So those foods make up 99.9% of my diet. I don't know how to cook so I never make any homemade meals. My motto is "If it's food, it's food!". The whole point of food is to eat it when you feel hungry. So, if someone only eats fast and processed food for life, is there any negatives?

Most of it is high in saturated fats and salt. Those aren't good for you in high doses.

Prepare your own nutritious meals with fresh ingredients. Tastes better and much better for you.

Foods high in preservatives (what processing does, makes food last for ever, so they can sell it cheaper) do not correctly digest inside your body. The preservatives that protect them from expiring, protect them from being digested in your body.

This is why processed foods make you fat, unhealthy, and dramatically increase your chances of cancer growths.

Fun fact: It is significantly more cancerous to occasionally eat preserved red meats, than it is to smoke a entire pack of cigarettes a day.

1) Learn. There are many websites with meal plans and recipes to follow.

2) Almost everything is an acquired taste, especially when you are used to processed foods. Processed foods are often artificially flavoured, so their flavours are much more intense than more natural foods. If you're used to those flavours then natural foods like veggies will taste bland to you.

The fix is to stop eating as much (ideally, all) processed stuff and get on the whole food train.

As with anything, though, you're setting yourself up for failure if you try to change too much all at once. Make it more gradual by limiting yourself to two "cheat" foods per day or something, with the goal of eliminating them altogether.

Just being honest, not being a dick here. Learning to cook, very basic meals, is extremely easy. Maybe it's an intimidation thing because you aren't familiar with it, but it's a really simple thing to catch on to and a good skill to have. You really should just make an attempt at a simple meal, steam some broccoli and bake chicken, with a generous amount of seasoning. Hell, get a George Foreman grill or an air fryer and you literally just have to put it on, and watch the time.

I can't tell you how much a significant other appreciates someone who will do some cooking also.

Because I didn't need to cook as a kid or teen. I never even turned on the oven/stove in my house currently. I don't have a toaster or toaster oven, or blender. I don't have a pot, I only have 1 skillet in my possession which I don't use. I don't have the thing you put in the oven to bake or cook things either.

Also, someone to learn how to

1) Turn on a stove and know how to use it(i dunno if mine even turns on!)
2) what "pre heating" means
3) How to chop things

Well these things are pretty simple.

1. Usually your stove has a set of dials or other controls either in front of or behind the burners ("eyes"). They'll be labeled to show which eye is controlled by which dial. To cook on it, put a pot or pan on the eye with food in it. If you're cooking pasta or otherwise boiling something, you're usually fine but depending on your pot/pan, you'll want to use nonstick cooking spray or oil to keep food from sticking to the pan.

2. Just means you get the oven/stove/grill/etc to temperature before putting the food in.

3. Just grab a knife and cutting board and cut it up. Put the food on the cutting board and cut it with the knife. If you want to get technical, the technique does vary from food item to food item, and there are guides you can follow, but generally it's not a big deal if you just chop it however. It can make a bigger difference than you might expect, but it's not like it's going to make or break your dish.

To follow up on 2, most ovens when you set the temperature will have an indicator light that the oven is heading up. When the light turns off, and most ovens will beep or chime when it's ready, you are preheated and ready to insert food. Unless otherwise specified, always put the food on the middle rack. Too high can burn the surface while not fully cooking the inside.

About the chopping, this video's pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Fg7l7G1zw" data-time="

The key is to have a sharp knife, because you need less force to cut food, making it actually much safer. The grip is also important - it's unintuitive but putting the tip of your finger on the flat of the blade make it easier to control, again making it safer. For this reason a bigger knife is usually better, but if you don't have one, just buy whatever you can afford. And always do the "claw" grip to avoid chopping your fingers - tuck the finger tips behind the knuckle so there's literally no way you'll cut your finger.

Don't worry about the speed, just focus on taking the above safety measures. If you're wondering which specific foods you should practice chopping first, go with onions and garlic, as in the video. They're in almost every dish because they pack a lot of flavour, so the biggest time saver is to work on being comfortable chopping them.

Buy a pack of fresh chicken breast from the market. Get a large mixing bowl and create a brine with sea salt and warm water, so the salt dissolves. Once the water cools, add the thawed chicken breast into the mixing bowl, cover the top of the bowl in saran wrap and place in the fridge overnight.

IMPORTANT know the weight of the chicken, as labeled on the packaging, as that will effect how long the chicken needs to cook.

The next day, get a flat pan for your oven, lay out the brined chicken on the pan after you spray it down with a cooking spray, like PAM. Coat the meat lightly with olive oil, season it generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano and a bit of basil. You can add others to taste. Season both sides so there's a coating on the meat.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, depending on the size of the chicken, it should cook for 22 to 28 minutes. Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer (very cheap at most grocery stores) and your goal is an internal temperature of about 170 degrees F.

If that temperature is achieved, pull the pan out of the oven and rest it on the stove for about 5 to 10 minutes, and it's ready to serve.

You don't even need things to have tons of ingredients and take a lot of time. Fast food is super expensive compared to food you make at home

Chicken breast: 75 cents
Serving of pasta: 20 cents
Serving of your favorite vegetable: 50 cents
Serving of your favorite sauce: 10 cents
Sprinkle of your favorite cheese: 10 cents

$1.65 to completely stuff your face with delicious food

Boil water, throw pasta and veggies in for 8 minutes
Heat pan on 8/10 and throw chicken in and cover it for 15 min

You're done. You literally just turned the stove on. There is nothing to learn.

It's 20c per *serving*. A box of dry pasta is $1 and has 5 big meals in it, cause it gets bigger when you cook it. Chef boyardee is already cooked and it's more expensive -- you only get a tiny can for $1. Pasta you cook is a big box for $1

The water has bubbles in it like soda when it's boiling. They start out small and eventually the bubbles get really big and the water moves all around like it's about to explode (but it doesn't, it just keeps moving)

There's nothing special about boiling the water, it's just a way to tell that it's hot enough - it boils at around 200F. You can still cook pasta if it's not boiling in like 180F water

There's nothing special about boiling the water, it's just a way to tell that it's hot enough - it boils at around 200F. You can still cook pasta if it's not boiling in like 180F water

thanks so much!

Huh, fair enough. Here in the UK you have to (or at least did when I was at school) do Home Economics as a class once a week for the first two years of high school, so that everyone learns basic cooking and diet/nutrition advice.

yeah american schools are really big on critical thinking skills and passing tests. Also american history propaganda. I never learned about any history besides America's "victories" and I never took any skills based classes

two questions:

1) What if you don't know how to cook

I'm genuinely happy to see that you've gotten plenty positive info so far in this topic, but serious question - how did you reach adulthood without being able to do basic cooking? Did you never do any with your parents? Or Home Economics/Home Sciences at school?

It wasn't required that I had to cook in my entire life. My parents did all the cooking so I didn't have to. I didn't take Home Economics or Home sciences in high school.

ahh, maybe that's why british people cook so well!

Here in the US, you just take Math, Science, English, S.S. You can take electives in music, art, spanish, PE, etc, but education is very relaxed and you don't learn any life skill in high school like finances, cooking, mechanics, etc.
