I dont think thats the issue. See, the whole issue is that making beef isnt good for the Earth, so vegans want omnivores and carnivores to stop eating meat. But people dont because they like the meat and how it taste. So, they made plant based burgers that are suppose to taste like the meat they are trying to be.

I think people can also easily enjoy a bean burger and such. But if people couldnt eat real meat, they would still want something that taste exactly the same (or at lest similar).

That being said, burgers are only a small part. We would still need many different flavors of meat from chicken to pork. Also, more of the cow. Making a burger is one thing. And it took a while to make it, IIRC. Now, they would need to work on things like steak and such...

Honestly, lab meat will become commercially viable before anyone manages to come up with a veggie burger that will completely satisfy carnivores. That's where the real potential is for reducing animal suffering and the environmental impact of ranching. Beyond Meat and the like are just capitalizing on the fact that plant-heavy diets have become trendy, not actually trying to reduce the amount of meat eaten.

I'm also thinking more broadly than just burgers, looking at things like "vegan brownies" that are just dates mashed up with cocoa in a food processor. That's very obviously not a brownie. It's quite tasty, but trying to pass it off as a brownie instead of calling it something like "cocoa date bar" is just silly. You're not fooling anyone.

I do agree that naming them like that is just to get people to buy them. Especially ones who dont know how the different vegan items are made... That makes a great amount of sense. They can still sort of feel like they dont have to give up some foods they like.

I've tried "meat"balls (plantballs?) once that were so similar to actual meat that it made me feel sick and I literally couldn't eat it.

Speaking of which the vegan meatballs occasionally found at WFM seem indistinguishable from animal based meatballs, but I wouldn't recommend eating them. Plant based meat can be hit or miss with me. I avoid almond milk and vegan ice cream as well. And beet burgers are just pathetic. But the good stuff tends to be REALLY GOOD imo. I've loved tofu dogs, basically anything asian, (mock duck, soy protein, etc) and the soy nuggets at WFM, and various seitan. These are probably not essential foods but I'll be damned if they aren't really enjoyable. Oh, and shiitake bacon / eggplant bacon are to die for. Those get extra points for not really being fake anything, just plant/fungus prepared a certain way.

I've had some really good meat substitutes, especially when it comes to faux sausage. The bacon ones I've had were utter trash, though I've heard that they've gotten better over the years.

The biggest problem with meat substitutes is that if you're making them at home, they can take a LOT of work to prep. That's one of the reasons why they tend to be more expensive to buy; they can get away with charging more because of the convenience of buying something that's more work than average to make at home.

I should really just go back to being a vege/vegan. A lot of my favorite foods fall under that category anyway so it's not like I'd be missing out.

I've been having slight thoughts about going vegetarian. I don't know if I ever will. I've had these before however, and they aren't as good as real meat.

And yes they are more expensive which is the major setback for me.

Content to be omnivorous, I'd be willing to give plant based meat substitutes a try for curiosity's sake, but I'm not against eating meat.
That said, I do think we eat too much meat in general, but I don't think it should be taken off the menu.

I'm not a huge fan of veal. But one of the first thoughts I ever had when I saw the pig from Babe was "Man, that would make a delicious sandwich."

I've also literally raised chickens and geese from almost birth to eventually eat them. Named them, hand-fed them, petted them, etc. So sentiment really isn't going to stop me from eating anything. Nor did it stop most human beings throughout the entirety of human history when people had to raise their own animals on farms rather than allowing machines to do most of the slaughtering and selling meat en masse.

Soylent Green was also... explicitly not about vegetarianism.

If what you got out of Soylent Green was "wow fake food is bad", and not "wow overpopulation is bad", you should really rewatch the scene where they literally use dump trucks to just... pour humans into the truck.

Well, the deeper meaning with Soylent Green is that with over-population, food resources will dwindle to the point real food wouldn't be real anymore, that we have to rely on processed chemicals to stay alive, and they'd probably have to disguise it with clever marketing like "Plant Based Meats".

It's kind of scary that plant-based food is suddenly a fad in the fast food industry, as if saying natural foods are running dry, so go with the alternative. And when the resources for that alternative diminish where do we go next? ......busting out those dump trucks?

To be fair, what the book was intended to be about and what the movie was about are also two entirely different things.

That's not really the deeper meaning. That's the very surface meaning people tend to read into it because it's the simplest theme to parse out.

The main theme is addressing deeper implications of the dehumanization of people by society, the destruction of the environment and squandering of resources, and the social impact of overpopulation. The "hey, guess what Soylent Green is made of?" part is almost an afterthought. It's basically only the MacGuffin that propels the story (by establishing a secret that people are willing to kill to preserve). As much as people focus on the ending, it's most of the stuff leading UP to it that you're more supposed to be paying attention to.

The book is mostly just about overpopulation and global resource inequality, and doesn't really even mention Soylent at all.

I don't think any of those places will ever have real vegan food. They would have to add an entirely new grill which I doubt the kitchens even have room for. The only way I can see them doing true vegan food is if they build entirely new restaurants.

I know. I dont think theyll get vegans. Or real vegans, at least. I think they may get some vegetarians. And maybe the people that treat veganism and vegetarianism like fads. And want to get away with eating something similar. Without knowing that its not vegan or vegetarian because of the grill used. And because they also have to ask for no mayonnaise. You eat "vegetarian food" all the time. Vegetarian food is just anything that doesn't have meat in it, not exclusively things that are specifically made to look like a substitute for meat. I'm not trying to be pedantic, this kind of thing just annoys me because it perpetuates the stereotype that to be vegetarian you have to eat weird gross imitation foods. To be clear, not vegetarian myself though.

A veggie burger isn't even the same thing as an Impossible/Beyond burger anyways
