SSDs do many things, keeping costs down is not one of them.

I believe they're not for individual games but as a means of expanding storage. Like memory cards on the older consoles, but for storage and not just save files

As long as they're priced right I think they're a great idea.

Leaving consumers to buy them in order to expand the system's storage, however, offers them an option for keeping the price of the system itself down. Because, you know, that worked so well with the Vita.

Vita had entirely different issues, though.

Having proprietary support probably hurts more in and of itself than the form that support takes. People have complained forever whenever Sony requires memory sticks or UMDs or whatever else they come up with that isn't compatible with anything else.

If memory cards I'll be fine with that too if they can hold game installs. In fact id welcome it if that where the case.

I don't think it's going to matter what the ps5 uses unless it can get some good exclusives.

I got the ps4 primarily for KH3...which ended up being blah...and took forever to get released.

I can't honestly point to any one ps4 exclusive game and say......it was worth getting the system for that....but all together it was ....eventually worth it.

For the PS5 it might never be worth it, or it will probably take at least a few years I'd say.

Yeah I have a at least 3 "must have" games rule for buying a console. Made an exception for thr psp because dissidia was a game i had dreamed about for a long time and crisis core looked damn good too.

PSP had a good number of great games, even though they weren't all gorgeous big-budget games.

Loco Roco and Patapon are still some of my favorite low-budget games

A lot of the games I've played and really enjoyed this generation were PS4 exclusives.

Just off the top of my head, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-Man, the Uncharted games. And while I didn't really like Last of Us or Bloodborne, I hear they were pretty popular with some people. I'd also argue that Until Dawn was cool, though it tends to work better as a rental or watching YouTubers play than it does as something worth owning and replaying (though at this point you could probably get it on sale for a low enough price to make it worth it).

Conversely, I honestly can't think of a single Nintendo or Microsoft exclusive this generation I gave a single shit about. The closest I might come is with Halo (which I loved in the past), but that franchise has taken such a total shit since 343 took it over that I couldn't care less now.

It's not even brand loyalty for me - I basically went from thinking the 360 was the best console of last generation to thinking the PS4 was best this gen. Next gen might change again (though nearly every single thing I've heard mentioned about the next-gen Microsoft console makes me think I'm going to loathe it). But I've always gone with whichever console had the games I wanted to play in any given generation... I basically went Coleco/Atari to NES/SNES to PS1/PS2 to 360 to PS4.

Oddly most games I own on psp are ports. Something about having a game made for a home console being on a handheld lures me.

Not for the customer as Sony will put minimal storage space in the PS5 and charge the customer through the arse for upgrades. Take a look at the Vita.

Burnout Legends? I honestly can't remember if that was an original game or if it used tracks from previous games. But I remember being really impressed with the gameplay and visuals, despite the long loading times

Looking back, it kind of surprises me how good its library turned out. So many gems + emulation

Bought a switch only for splatoon 2 but I didnt enjoy it as much as the first one. Basically collected dust until DxM came out which also didnt turn out how i expected. Oh well

Wasnt really that impressed with this gen overall, but I think that is just the general direction gaming is going. Thankfully there are plenty of great games from last gen and before that I still havent touched.

Yeah, I think I still own Horizon unless I gave it away to someone (I may have to a past roomate). I rented it and really enjoyed the 10 hours I put into it or so, and always planned on playing it more, but never got around to it. Of the rest , I own Spider man as well, but never got to play it, and didn't bother with the newer uncharted games. I did like Bloodborne though and that was probably worth getting the system for by itself (and also I needed ONE system to play all the non-exclusives that were really good).

There hasn't been anything on Xbox that made me want that system at all.

Nintendo at least had the mario game, but I finished it in a weekend, and ended up returning the system (and selling the game). Still has not released another game I really want to play yet.

Think i'm gonna be all PC after this generation of console games, unless they do something amazing.

ssd loads the game faster but all it's doing is loading the game into ram which is capped at 8gb, probably 16gb for the ps5

if you want you could buy a external ssd right now and hook it up to your ps4 to get the same effect

That is the thing for me, as much as people complain about Nintendo having small drives/memory, at least I can go into any store and pick up an SD card or a external hard drive and expand it without needing to buy up-charged proprietary storage.

Now that's worth a discussion. That's been the standard a while, especially since the fifth generation and the playstation.
Would people accept it? What would make you buy more?
With how games are released broken but with patches, I'd want that done with. I don't see that going away though. There's just so much rushing these days.

Gen 6 was the last bastion of the $50 game. They were experimenting with making $60 games via collector's versions (I think I paid $60 for my THAW Collector's Edition) and then it became standard in Gen 7.

Nintendo can be pretty strict about locking out third-party or general support for tech and selling you first-party solutions for problems you shouldn't be having in the first place as well. It usually depends on what part of their arrogance cycle they're in as to how many blocks they put in to keep anything but proprietary tech from working.

Ironically, Microsoft is probably the one most open to general compatibility, mostly because they're already spreading their reach across both the Xbox and PCs (which is why Xbox architecture tends to be closest to PC in general), so it's easier to be compatible with most general PC tech.

Maybe they'll have a vmu! Memory cards are great and avoid depending on the cloud to travel with your saves. I mean, any card will do but maybe with the switch, the ps5 will have something like it but as an accessory.

Just seems a way of changing out internet storage. Much like you can do with a HDD on your PS3/PS4 right now only now we have cards and Sony wants complete control.
