Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke ended his presidential campaign on Friday after struggling to translate the energy from his 2018 Senate bid into a successful White House campaign.

"Our campaign has been about seeing clearly, speaking honestly and acting decisively in the best interests of America," O'Rourke wrote in a statement on Medium. "Though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully. My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee. Acknowledging this now is in the best interests of those in the campaign; it is in the best interests of this party as we seek to unify around a nominee; and it is in the best interests of the country."

It's not terribly surprising, given his low polling numbers and terrible debate performances. Granted, some time ago, the media seemed to be setting him up as a contender before jumping ship to Mayor Pete.

And, at this point, there are *still* too many people in this race.

He's too young, too untested.

I don't think he really ever answered the base question "Why do you want to be president?"

Now he shot himself in the foot and can't even run for senate after saying all the gun stuff he thought would help him in national polling/primaries.

Unless he can get a federal appointment and do a good showing with it I kind of think his political career might stall here.

Either her or Booker, but the news was reporting earlier about how messed up her campaign was so she's a safe bet.

Funny considering I actually thought she was going to be the nominee this time last year.

Not surprising. The guy went a little extreme towards the end of his campaign in an attempt to garner more support.

Last I heard he was polling 4th in Iowa. For a democrat that is not a good sign.

I didn't think she'd win but I thought she'd have a much stronger showing.

Beto and Kamala Harris were the two I most disliked by far, so...good!
Dude was a loser ("nominate me, I can win Texas!" -- a year after losing Texas to human douche bag Ted Cruz) and his pitiful flails for relevance were starting to hurt the Democratic party brand in general w/ shit like insisting he'll forcibly confiscate guns from people that Republicans will surely try to stain everyone in the party with ("look, one of them admitted what they REALLY want to do!")

Good fucking riddance

He likes wasting money.

So is he actually going around doing speeches and rallies and shit, thinking his 0.2% ass has any chance? I haven't heard anything about him since the second debates.

I think a lot of people thought she was still in the running until she got Tulsi Gabbard'd.

Tulsi Gabbard never had any actual chance because boomers don't know who she is + the constant media smearing.
And someone like Buttigieg will never go anywhere because the instant boomers or conservatives hear that he's gay they turn off.

Tulsi destroying her is my favorite moment of this election so far. It was beautiful and brutal. The smearing of Tulsi needs to stop as well.

Not much incentive to quit while he's still winning or, depending on some polls, next to the top. Even in the state polls, the lowest you'll find him is third. Meanwhile there are... what, still over 10 candidates?

CaptainStrong posted...

Not really a "how," considering that up until the primaries are over he can still be in the race. It's the "why" that's more debatable. He has no chance of winning, but he might be trying to elevate his brand.

His remark wasn't about Gabbard's chances, but instead that Gabbard tanked Harris's chances. And, honestly, Kamala Harris was a weak candidate which is why it was so easy to chop at her legs the same way she tried to score points on Biden.

And while Gabbard had a good debate performance, it's really too little, too late. She wasn't far enough in contention for performances to matter, unless everybody else really bombed.

Harris is pretty fucking terrible, tbh. Beto is just an idiot.

Being an idiot can be pretty bad, just as a competent person being intentionally malicious can be.
For example...GWB. I mean, it can be debated whether he was a foolish idiot or just obsfucating stupidity and actually intentionally malicious. But the fact that either is plausible just proves my point that "oh, he's just an idiot, he's no harm" is fictitious.

In Beto's case, he was writing Republican attack ads for them. Good riddance.

That wasn't where I was going with this. Otherwise I wouldn't put GWB as any stupider than Obama, Clinton, Trump, Reagan, or Bush Sr. Most of that perception has been the result of a deliberate misinformation campaign.
