So about a 7 then? Seems about right from what I can tell. Some of the higher scores contradict themselves by saying the games quests are repetitive and boring yet they give it a 9/10? Seems fishy to me.

That's the thing. It's always best to make up your own mind. I'll buy when cheaper myself but I'm not against folk who want it day one as it doesn't effect me. I also don't care for some random persons review on a game.

I don't regret buying it, but after playing a few hours I can see why it's so divisive.

The story and characters are intriguing, and I'm very interested in seeing the story through to the end, but the gameplay is very tedious, at least in the early portion. You're basically a funky UPS delivery man, but you have to dodge ghosts. That's... pretty much it. The terrain is gorgeous and invites exploration, and in certain chapters rewards exploration, but it gets repetitive. I haven't found a way to engage in combat, but my brother who is further along than me says there is some combat, and that it's not very satisfying.

Also - and I guess this should be expected with a Kojima game - but holy shit... cutscenes. There's a lot of them.

So I'd say if you're the kind of person who enjoys an original story, likes exploring, and enjoys stealth-styled games, you may enjoy DS, but I wouldn't recommend anyone rush out and buy it unless you're a hardcore Kojima fan.

The impression I get is that your opinion of the game is going to depend on whether or not you're looking for a fun game with an interesting story, or are more willing to accept Kojima's usual weirdness for the "experience", and if you're willing to cut him slack over being experimental with mechanics that may not necessarily be all that fun (or necessary).

Personally I never liked the Metal Gear Solid games, and this looks like more of the same, only moreso. So I assume I'd hate it, while the sort of people who were obsessed with Metal Gear Solid (of which there were a lot) will love it.

Def features prominently in a couple scenes and when you drink from your canteen it says something "drink monster energy drink" or something. Feels out of place in a post-apocalyptic setting for sure, but it's a stretch to say it's "everywhere"

I think every Kojima game since 3 has had some kind of sponsor from a real life product. I know there was a food item in 3 that was actually a real life product in Japan, and ended up being the most efficient way to keep your hunger meter up and restore health. Plus I also remember 5 having something as well.

Anyways, I probably won't get this game unless it ends up in a Humble Bundle or something. I was a huge fan of the Metal Gear series, but not necessarily Kojima productions. Still would have liked to see what they did with the Silent Hills though (since I am also a huge fan of that series).

I would suggest playing it yourself. No review is going to nail it 100%. If you think that, then you will eventually buy a game you do not like based on reviews, though it happens a lot.

The problem is, there are way too many games in the world to play them all, so you pretty much need to rely on reviews to some degree to judge which ones are worth spending time on.

If anyone ever attempted to play every game ever without a single review (even if just word-of-mouth from friends or people they trust), they'd hate most of the games they play and waste a shitton of money.

The key is to find reviewers whose opinions seem similar to your own, and go from there. Also, check both positive and negative reviews to see what people are praising and what people are complaining about - it's possible you may considering something a positive that someone else considers a negative, and vice-versa.

It's also worth considering things like genre and intent. The best platformer game in the world might be getting 10/10 out of platformer fans, but if I hate platformers in general their opinions really aren't going to mean much to me, and I likely won't see it as anything more than a 2/10 myself (and vice-versa, my 2/10 score isn't going to mean much to people who actually love platformers).

So basically, what sounds more appealing. Playing a game and end up disliking it or doing research to find out if you'd like a game. Unless you really have a single reviewer where you always play any and all games they say are good.

For me, I'd rather just play the game instead. And if the game looks like something I'm on the fence about, I'm not going to spend more than $20 to play it so I'll wait until the price lowers.

This is much better than relying on reviewers and scores. You yourself should know what kinds of games you like and that's a better basis for what to play.

I don't actually have any clue what kind of game Death Stranding is supposed to be.

Certain studios can make an action game, fighting game, stealth game.

Certain actors play many characters.

Jack Nicholson plays Jack Nicholson characters.

Kojima makes kojima games.
