Wow, got jumped by three highwaymen leaving the Skalitz area en route to Talmberg and ended up dying. Unlike the fast travel "obstacle" that was basically the same thing, I couldn't run away because I was hauling approximately 90 tons of poppies. Took one of 'em out, but I already had an old wound reopening (?) and ended up almost bleeding out. Not looking forward to doing all that crap over again.

The game doesn't even save if you do a basic "wait X hours" file. I swear, as fun as the game is, behind everything is some ass-backwards, trend-bucking twist that ends up being completely unsatisfying. I know the studio is young, but damn, yo.

Once I get to Talmberg, maybe I'll "find" a mace and level that stuff up. Definitely remember "finding" one that someone had "dropped" somewhere...perhaps at the armory.

Lockpicking is so crappy, it's actually driving me into the arms of Pickpocketing -- that almost never happens. But, why pick anything when you can simply steal the key in the first place? That's some big-brain chutzpah right there. Luckily, this is easy to train and even gives bonus Stealth EXP, which everyone would want anyway. Currently just looting people in Talmberg, but saving the most important ones for later, when I can get a lot of stuff.

My walk over to town (which took all day) actually netted me thousands of herbs, and miraculously, I wasn't murdered this time. I did find a Cuman deserter in some old hinterlands shed, but he didn't see me. Might go back and give him what for, since all my equipment is trash-quality right now. Anytime I talk to someone, they gasp and think I've just gotten out of an attack. =(

The bad news is, after walking to Talmberg, the only merchant who buys flowers has only 50 gold.
I knew leaving Rattay's bustle was a bad idea.

Archery is just plain shit period. Everything about it is terrible and it has nothing to do with your skill levels. It's disliked by the majority of people for a reason. Even at 20 it's worthless

Yeah you gotta wash up before you talk if you don't want hit in speech. If you want money take your mutt and go poaching. You might get lucky and come across a deer which will give you food and cash. Unfortunately you might have to rely on a bow for that >_>

Do I have to complete both scenarios in A Woman's Lot to get the dog? I thought it would've been given to me automatically after Theresa's portion, but naw. Having a pooch by my side would help for those times I get ambushed by three sword-wielding freaks. If a dog's a no-go, I'd settle for a horse. Maybe I should've asked the stablemaster about it back in Talmberg.

As it is, I'm a stone's throw from Rattay now.

You should've gotten him after completing it. Just talk to the dog and he should automatically be yours. He definitely makes combat easier in beginning since he can hold one asshole while dealing with the others

Also easy skill to level since you just praise and feed meat over and over

Is the dog the one in the miller's yard? I could've sworn he had no dialogue options or anything. He's not showing up in my sidekicks tab, either. I'll check en route to the city.

I'll wait on the horse, then.

Turns out, to get the dog, you have to do some type of dialogue with Theresa after she recounts her DLC tale. Maybe this is quicker if you don't have the DLC (I imagine so). Oddly, she said the dog doesn't like her, even though in her side story, she was Houndmaster Lv13+!

Lol this game. Should've realized Theresa had a dialogue choice tied into it but I exhausted them all to level speech. I was disappointed when I found out he couldn't sic automatically (I never even bothered looking at Theresa's skills). Better get poaching for some meat to level it up quick

I still have 500 pounds of flowers to unload, and most vendors don't carry enough, so I just bought some meat until I can take my boy hunting. I'm thiiiiiis close to storing all the flowers in my shared storage bin -- I think they always remain fresh.

If you haven't done the miller quest already do it and he'll be unlocked as a shop keeper. He always as like 2k in cash or somewhere close to that anyway. Convenient to unload on him. Also shops get more gold the more you sell to them so focus on specific ones if you want somewhere to sell

Yeah, I managed to find out the millers' deep pockets on my own, when I swung by the 2nd miller (out in the boondocks) and turned in his five waffenrocks he wanted. Eventually sold all my swag and have 1.5K to spend. Honestly, I kinda want to blow it on that green nobleman's pimp hat, but I'll hold off for now.

Didn't know shops get more gold the more you use 'em. Gonna try to invest in that trade down the street from Peshek's, then.

EDIT: Also, I randomly got a "crime" notification while in town at night. Turns out you need to have a torch on at all times. Oh well, I'll keep up appearances to suit the guards' wussy little nerves.

Finally went hunting with my pupper -- pretty good experience. He was running around, murdering local wildlife, then getting free num-nums for the trouble. Rabbits were dropping 10+ pieces of meat, lmao...must've been one of the more exceptional specimens of rabbitkind. Of course, I went too far west, got jumped in the dark by five bandits, couldn't tell my ass from a hole in the ground, got killed, and wasted all that precious time with my canine friend.

When I first played Dying Light, I thought emerging at night was an annoying, often harrowing experience, but that feels like a Strawberry Shortcake tea party compared to this. The torch only lights up five feet (and probably makes you a target), you get staggered by melee attacks, there are dudes trying to catch you in enfilade... Henry's actually getting to be a decent attacker, but he's constantly getting ganked. If it was high noon on an open road, instead of midnight in some creepy forest thicket, I'd probably win, even in a 4-on-1 situation. I know that seems a little arrogant, but even when I'm dying, I'm taking out a couple people. Without the environment slapping my MC all the time, the power in numbers might not hold up.

Oh yeah, I wanted that retiree to teach me how to read. I keep putting it off since I haven't discovered Ushnitz (spelled that poorly, I'm sure) yet. It's near one of the millers, IIRC.

