Bone Tomahawk Another slow burn movie, this one was more of a mixed bag. Again, the first act was a bit of a drag... definitely more so than Days of Heaven. Not only was it slow-paced, but the town scenes also felt weirdly... scattered. Idk how it explain it. The central narrative wasn't particularly captivating, but the main cast - particularly Richard Jenkins - carries the film considerably. Richard Jenkins in general is an actor whose mere presence elevates whatever it is he's in, and the hospitable, gentlemanly Chicory just might be his most lovable role yet - a comforting moral compass character, whom serves as a vital foil to an otherwise grotesque, vicious film. Prior to my viewing I'd already heard horror stories of the film's brutal carnage, and I gotta say it lives up to the hype; while there are a few movie scenes that have haunted me more, that one execution is easily the single most brutal on-screen death I've seen in a movie ever. What's really impressive, though, is how the film employs an enduring sense of dread (overused term, I know) equally visceral to its gory scenes, which many "bloodbath" movies tend to disregard; there were several points where I flat-out just didn't want the movie to go on. Overall I'm oscillating between a 7-8/10 here.
