Saw it in an episode of modern family just now which was odd because a friend of mine was just telling me the other week that they had to do beach cleanup for their senior year to graduate. My high school never had anything of the sort so wondering if it's a regional thing.

I've never even heard of something like that in New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania, so I guess a regional thing (I suspect certain select school districts in certain regions).

From NYC here. It wasn't required to get into all colleges, but the good ones definitely needed it.

It was whatever you could find. I volunteered at my local hospital and a community center.

Edit: Oh wait, graduate high school? The fuck. Nah, that was never a requirement.

I think all schools should do it.

Turning volunteerism into an obligation, is a good way to sour the idea of volunteering ever again.

Nope. I did join a club one year that required volunteer hours (feel like it might have been twenty hours), but we could get those by doing club activities.

Requiring volunteer hours to graduate is honestly not a good practice. Lots of kids have to work and don't have time to do a hundred hours of volunteer work. Or, like me, don't have a means of transportation (until I got my license, but even then my mom flipped out about me going anywhere).

We had our required "sophomore projects" that we did on our own time throughout the course of the entire year, which required 10 hours of community service.

Requiring volunteer hours

If it's required, it's no longer volunteer.
All that does is make kids want to get it over with and never have to do it again, and thus failing to actually learn anything about volunteerism.

Yeah, I ended up volunteering at a food bank to meet the quota. I was a bigger guy so I was tasking with carrying bags of stuff from cars to the floor. Between cars I'd pop behind the building to get acquainted with my one hitter, so it wasn't too bad.

This but they allowed a monetary donation as well. I was willing to do the community service, I was there ready to go but after a hour of standing around bullshiting I just slapped down some money and walked out.

In my Junior year English class we were supposed to do something one semester (like 10 hours or ... 16? I don't remember), but the grading system was broken so I wound up still getting a C even without doing it and the teacher never questioned it.

We had to do a Senior year project, too, which consisted of doing some sort of special project - usually something in the community, assistant coaching a junior league team or providing guitar lessons or something - writing an essay on that subject, and giving a presentation on the essay and our personal experience. I also didn't really do this to be honest. The only reason I slapped something together was because they said I wouldn't be allowed to go on this two week long trip to Germany if I didn't, so I knocked it out in one weekend >_>.

@Hexenherz

I had an experience like this. Long story short, I was required to do "volunteer" work for a high school class. However, I didn't know how to drive at the time in order to get to any of the "volunteer" places (where those places really should have been hiring actual workers and paying them, but got high school kids instead to do "volunteer" work they didn't need to pay them for) and my parents couldn't drive me to where I had to go and walking was out of the question since I was in the middle of nowhere and I couldn't get a ride from anyone else. The teacher was an asshole and didn't want to hear excuses. So rather than risk walking through a forest environment for hours where either a bear or snake might attack me or illegally take one of my parents cars and do a real life version of Grand Theft Auto (most likely hitting and crashing into who knows what since my only driving experience at the time was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on Playstation 2), I just took the hit of points being taken off my grade. I was lucky enough to get a "B -" since I scored extremely high on all the tests, but sadly lost a shit load of points because I couldn't complete the "volunteer" hours. There were a few others that took the same hit and ended up with a "C" grade because they were in a similar situation as me.

We needed 100 hours in 7th grade. I tutored kids with disabilities at a rec center for my hours. Probably did closer to 200 hours since it was 3 days a week for about 2 hours a night.

My participation in government class required some number of hours, (I think it might have only been 10) can't really remember. I helped out with a kids church program, probably shouldn't have counted now that I think about it.

I live in upstate New York.
