Like some sort of massive operation to dig a pit to hell?

How early in history did people find out that you can't do that?

It actually doesn't take too long to reach a depth that is unsustainable by hand (200 meters or so I believe). In theory though you could find a place with hard rock etc that extends down further, and then slowly mine down, but I believe the deepest man made mines are still only about 150 meters or so.

What you could do is something along the lines of a reverse pyramid, and it would take a ton of time and manpower. The base of the pyramid would be at ground level and each level down would be slightly smaller. By originally digging large, then filling in the sides with stone, you could probably dig far deeper using only simple tools (much like building a pyramid in reverse, butactually slightly easier since your going down instead of up).

Why didn't anyone do this? Probably because you can't see it.....so what would be the point.

Also that the further down you dig, the more pressurized and hot it is.

Expendable slavery ended before the ability to breach bedrock existed

chattel slavery ended before nitroglycerin could be given to "Temporary Foreign Workers"... the temporary meaning they exploded... but now you have a railroad.

Project Mohole was only able to reach a depth of 601 feet below the sea floor in 11,700 feet of water. Its goal was to reach the Mohorovicic discontinuity, or Moho, which marks the boundary between the crust and the mantle, about 15,000 feet below the ocean floor. The project was abandoned due to lack of funding in 1966.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole reached a depth of 40,230 feet, but it was drilled through continental crust, where the Moho lies about 116,000 feet down. The temperature at the bottom of the hole was 356F (180C). The project ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Perhaps Hell appealed to nobody back in those times, thus no reason to even try reaching it.

Unionized troglodytes. Been around since forever.
Call before you dig.

They've recently allowed India to dig up some coal in northern Australia.

idk, the Graboids are scarier. However, on top of all that, now you also have to worry about CHUDs.
