Last two movies I watched we Chalie/Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I watched the Johnny Depp one then the Gene Wilder one. I like the tone of the Johnny Depp one more, but the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka and the songs are better in the first one. Also I liked the grandpa from the Gene Wilder one more as well.

I didn't like the Johnny Depp one at all. They say it's closer to the source material but ignoring that, the Gene Wilder one had a perfect contrast in tones of whimsy and creepy without feeling like it had to beat you over the head with it (except for the especially blunt tunnel scene). Johnny Depp's was, unsurprisingly, that Tim Burton Nightmare Before Christmas paint job I have never liked eclipsing all sense of whimsy, which really destroyed the whole purpose of creepy undertones.

I definitely will say that Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka actually makes a lot more sense than Gene Wilder's, considering he's a total shut-in and has been for who even knows how long, so Gene Wilder's highly charismatic performance really didn't fit the story at all. But on the other hand, Gene's performance was better suited to the tone of his film than something like Depp's would have been, so I consider it a well-made tradeoff regardless.
