brother was in a similar situation where he was essentially trained to be a supervisor at a large grocery store, minus the title and pay. While he never grumbled about his situation, it did cause him to look elsewhere as he was planning for his future. Lucky for him, when he went to give his notice they matched his proposed new salary and promoted him, but it goes without saying, they only did it because they had to and would have been happy paying him his previous salary.
