Gen 5 was by far my favorite. The leaders were memorable and I loved that it was exclusively new Pokemon until the post game. BW2 also had a lot of great stuff like the one arena thing where you could face tons of former leaders, champions, etc.

The Phys/Spec change is the one big change in the core gameplay that was meaningful and a step forward even for people who dont care about competitive, but it still didnt change the gameplay loop of battling. Which is fine, dont fix what isn't broke.

Actually, best example I can think of is that Pokemon is the JRPG version of Madden. Stuff can change but people mostly buy the new ones for graphics and roster updates.

Gen 1 is nostalgia but when I think about it I immediately remember the absolute lack in variety of Pokemon when heading to Fuschia City and still finding trainers rocking their Pidgeys and Rattatas and bleh.

Gen 2 is super nostalgia because Crystal was the first game I bought but I hate how the level curve is all over the place. There are trainers near Blackthorn rocking Lvl 27 Pokemon when Claire has a Lvl 41 Kingdra. But dat Kanto return tho...

Gen 3 is also nostalgia but also the one where I kinda dropped off and I felt it had a poor variety in wild Pokmon. Best title theme though.

Gen 4 is where I definitely dropped off. I don't hate it, but I don't really care for it.

Gen 5 kinda rekindled my interest. Loved the design of everything, loved the new Pokemon that were the only ones you could use (although it also suffers from some of the same problems Gen 1 had...those damn fucking elemental monkeys man). Pokemon with a story too!

Gen 6 totally rekindled my interest in the series. Fairy-type was a blessing, as now you can catch all Pokemon everywhere. How about a Dragon-type before the second gym? Why not, it has weaknesses now! I had a team of 17 Pokemon I rotated through, loved them all, and loved most of my time with the game. It was just kinda hard to care about the story and the characters. It was peak pure Pokemon gameplay for me.

I went with Gen V, I think it's the best overall.

I'm all over the place but I think that gen 7 had a not terrible story (probably because your character really isn't the main character) and (I think) the most consistently stylish pokemon designs (with a few notable missteps). I probably follow this with gens 5 and then 3. Then 6, then 1, then 2. I mostly rank based on pokemon.

Gen 7 is Sun and Moon dude lol

Some people don't want to remember how bad those games were though

With Gen 8 being an option... is this about the Pokemon themselves or the games? Because I have very different answers depending on that.

There's so much wrong with this post
Thinking SM are bad, thinking SM are worse than LGPE...
Just a modicum of bad taste all around

From my play experience it was very clear Gamefreak put a lot more effort into Let's Go than any of the Alola games.
Not saying Let's Go were great but they were definitely the best of the gen for me.

So any promising new on the new generation? Last I heard, people were digging into that for various reasons.

What? I loved Gen 5 from day 1 and this hasn't changed

I thought a lot of people liked it. Certainly in terms of story it's easily the best one

People used to shit on Gen 5 near-endlessly. It has died down a lot recently.

Hot (maybe) take here: which Pokemon game you prefer largely comes down to aesthetics, such as music or Pokemon designs. Unless you care about the competitive scene, the series hasn't evolved much at all since its inception. Outside of general quality-of-life changes there's mostly just been the addition of gimmicks no one really cares about like double battles or Mega forms. With that in mind, you could vote for virtually any generation and I wouldn't bat an eye.
well it can also be to do with simplicity of the game design/mechanics. Even though the AI is broken, I prefer the simplicity of gen 1 - even starting in gen 2 things start to get a little bloated (berries, eggs, genders, special divided into 2 stats).

I actively dislike Serperior, despite its good design, because they fucked up its stats so goddamn much. A hidden ability you won't get if you pick it as your starter is irrelevant imo. Starters, to me, should be held to different standards.

The random encounter rate was fucking insane in BW, the map forced you into tall grass all the time, and XP scaling made all those battles far less rewarding.

And? I know that gen 1 is primitive compared to later ones, but it was the most fun for me. Trying to say what I liked then and that Pokemon hasn't been as enjoyable since is true, trying to imply that I'm somehow wrong for thinking that way makes you an asshole. Almost no one loves a thing, even a pokemon game, as much as the first version of that thing they fully experience.

So, cordially, go fuck yourself.

I have fond memories of my first DPP playthrough because it was my serious return to Pokemon (not that I stopped playing but somehow it felt like a big deal, I guess since I didn't really like gen 3), and for DPP I did a lot

also there were the B8 projects like our own B8er Gyms

buuut yeah it's pretty slow and it kinda replaces Hoenn WATER with with Sinnoh CAVES... and screw that caves into snow trek... and the other one

but it did also have a lot of cool features so I don't hate it but it's got problems

Since no one's really talking about the merits of Gen 6, I'll just say that the best thing about XY, which make them arguably the best Pokemon games imo, is the huge variety of catchable Pokemon throughout the game. I guess after 6 generations of these games they finally realized hey, there's a fuckton of these critters now, let's put a bunch of em in every area. Maybe this was a byproduct of having such a small crop of new pokeys, but it really made the games stand out in a big way for me. There were just so many options for cool Pokemon to use during the main story and I really liked that.

Yeah, I've noticed this myself. The most recent generation is always the most hated one at the time. Once a new generation comes out, the fanbase turns their attention to bashing the newest generation, which enables fans to talk more positively about the previous generation since the fanbase is too busy bashing the newest generation.

I agree, Serperior was my favorite starter from Gen 5 and that means a lot when the first forms of the starters were the weakest batch of starters we've ever gotten. Gen 8's starters didn't really impress me that much when they were first revealed, but they're still better than Gen 5's starters.

Good story, especially by Pokemon standards, great region, QoL improvements, 150+ new Pokemon, a totally "fresh start" for the series, one of the few that deviated from the formula even slightly (X/Y was so by-the-numbers by comparison).

Castelia City blew my mind when I first got there. As did the bridge approaching it. It was outstanding.

I still say the encounter rate in BW was completely intolerable. People hate on DP for being slow but BW is even slower because even if a single fight is twice as fast, you're getting pulled into three times as many. And thanks to XP scaling you're not leveling up any faster for it.
