I know how they feel -- picking locks feels satisfying in this game. It sucks that you can have 'very hard' chests that you can't even attempt to open, though. I think my lockpicking stat is 14-15 and I occasionally run into those...although, after opening one at the miller's, that might be their "merchant chest" of sorts, so it makes sense players can't fumble their way in.

What else am I missing for a hardcore playthrough?

+ don't learn to read
+ don't have sex
+ don't kill anyone

Might as well square away a few other stray trophies, too:

+ get jailed in Skalitz
+ as Theresa, skip all your chores
+ become Talmberg's huntsman (not sure if this conflicts with anything)
+ betray Matthew & Fritz (never got to do this one, so I dunno if I'll bother doing the chain of lead-up quests)
+ leave Jakey in the woods
+ whatever other trophy I missed in Band of Bastards (kill Kuno for not attacking the enemy?)
+ missing trophies from the Hans Capon DLC

Yeah, I got the achievement for tattling on everyone to the inquisitor. I also got the one for sinning in every way possible, although I had to go and commit a few that I'd missed (bedding bath wenches, a stay in jail). As for the Matthew & Fritz quests, I'm aware I'd have to do all that crap over, which isn't making me super interested in doing it on that file. Might just hold off until I reach that part of the FAQ.

Speaking of Matthew and Fritz, have you ever used the Cuman disguise to commit misdeeds? And does it actually work in foiling identification? I'm curious if the sidequest actually has any long-term use, like the Gray Fox's mask in Oblivion.

It's weird that the whole quest -- finding Cumans, feathers, wolf fangs, etc. -- might be entirely pointless. There should be something worthwhile to doing all that. Maybe I'll search Reddit later and see if anyone had similar ideas.

Anyone know what that black blotch means on certain equipment icons? You usually see it on enemy equipment. I thought it meant it was dyed darker for stealth or something, but maybe not.

Ahh, I didn't even note the game denoted that for equipment. Good to know...even if I'm just learning it after 100+ hours.

Nice, found a St. George's Sword (?) at a woodland garden. Outclasses basically everything I've had so far, including the Queen of Sheba Sword, which somehow got marked as stolen.

Yeah, it was only on a hard lock, so you could probably use it immediately, or at least earlier than if it was under a master lock. I'm not sure if you need to train your lockpicking to do hard locks, but it's a good spot to remember.

Oh yeah, I should remember that for the future. I rarely use any potions now that I have most skills maxed + regenerate health. I've always wanted to experiment with a silent, assassin-ish Henry who dumps potions into enemy cooking pots and see what happens. There are some potions that inflict paralysis and craziness, so I'm curious to see it in action. (Although, I guess I could poison my swords to do that, but that's not as fun.)

The thing about potions is that I can already stealth kill enemies, even in full plate armor, so buffing seems less useful as you proceed. I guess early on, if you don't have good stealth stats, you can just strip naked or something to reduce your noise levels, but reequipping gets annoying after awhile. If the game had a separate loadout (one for battle, one for being a man about town) you can quick-switch to, that would be awesome. Maybe there's already a mod for that.

Yeah, I keep most of my stuff (like spades) on my horse for easy access. It gets crowded when you're doing loot runs (pre-Pribyslavitz $$$), but after awhile, it's just filled with arrows, dried goods, etc. I think some enemies/merchants have good dark clothing to use, but I dunno if you can get the full set of goodies that way. They definitely have black hoods, though.

I tend to just keep my lockpicks and bandages with me, but deposit all the unneeded extras in the shared chest. Maybe it'll be different on Hardcore mode. For awhile, I did keep a set of charisma-boosting clothes (mostly crap I took off dead bodies, like that expensive nobleman's hat, decorated hose/doublets, etc.) but I never wore 'em, and they got stashed later on. When you're doing loot runs, having things you want to keep instead of sell just makes for inventory clutter.

Been just randomly going around and killing bandits, checking their gear for zero-noise stuff. Some of these -- like the Aketon Dark and Black Hoods -- qualify. I don't think bandits have noiseproof footwear...although maybe the archer types do. The merchants you see getting slaughtered in battlesites might, though, and they should have dark-colored hose on occasion, too.

On a random note: ever been accosted by gamekeepers out in the woods? Sometimes you can find them at little camps or huts nestled in hills and coulees. I've seen a few before and they always say I'm poaching, even when I don't have any game on me. Not sure if they're reacting to other stolen items in the inventory or what, but it's a little odd. I beat the crap out of the latest one, but in the past, I've murdered them to steal their cool hoods, lol.

