Well... I am a schizophrenic and still hear near constant background murmering, but thanks to medication and therapy it's no longer deafening and I only very rarely suffer any kind of visual hallucinations.

For a bipolar dude who has been without medication for like 4 years now its fucking great.

Self medication might not be recommended but even my shrink took me off meds and says i dont need to see him regularly (literally was on once a year appointments for years and now hes technically not even my doctor).
