Before Clue, I tried my hardest to watch Atlas Shrugged, but it was so damn boring. And why even set it up as financial post-apocalypse if the whole dang movie takes place in gaudy af board rooms and hotels? Total bait n switch.

I made it 40 minutes or so in and just couldn't anymore.

Last two movies I watched we Chalie/Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I watched the Johnny Depp one then the Gene Wilder one. I like the tone of the Johnny Depp one more, but the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka and the songs are better in the first one. Also I liked the grandpa from the Gene Wilder one more as well.

I didn't like the Johnny Depp one at all. They say it's closer to the source material but ignoring that, the Gene Wilder one had a perfect contrast in tones of whimsy and creepy without feeling like it had to beat you over the head with it (except for the especially blunt tunnel scene). Johnny Depp's was, unsurprisingly, that Tim Burton Nightmare Before Christmas paint job I have never liked eclipsing all sense of whimsy, which really destroyed the whole purpose of creepy undertones.

I definitely will say that Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka actually makes a lot more sense than Gene Wilder's, considering he's a total shut-in and has been for who even knows how long, so Gene Wilder's highly charismatic performance really didn't fit the story at all. But on the other hand, Gene's performance was better suited to the tone of his film than something like Depp's would have been, so I consider it a well-made tradeoff regardless.

Silverado
it was a pretty solid western with a great cast. Although, I liked tombstone and the man with no name series a bit better. Definitely up there, though.

Well here it goes...

Days of Heaven This movie was somewhat of a tough sell for me since the 1910s aren't exactly a captivating time for me in regards to period pieces, but I want to watch Malick's first five films in chronological order, and it's already been a good year & a half since I watched Badlands. Obviously, as a Malick film, the movie is aesthetically gorgeous through & through; the first act is a bit of a drag, so the scenery was vital to keeping me invested at first. For the most part the film was sitting on an 8/10, but the riveting, biblical locust swarm + fire scene brought the movie to new heights, which it managed to consistently remain at for the rest of the film. Stylistically, the film definitely mirrors Malick's previous work; in particular, the shootout scene brought back immediate memories of Badlands' climax, and then of course there's the element of both films being narrated from the POV of an inquisitive - if not somewhat apathetic - young woman in a bit over her head. While I found Spacek's character in Badlands to be the more captivating protagonist, Linda Manz's character had undeniably the better payoff - the ending scene was the cherry on top of one of the 1970s' most gorgeous, life-affirming films; a reminder of how beautiful and open the world can be, even in the face of tragedy and economic strife. Still not 100% positive I'd rank it above Badlands, but I'd give the movie a strong 9/10. It'll be interesting watching The Thin Red Line from here & observing how Malick's style had changed/evolved after twenty years of inactivity.

Bone Tomahawk Another slow burn movie, this one was more of a mixed bag. Again, the first act was a bit of a drag... definitely more so than Days of Heaven. Not only was it slow-paced, but the town scenes also felt weirdly... scattered. Idk how it explain it. The central narrative wasn't particularly captivating, but the main cast - particularly Richard Jenkins - carries the film considerably. Richard Jenkins in general is an actor whose mere presence elevates whatever it is he's in, and the hospitable, gentlemanly Chicory just might be his most lovable role yet - a comforting moral compass character, whom serves as a vital foil to an otherwise grotesque, vicious film. Prior to my viewing I'd already heard horror stories of the film's brutal carnage, and I gotta say it lives up to the hype; while there are a few movie scenes that have haunted me more, that one execution is easily the single most brutal on-screen death I've seen in a movie ever. What's really impressive, though, is how the film employs an enduring sense of dread (overused term, I know) equally visceral to its gory scenes, which many "bloodbath" movies tend to disregard; there were several points where I flat-out just didn't want the movie to go on. Overall I'm oscillating between a 7-8/10 here.

Last movie I watched was Eighth Grade

Wasn't as good as a "coming of age" movie as I thought it was going to be. It was pretty cut and dry and too predictable.

Its hard for me to imagine a movie of that genre living up to the accolades its received so far.

About to watch The Last Jedi again. First time since seeing it opening night. Tbh, I never understood all the hate. Outside of the casino part, I remember it being a pretty solid film. Then again, I'm not some hardcore fanboy whose panties get all in a bunch because a character does something that I don't think they should do.

A little late but I think I might give it an 8.5/10 - good movie. also I think this might've actually been the first classical noir film I ever watched... damn.

Guess that means Casablanca will have to be the next classic-era movie I scratch off my list after Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

Rocky III

I would actually put this one almost on par with the first Rocky. The cinematography was great, and I loved the concept of Apollo and Rocky teaming up. I also loved how they shifted Rocky's role to mirror Apollo in 1 , which foreshadowed both the result of the mid-film match and said teamup.

Nice also that they remembered Adrian's character development in 1, despite 2 completely forgetting it, and they developed Apollo nicely off-camera too. My one major complaint is that Paulie never learns a dang thing, to the point that there's no point of even writing him in at this point to have the same failed maturation story for a third time.

Well I can see why it's the fan favorite, but personally I think I prefer the original for its pacing/build-up and more "pure" horror approach. The humor was kinda hit-or-miss for me, maybe a little more hit than miss at least - the laughter scene being an obvious standout & a near-perfect blend of the film's main two genres. The utilization of stop-motion animation definitely deserves a mention too & makes me wish more live-action horror movies would incorporate it. All-in-all I'd say it's probably one of the better films of its genre, both from the 80's in general. 7/10

First Love: Litter on the Breeze

Actor/Musician/Writer Eric Kot is approached by director Wong Kar-Wai (who acts as producer here) to make a film about first love. Wong's cinematographer Christopher Doyle shoots the film, which Kot creates as a documentary/fiction hybrid that playfully pays tribute to the senior director. I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to any fan of Wong Kar-wai if you can get a hold of it.

Biker Boyz

I rather liked the climax (but not the ending) but otherwise it was pretty unremarkable and had some lame dialog here and there.

Main reason I watched it was to see Laurence Fishburne as a biker, which turned out to be every bit as unintentionally funny as it sounds.

Paddington 2, just to see what all the hubbub is about. It was cute and funny enough for adults (I burst out laughing when the dad did yoga between the trains), but nothing world shattering. I kinda wish they would have spent a little less time in jail and more time with Peter Capaldi's xenophobia.

very different tone from the original series but i liked it for the most part, as i think you know TC, lol.

and that reminds me, i accidentally let my watchthrough thread purge, but it's not so bad i guess, cuz it was nearing 500 anyway. probably best to start fresh for a new ep. gonna do that probably today or maybe tomorrow.

Sounds good - I'm in! Btw now that you've had some time to contemplate it, what do you think you'd rate the movie? Would you say you liked it more or less than seasons 1 & 2?