As for pickpocketing, I've been doing that at night on sleeping people. I've gotten pretty good at it, although occasionally a guard won't be having any of that malarkey and I get caught almost immediately. The best part is that when you take keys and unlock chests with 'em, you get lockpicking EXP. Definitely makes it doubly worth it.

As far as my progress, I went back hunting with Mutt in roughly the same area as before, just further west. No Cuman incidents, thankfully. Found some deserted, burned-out hill fort village and looked around (sacrificial altar???), but there wasn't anything of much interest there. Stumbled onto Sasau right after that and met up with a couple friends in need of work. Didn't talk to Johanka yet, though, 'cause I don't want to do any DLC segments at the moment.

I want to find Simon (Sasau miller) and do some more sketchy missions. I robbed my own liege lord in Peshek's last mission, lol. It was surprisingly easy, though, and didn't even require lockpicking, just cajones.

The game has several annoying aspects, but once you know how to manage 'em, it's a lot easier to take.

Did the quest where you find a priest for Rovna, the burned-down village. Turns out he was being kept prisoner by two tramps way out in the woods. Put 'em to the sword, lol...the priest didn't like that very much. Even with a sword and shield against unarmed dudes, they were still getting in punches and staggering me, which was kinda lame. Fighting in forests, with foliage flapping all over your HUD, isn't very nice, though -- gotta find a bottleneck to defend next time.

I wonder how useful drunkenness is. I get a lot of booze dropped from bandits and the like, and the perk where you automatically return home after drinking (with no inventory loss) seemed pretty awesome for wayfaring. Some of the other perks seem like trash, though, so maybe this isn't a great thing to focus on. I only started paying attention because my dude's hiking out by Skalitz and is semi-injured, so I drank a bunch of moonshine for nourishment. Later, I woke up in some random deserted house in the middle of Bumblef***, way west of the area.

Yeah, I'm not planning on being the #1 Polish drunk anytime soon.

I've been walking around the map lately, trying to fill it in. I walked all the way from Skalitz (always wanna call it Slavitz), discovered the bandit-overrun city of Prabislyvitz, then went east and discovered Uchitz...and then I slept in an inn and quit...only to learn I slept in a bed that didn't save, so I wasted all that time! Eventually redid it, but that was kinda annoying. They shouldn't put those crappy, worthless beds right by the one you need to use for saving.

Also, I started Johanka's quest to help some of the patients (originally why I went to find that priest), and I've been away so long, the "help fix the guy's leg" portion failed. I think he died while I was picking flowers and stuff, lol. Oh well, a guard killed two Cumans, so I got to steal their gear...good trade-off.

I stole a bunch of books from the monastery custodian, plus stole all his fancy clothes, plus stole all his scribe's clothes, plus stole all his cheese...so I'm sittin' pretty right now. Haven't spent a lot of time reading, but I guess that'll help boost your main level, too, so maybe I should do that.

Martin something. I don't remember hearing anything about him in Sasau, so maybe it's for something else. Anyway, waited until nightfall so I could train my stealth up to Stealth Kill level...and my dude couldn't kill them while they were napping. And the dog wouldn't sic 'em while they were napping either. Felt like a complete waste of time, so I just clobbered 'em and dumped their bodies into the river.

Anyway, managed to get a crapload of good loot. I went back to a certain roadside south of Skalitz and found a large Cuman/Bandit fight. Only a single guard survived (maybe because he has a 119-power spear) and we looted the bodies for a lot of heavy mail, way better than some of the garbage I've been wearing. It was only yesterday that I replaced the "quality gear" I stole in the Talmberg story mission, lol. Gonna come back in a day or two and see if there's any other goodies, because some bodies dropped boot spurs worth over 1.2K groschen. That's just insane.

Game: do you want to perform a mercy kill?
Me: yes
Henry: *stomps on guy's head*

Been killing a few bandits here and there and been doing alright. My swordsmanship, warfare and defense are all pretty low, though. Might try to check out some books to help me on that end. I found an old lady in the woods who had a crapload of books, but they were all expensive alchemy recipes, so that wasn't the same thing. Good to know you can make Saviour Shnapps, though.

Maybe I have to aim at their head or something to properly get a stealth kill. Now that my dude's walking around with 200 pounds of clinking metal armor, this option might be a no-go from now on. I'm curious if I can just slip into camp while nearly naked, kill everyone, then put all my stuff back on, haha. It's easier than getting those perks to reduce armor noise.

As for Martin and his dead, maggot-infested body: I didn't see any unique stuff on him. He had trader stuff that I ended up dumping on the roadside, so hopefully nothing's too screwed up. The bandits were just run-of-the-mill clowns, so maybe I got a head start on some quest that hasn't been given out yet. I've noticed a few only show up on repeat appearances in town (usually after finishing some other one).

In other news, I never did meet with Sir Radzig to advance that old main quest, so maybe I should do that. Been wanting to find a dude who'll train me in swordsmanship ever since the loading screen mentioned some guy (Bernard?) who'll do that for me multiple times.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I bought one really inexpensive one because I had a lot of herbs to exchange, but yeah, I'll probably steal the others. Some old lady in the middle of nowhere doesn't need all that horded knowledge.

Perfect block and dodge are definitely life savers at times. Combos were less so but then I was on hardcore where perfect block is much more common from enemies
