https://people.com/movies/elizabeth-banks-faces-backlash-for-saying-wonder-woman-and-captain-marvel-belong-to-male-genre/

Elizabeth Banks has stirred up some controversy over recent comments about moviegoer preferences.

The actress, who also serves as writer, director and producer on the just-released Charlies Angels reboot, gave some quotes to the Herald Sun recently that have sparked backlash on social media.

Speaking of her movie before it opened, Banks said that Charlies Angels had to perform well at the box office, otherwise it would further harm future female-led films. Since the interviews publication, the movie went on to make a disappointing $8.6 million on opening weekend in North America.

Look, people have to buy tickets to this movie, too. This movie has to make money, Banks, 45, said. If this movie doesnt make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men dont go see women do action movies.

But while some would point to the success of recent female-led action movies like Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, Banks said those dont necessarily count since theyre part of bigger cinematic universes that are led by male actors.

Theyll go and see a comic book movie with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel because thats a male genre, Banks said. So even though those are movies about women, they put them in the context of feeding the larger comic book world, so its all about, yes, youre watching a Wonder Woman movie but were setting up three other characters or were setting up Justice League.

By the way, Im happy for those characters to have box office success, Banks added, but we need more womens voices supported with money because thats the power. The power is in the money.

Banks comments were not received well by some on social media, with people on Twitter saying that her movie just didnt look good.

Elizabeth Banks does know that women didnt want to see her Charlies Angels movie either, right? I get it, Hollywood and the world really, is frustrating and sexist as heck but she should just face facts. As tough as it is, her movie just didnt look appealing to people, a Twitter user wrote.

Elizabeth Banks is so talented but she is saying such idiotic things. Charlies Angels will flop not because men dont want to see it but because the marketing is so f- atrocious NOBODY wants to see it, another echoed.

Still, others jumped to Banks defense and backed up her comments, agreeing that the superhero genre gave Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman a leg up that Charlies Angels didnt have.

[Clowns] twisting Liz Banks words by mentioning WonderWoman&CaptainMarvel as successful female lead action films are dumb, both of these films from either DC or Marvel which are destined to make BILLIONS bc of the same fanboys who claimed CharliesAngels is bad without even seeing it, one user wrote.

Elizabeth banks didnt lie when she classified these films as male genre because none of these had a fully female driven cast, whereas Charlies Angels had that and was more about female friendships and women at work without necessarily having any superpowers, the user added in a follow-up tweet.

The actress later addressed Charlies Angels lack of performance at the box office with a self-deprecating joke on Twitter.

Well, if youre going to have a flop, make sure your name is on it at least 4x. Im proud of #CharliesAngels and happy its in the world, she tweeted, referencing her roles as actress, writer, producer and director.

Maybe the movie sucked and was marketed horribly, might be a reason why it bombed. Kinda simple

Bridesmaids, while not an action movie, did pretty well too.
Etc.

Just make good and interesting movies. People, men included, will come. Looks like a lot of women don't apparently don't go see women do action movies either.

Ill admit I didnt see the 2000s Charlie Angels because they were badass ladies doing cool action things, it was because Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore were fucking hot. Does the new version have a scene with Kristen Stewart doing this?

Her point is semi-valid, having an established franchise goes a long way to make a successful movie, but blaming men is laughable. Woman didn't go see it either, why not blame them?

The last two films did well because they had 3 A-List (at the time) actresses. Hell, the first movie had Bill fucking Murray.

Maybe don't try to sell your film off of 2 nobodies, and an a-list actress who is divisive as hell.

It's a weird pick. Who does it appeal to exactly? At least when they rebooted it in the early 00's, 70's nostalgia was still a thing because people who were young in the 70's were in their 20s/30s. They should have just done their own thing instead of relying on the name of something that's super old news now.

It would help if people read the quote. Her point when saying that was literally exactly the opposite way people are taking it.

She said if it does badly it reinforces the stereotype that men dont see female action movies. She called it a stereotype.

Since when does calling something a stereotype mean you are saying it is definitely true?

It's just easier and more comfortable for Banks to blame men for her movie's failure, rather than having to face the reality that it wasn't really any good. Either way, she sounds entitled. Her implication is that men are somehow obligated to spend money to watch her movie.

how much did they spend on advertising and on what forms? not looking at the numbers I would be more inclined to say the studio decided not to spend a bunch on P&A because they knew it would fail and wanted to minimize losses (that is, the film's lack of success is the reason for the slim advertising budget rather than the other way around) but idk

YES!!! I'm a big dude, but I think I saw Bridesmaids in theaters and laughed my ass off. Love that movie.

But I also loved Wonder Woman too and other female led roles.

Nobody in 2019 asked for a Charlie's Angels reboot. Considering the source material was literally sexist dribble, and then they rebooted the series back in 2000 and it did well. Who was asking for Charlie's Angels in 2019??

Damn shame she's beautiful and pretty funny but also a fucking idiot for saying such a narrow minded sexist opinion.
Why can't these actresses get their heads out of their asses and understand that commercializing feminism the same way Disney shits out soulless Marvel and Star Wars movies is not the way to break ground on the matter.

It's also incredibly moronic to believe it's all a gender issue when Hollywood as a whole is so creatively bankrupt as it is regurgitating the same shit over and over.

Not thin at all, you're still ignoring the huge difference in establishment. A bad dc movie is still gonna do well, since people who like the franchise will see it regardless. This isn't the case for charlies angels, there just aren't enough fans of the franchise to make up for it.
