How many billions have escaped poverty because of the tools and products built by Apple, Microsoft, and other companies? Smart phone apps are an example of a brand new industry that has helped hundreds of millions.

Zero. In fact, make that a negative number. Smart phone apps have enabled the gig economy which has only served to undercut wages and make people poorer. Taxi drivers are committing suicide because they can't compete with the flood of desperate uber and lyft drivers who themselves are barely making money (if any) after maintenance costs and fuel.

You drank the kool-aid too hard. In fact, you've dunked your entire fucking head in it. Stop lapping up the bullshit that the rich spew. They are actively making the world a worse place.

Taxi companies are monopolies. Uber is not all good in itself but the reason they disrupted the taxis is because of how entrenched they were in the first place.

You are really uncharitable and unpleasant to speak with so I'm just going to stop responding. Hard to take seriously the idea that NO people benefited from personal computers, smart phones, apps, the platforms that enabled new services and products, and the like. Just not a data driven idea.

No one makes a billion in straight cash. The billionaires don't have their billions as cash just lying around. Their billions are in shares of their companies and other assets that are not liquid.

Your example is very ignorant to basic wealth building principles and doesn't actually show anything important. In order to have a billion, you need to build and invest into things that go up in value.

I could come up with a similarly ridiculous example like yours using someone who earns $1 a day and how they'll never get to a million dollars, but no one engaging in good faith would accept that this example is good commentary.

So you're going to keep missing the point, got it

Uber disrupted taxis because they didn't follow any of the local laws. You're right though, taxis sucked and they were also extremely exploitative. Huh, seems to be a common theme with capitalism.

I mostly agree with you guys by the way, the billionaires should be taxed significantly higher. Multi millionaires too. No reason why someone who earns millions a year can't pay 2x the tax and still be considerably wealthy.

I just don't buy into the ridiculousness or extremeness of the broader views you guys propose.

No they didn't. They ripped off others like Xerox and produced inferior crash-heavy, memory-hungry trash that demanded people fork over more money. You're woefully inadequate in your knowledge of the computer industry, economics, and life. Educate yourself.

We don't have to replace capitalism, but he need to heavily regulate it. Prevent companies from growing too big to fail and prevent people from getting too powerful with too much money.

Americans are far wealthier than most of the world. Wealth innequality between South America and the USA is unfair and we should tax EVERY American 80% and give it all to starving families who DONT have electricity, roads, water, basic education, transportation, internet, to all of South America. That'll teach Americans to NOT get loans and mortgages that inflate the prices of everything.

Its ridiculous the world doesnt invade America to grab all their wealth and iPhones. I wonder what's holding back the world.

Hell, if I were Kim Kardashian, I would rob kylie jenner.

Kim Kardashian and her net worth is at $300 million

Kylie Jenner and her net worth is at $1000 million aka a billy.

Average American: <1 million,

1<300<1000

Wealth innequality between Kim and Kylie is so rediculous. Kim is closer to us in wealth than she is to kylie. Kim Kardashian is basically broke.

Joking aside,

the real wealth grabbers are not billionaires. Boomers are the greatest wealth grabbing hogs in all American history. They voted themselves all the benefits and made younger generations pay for it. Politicans pander to them because boomers outnumber other groups of voters. They voted for cuts in education and infrastructure to fund healthcare. They voted themselves unreasonable amounts pension benefits that will collapse because millennials are so broke. Boomers are notoriously nimby activists because they own most of the real estate and they benefit by ripping off youngsters on rent. Social secuirty so mismanaged because boomer voters vote off any politican who tries updating it. Social secuirty will collapse long before millennials get to enjoy its benefits and its evil considering how much millennial contribute to social secuirty.

Is it moral to spend money on credit and have your grandkids go bankrupt for it? Because this is exactly what Americans are doing.

People who blame billionaires are blaming the wrong villain.

Bernie (and Trump) are doing a good job misleading everyone. Typical boomer behavior.

Socialism for the boomers and crony capitalism for millennials, gen x, and zoomers.

So, how exactly did they become billionaires?
Some earned.
Many were silver spooned into success via inheritance.

Theres a mighty fine difference being born into wealth and having the luxury to blow loads of cash, make mistakes, and just throw money at your mistakes/problems, to succeed.
To someone who started actually broke, who worked their ass off to not make any mistakes, as any mistake would actually devastate them, and the company as poor people cant just throw money at their problems.

The idea that all rich people worked hard to get rich is a fantasy.

People are benefiting from the tech in some ways, but they're being stripped of their individual wealth and wealth is being consolidated into the tech conglomerates.

When the Fourth Industrial Revolution arrives (powered by Chainlink), smart contracts are going devour so many jobs. Sure, there will be new opportunities to take advantage of this technology to generate wealth, but once again, the overall wealth is going to be consolidated among those who jump in before the train takes off, not the general populace.

This is kind of true. A lot of "wealth" is actually a hypothetical value. Most people own things estimated to be worth X at a given point in time. It doesn't really mean much until they exchange it for actual cash. And that's part of a healthy economy, imo.

People shouldn't just horde assets for the sake of wealth.

Captain of the debate team over here! But no seriously, the study was bunk. They didn't release their figures or methodology, used estimates in lieu of up to date official tax figures and worst of all totally omitted refundable credits to make it look like poor people pay more than they do. The US has a VERY progressive taxation system, that is a fact.

HC cost have certainly kept wages from rising as much as they could be, but the fact remains that it's still the employers paying for that rise. The idea that they're hoarding wealth from workers isn't very accurate.

This certainly will not apply to the coming Fourth Industrial Revolution. People talk about automation and how it'll steal jobs, but they're thinking a lot about robots and AI. No one knows about smart contracts. This is the true job killer. In a scenario where someone getting paid from some company needs to have his invoice verified and moved through several hands, smart contracts will replace all those hands and will be automated and seamless. Something as simple as someone clocking in and out from a job, this has to be verified by the manager before they cut a cheque. With smart contracts deployed, the moment you clock out, you'll be getting paid instantly. No humans involved.

Technology has always increased the productivity of a individual, but we're approaching a time where a lot of rote jobs are being taken back by the computers and the only things you can bring to the table to compete are the creativity and ideas you produce.

I implore you all to start reading up on blockchain technology. I don't care if you refuse to spend a dime on it because of its volatility. But I do care whether or not you have the knowledge to understand what's to come and what makes the bitcoin such a threat to governments and why both big name tech conglomerates and governments are racing to research and build upon the spin off blockchain technologies.

I never go to starbucks, I don't have an iphone (I have a phone that was a little over $100 when I bought it three years ago), and I've never had an amazon prime subscription. Now what?

Wow, you go through great suffering v_v

You can earn above the median wage if you just push yourself and spend time on improving yourself and learning valuable skills.

After that becoming a millionaire is just a matter of time if you save and invest a bit each month.

It isn't rocket science people.

Everyone can earn above median wage!

You're finally understanding something. Yes they can! In fact, most workers will throughout their working career earn more money and far surpass the median wage they were earning prior.

The median wage when you start working is certainly not where you are capped. And most workers will move up the ranks in terms of pay. Unless you stagnate or never bother to make something of yourself.

Remember that every time a capitalist shill blathers on about Starbucks and Amazon Prime, they are deflecting criticism. Stay the course and press them further; remember that this is not about you. The coward will not be able to stand up.

Are you seriously agreeing with the statement "everyone can earn above median wage"? You're too high on the fumes of rich ass.
