I've found some good stuff this way. For a while my entire desk setup was 100% salvage, cobbled together from 3 different mismatched pieces.

A desk or table I might, but anything with cushioning is a hard pass.

My ex got a curb couch.
We found a razor blade in it.

My dad used to all the time, but it was like desks and book shelves and stuff like that. A tv once.

No, but I have thought about it a few times. However, right now I have enough furniture. If I want to get something, I would need to throw something away, and there is nothing I want to throw away.

I remember back in college I was sleeping on my buddy's couch. The next morning I told him, "Man, that's pretty comfortable". He said, "Yeah, we got it at the dump,...don't worry, we Febreezed the **** out of it."

I just moved and down the street neighbors kept puting things out on the curb, including at least a $200 Armoiur. I also drove around on the first weekend I was here and got a bunch of pieces of furniture etc, for under $20 total.

When I hit the yard sales there were a bunch of pieces too big for my car, that were being sold for $3 etc. This insanely nice table for instance, was almost worth renting a truck for. I know have a mini-van though.

This has led me to the thought that you could pretty easily run around collecting good pieces off the curbs, and grabbing the great deals at yard sales, and then sell them on facebook/offer up etc for a significant profit.

Just the things I got on the one day I hit yard sales, I could easily sell for $200+ and I only drove around for a few hours. Now that facebook actually is used by people who are doing yard sales, you can find out where a bunch of big ones are, and hit the little ones you see along the way. Easily stock up on a ton of stuff, then sell it over the week till the next yard sale. With a truck (or minivan like I have) you can even deliver the furniture (for a price hehe).

Main thing you need is a truck/mini van, and a decent amount of storage space.

Oh and a computer with internet connection.

My SO used to live in an area that catered to a lot of college students. When they'd graduate and move away, they'd throw away a lot of their stuff. That's how he got most of his furniture and kitchenware.

Most of my furniture was either inherited from my grandparents, purchased on sale/clearance, was cheap IKEA-type stuff, or bought from Goodwill.

My SO does this. He buys things super cheap and sell them for a lot. Most people don't know the prices of the stuff. He got some kind of table or desk or something for like $20-30. And it was worth $2,500 when he put it online. And then got this statue thing for free. It's worth like $3,000.

I know a lot of people that do that. College kids throw all kinds of stuff away. Though, more are selling it on facebook these days, as well...

That reminds me of the AITA post on Reddit. Basically, the OP went on their usual walk, saw some fancy furniture on the street, went back for it, and then sold it for like +30k. When the family that threw it away found out how much it was worth, they demanded the money! They even followed the OP home from their walk to ask for it.

Luckily, no one has done that to him. He also made a lot from selling his grandmothers items. When she passed away, most of the family took everything they thought was valuable. And left everything else for him. He was cleaning the house and getting ready for it to sell and had to get rid of everything they left. So, since anlotnofnthe furniture was still nice and he didnt need any of it, he decided to sell them. When he looked up the furniture, most of it was super old and would sell for a lot. Idk of anyone knew about it, but they havent asked for any money, so...

I worked in Silicon Valley in the early 2000's, so I did pretty well. All the house flipping and crazy money flying around made people very wasteful. Couch doesn't match the new drapes? Get rid of it. New flat screen doesn't fit in the TV cabinet? Toss it. New gadget came out with slightly higher resolution or faster processing than the old? Junk it. Looking back it was crazy what people would throw away.

My dad met this Afghani guy who had just come from Afghanistan to the US on a lottery. He knew nothing about America and didn't know english, it was like a completely new world for him.

Anyways, he got himself an apartment but didn't have any furniture. One day my dad goes to his place and sees that the place was fully furnished. My dad was shocked but didn't say anything, the guy didn't even have a job yet! When my dad finally asked him, he said he had been going on the street and seeing all the cool stuff people were throwing out and brought a lot of the stuff home and cleaned them off a little. A lot of the stuff looked perfectly fine to me.