I should go check some of the shopkeeper inventories, if not just to see if they randomize over time. Probably haven't bought anything from townies since I gave Theresa a bunch of dresses in the courtship phase.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Damn, now I regret not doing that questline even more.

I read that the Talmberg huntsman quest is related to some cave NE of Talmberg. I saw it was marked on the map (thanks to the reading perk), so I wonder if there are any bandits in there normally. Maybe I can start the quest somehow by going there...although that chance seems slim.

Well, I went over to that cave and didn't find anything. There were some bandits nearby, but I dunno if they were part of the huntsman quest. They did all have arrows, some perfect-quality equipment, and couldn't be stealth killed (only KO'd -> killed), so maybe they were part of it.

Also, found this in the Uzhitz woods. Not sure what it is, but it's the only time I've seen something like this. Maybe it's part of the crazy devil summoner stuff.

The beginning is a little boring, sure. It especially doesn't help that Henry sucks and can't even leave Skalitz to do fun exploration. There'll be time for that ahead, at least.

Picking herbs for the strength increases is what I did early on, but that was mostly a nice bonus to making money. Now that I'd just loot battlesites, I shudder to think at how low my strength would be for the next playthrough (granted, it'll be a no-kill one, but still).

I wish axes got a little more attention in the game. Think about how many different sword types there are...then think about the small number of axes, most of which are hot garbage. Seems like a missed opportunity. In fact, I don't think there are any unique/hard-to-find axes in the entire game! Maybe a sequel will let you dual wield hatchets like a true medieval warrior.

I feel like there should be an Executioner's Axe in this game. When you think about it, that's probably a more medieval weapon than a perfectly crafted 2H longsword.

Just roaming with Mutt in seek mode is kinda fun. Been finding tons of random stuff, including graves filled with loot. I've no doubt they're part of some treasure hunt, but I haven't been bothering with those yet. Gonna need to make a map of that, though.

Pic dump time! Mutt didn't find this, but it looked so weird -- a mossy hill with a shamanistic totem atop it -- I didn't need his help. Not sure if this is part of a treasure quest, but it was a gigantic hole with a bunch of human bones in it, plus a loot bag.

Next, a mercenary's camp by a stream, north of Rovna. Months ago, when I first started playing and Henry didn't know his ass from a doorknob, I thought the merc here was a Cuman, so I ran away. Finally went back and did his battle challenge, thinking it'd be the same as the others. However, I did a masterstroke and he ended up dying, lol. I wonder if he'll respawn in the future. I threw his body in the nearby stream for good measure, a guilty pleasure I developed after MGS3. Sorry not sorry.

This is just an exposed castle foundation in the woods around Pribyslavitz. I looked around, including in the walls, but there wasn't any treasure here...just a ladder. I wonder if it's part of some quest I missed or was cut. It reminds me of one of the ancient treasure map locations (where you find Warhorse stuff) out past Rattay, so I was hopeful...but after searching again, it was a whole lotta nothin'.

Last month, I think, I mentioned finding a body I couldn't inspect and assumed it was part of some quest. Well, I found that same body there (been there for 100+ days, haha) and looked around a bit. Mutt actually started barking, so I searched in earnest and found money stashed in the dead tree trunk. Guess my dog has a head for finances.

I'll have to look if I even have all the treasure maps. I buy 'em whenever they show up, and sometimes you find roadside peddlers pawning them, so I get those, too. (Of course, I steal back the money I paid because that's how Henry rolls.) Sometimes you can get duplicates, and sometimes you can find maps just sitting around in plain sight. There was one in the abbot's chambers at the monastery, one in a mill loft (area they kept a captive Cuman), one atop the windmill (mill that gets razed in DLC, I think), etc.

Interesting to know those treasures are all in the base game, though. I thought the ancient map stuff was DLC.

Saw something I've never seen before: a foe encounter when fast travelling, that only ended up being a wayfarer with a low opinion of me. This was west of the Inn in the Glade, so someone there might've hated me at some point. (Remember when I got caught pickpocketing and chased a guy five miles before murdering him? Good times.)

Damn, I killed another "friendly" mercenary with a masterstroke. Like, instantly. These might be too OP for play fighting. Interestingly, if you pay 50 groschen to do the wager, and the merc dies, that money mysteriously disappears from his corpse.
