I tried the Impossible Whopper from Burger King the other day. If you pick off a piece of the patty and eat it by itself, it's very close to meat but not quite right, it tastes too "clean" to be meat. But on the burger, with all the toppings and condiments, it's impossible to tell the difference. Unfortunately, it's also over $1 more.

It's my new go to at BK with no mayo.

Not quite as good as traditional BK(like 90% a whopper) but it is tasty and it might get me more acclimated to eating less meat in the future

It has to be cheaper or it has to taste better. Seems like it's neither at the moment. I'll probably still try it out soon though.

I've tried a Beyond Meat burger, it's pretty good, very close to the real thing.

It absolutely would need to be cheaper for me to switch.

I don't care so much about cost since it is cheap in general. I got a large impossible meal and iirc it was like $9.50. If the regular whopper meal is 8.50 large thats a small enough difference i don't care.

I've tried a small sample of Impossible meat, it was okay and I might not be able to tell the difference if I was eating it blind, but it still didn't taste quite the same to me.

I'd still like to try out an entire meal with it but I don't know if it's something I'd eat regularly. From what I hear it's not even all that healthier (mostly high sodium IIRC) and I feel like if I'm gonna cut back on meat it would be at least in part for health reasons.

i would and do. i also eat animal-based meat. if you can cut down your consumption at all it makes a difference

i could feasibly see myself switching entirely or nearly entirely, but like most people in here the cost is the main issue, but thatll go down with time, it just doesnt really have the economy of scale quite yet

According to an article that I read, the Impossible Burger uses the least healthy variation of the highly processed soy for it's burgers.

Yeah. I read they made their own soy. And so some people arent happy with it. They also use to use gluten. Though, they have changed that. They apparently use a lot of oil, as well. And some people have had some bad reactions to the stuff they use in it. I think they use less healthy things to get it closer to a meat taste. The beyond is suppose to be healthier. But I wonder if they sacrificed taste for health theirs...

Carmine, cochineal extract, crimson lake, carmine lake, natural red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120 are all synonyms and are very, very common in food and cosmetics. It's an aluminum salt of an extract of a scale insect. It's used in many pink, red, and purple food products, particularly yogurt, candy, and juice.

Another commonly eaten insect product is lac, also known as shellac, pharmaceutical glaze, confectioner's glaze, or E904., which is used as a hard coating on pills and candy.

On a less insectual but equally icky note, many artificial flavourings and scents make use of castoreum, a substance extracted from the anal scent glands of beavers. Beaver butt juice is in a good chunk of processed food.

Oh hey. I missed that. I blame the spoiler tags.

As for plant-based meat substitutes, I find the whole concept of "meat substitute" to be terribly silly. If I'm not eating meat in a meal, it's because I don't feel that the meal needs meat. I'm not going to jump through hoops to pretend that my not-meat is meat, I'm going to enjoy some vegetables as they are. This obsession with pretending that vegetarian/vegan dishes are actually meat-based ones has always struck me as stupid, because it doesn't fool anyone and you can have perfectly enjoyable bean burgers and the like.

I dont think thats the issue. See, the whole issue is that making beef isnt good for the Earth, so vegans want omnivores and carnivores to stop eating meat. But people dont because they like the meat and how it taste. So, they made plant based burgers that are suppose to taste like the meat they are trying to be.

I think people can also easily enjoy a bean burger and such. But if people couldnt eat real meat, they would still want something that taste exactly the same (or at lest similar).

That being said, burgers are only a small part. We would still need many different flavors of meat from chicken to pork. Also, more of the cow. Making a burger is one thing. And it took a while to make it, IIRC. Now, they would need to work on things like steak and such...

The earth doesnt really give a fuck

Growing meat as food is bad for humans and the environment we need to survive. The antibiotics make diseases stronger as they become more resistant, the methane is pretty much the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the waste runoff contaminates fresh water sources, and fertilizer runoff causes red tide in the oceans where algae populations explode so rapidly that they make the entire area of the sea hypoxic and everything there dies from lack of oxygen in the water.

When I say bad for the Earth, thats what I mean. The Earth itself will be fine. We just wont be able to live in the surface... Well, out descendants. Not until they evolve to...

As for the antibiotics, out do the same, dont they. I dont see that as the biggest problem as itll most likely happen, anyway...
