Last movie I watched was Sleepaway Camp (1983), which I've already given my detailed thoughts on in a couple topics. Went Criterion shopping recently & bought Detour (1945), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and Days of Heaven (1978) - haven't decided which one to start with, but I'm thinking maybe the latter.

Last movie I watched was the Hateful 8.

Solid movie but it wasnt my favorite. Basically a who done it/heist movie set in the west. I was expecting a western more along the lines of True Grit.

Samuel L Jacksons role was great. I really liked the letter element and who the last two characters are.

I still remember how confusing it was having that movie, The Ridiculous 6 & The Magnificent Seven all be released within one year's time span.

Are you a fan of his or was the subject matter just too uncomfortable to handle? Or was it just the fact that the movie's four hours long?

it was the subject matter. when it came out i followed most of the news regarding it and had always thought the dude was kinda fucked up to begin with. i made it mostly through the first part and just thought, thats enough for now...

the stupid fucking parents and the whole thing is just fucked and depressing...

mid90s

It was alright. I was fully entrenched in mid 90s skate culture, so I definitely appreciated the aesthetic. They nailed that aspect.

I feel like Jonah Hill couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted to do a slice-of-life movie or follow a typical narrative structure. A lot of the plot points felt unresolved.

Deadwood

I started the series after GoT's ended and finished it, and then watched the movie.I really enjoyed the series and the movie, I am glad that I forced myself to start because I was canceling HBO Now.

Dark/gritty and unexpectedly humorous.

I want to see that as well.

Is there comedy to it or just a love letter to skate culture? I live in California so it never really died out. Was definitely more popular in the 90s.

It's equal parts love letter to mid 90s skate culture, comedy and drama. I honestly feel like it would have been a better movie had it just focused on the first part.

The Defender, originally titled The Bodyguard from Beijing, starring Jet Li.

It was an alright movie. The general flaw is that both the story and action scenes seem a bit restrained and formulaic compared to Jet Li's other films. The version of the film released in the United States, like many of Jet Li's other Hong Kong films, is edited down and contained only the English dub.

Galaxy Quest. It wasn't as laugh out loud funny as I heard it was, but it was still really enjoyable. Alan Rickman and Tony Shalhoub were great as always.

Hope you like Detour and Days of Heaven.

Honestly I'm still completely stuck as to which one I'll watch first, but I'm kinda leaning towards Umbrellas of Cherbourg...

In the meantime I'm still kinda craving more horror flicks, so I think I'm just gonna watch The VVitch tonight.

Eh, sort of a let down. Casting was spot on & Eggers got the early-17th century atmosphere/aesthetic down to a T, but the film felt extremely lacking in payoff, among other things. The scene with the baby early on was fucking terrifying & made me nauseous, but that only made the rest of the films duration feel more dissatisfying by contrast. Ending was alright I guess. 6/10

Very interesting sci-fi film I would probably watch again (there's a bit of mystery/thriller in there as well). The beach scenes were filmed about an hour and half away from me which was pretty cool to see.

A usual solid film from Pixar. Liked the premise and the (under)world they built. A bit too predicable but it is Pixar after all. Looked like they did their research on Mexican folk culture.

Kill Switch.

A direct-to-DVD Steven Seagal movie. The premise is okay-ish, but the execution was awful. Seagal's one-sided beatdowns as fight scenes, Seagal's corny-as-hell acting, the story plagued with plotholes, and the editing during action scenes is very choppy and disorienting.

It also seems that police brutality is apparently not a problem in Kill Switch's universe. Whenever I watch a Seagal film, I generally keep my expectations low but damn, it's so bad.

I think it was Clue.

Christopher Lloyd as Prof Plum was one of the greatest things in film history tbh. Tim Curry as the butler was good too, though this was all more or less condensed in the end.

I loved the film's casual tone in contrast with serious subject matter, and the way the cast continually got more or more numb to the whole thing, which more or less became the joke of the overall film.

But ultimately, while fun and amusing, it really wasn't particularly substantial.

I just watched Only God Forgives. I was wondering why I never heard about it since it has Ryan Gosling in it. Now I know. Movie was weird as fuck. That incest shit with the mom was nah. Plus I just couldn't take that Thai cop seriously. He did not look like the bad ass supercop they tried so hard to make him look like.

Half the time I couldn't tell if shit was actually happening or if they were trying to be symbolic. Either way, the message felt pretty wasted on me because I did not get the point of that movie.

I was really disappointed. At first I thought it was gonna be another one like Drive. Nope. 1/5 imo.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

This movie cracked me up for one reason. There is a big feud in town over building a new train stop. Some want it because all the people coming in will help the town, and people are opposed cause they will tear down old buildings to build it. Like this movie is set in 2019. Why do they act like people are traveling around by train???
