Its goal was to reach the Mohorovicic discontinuity, or Moho, which marks the boundary between the crust and the mantle, about 15,000 feet below the ocean floor. The project was abandoned due to lack of funding in 1966. The Kola Superdeep Borehole reached a depth of 40,230 feet, but it was drilled through continental crust, where the Moho lies about 116,000 feet down. The temperature at the bottom of the hole was 356F (180C).
