I hate to say it, but when it comes to being overly cautious or working overly hard to make up for past treatment of women, the 007 series has more to make up for than any mainstream series. Bond slapping a woman on the ass and dismissing her with the line, "Man talk." Bond asking why Chinese women taste different from other women. Tiger Tanaka telling Bond that, in Japan, men always come first. Oh, and then there is that time he forced himself on a lesbian and turned her heterosexual. I think Brosnan was the very best example of what a James Bond ought to be but Timothy Dalton's Bond kind of played up the harder edge of the character and Craig's is like the descendant of that. He's supposed to be more spy than assassin, but it's true he is both. Timothy Dalton is my favorite. He was able to do the harder edged Bond with him still being James Bond. Even License To Kill, which was Bond going on his own in a typical 80's action movie way, still felt like a James Bond movie featuring The character of James Bond.
