Asking for a friend

My friend says that the entire system changed a few weeks back and has had back issues since then, despite the old way requiring alot more lifting

Yes.

I'm in almost the exact same boat (like almost word for word) and it's the final straw for me looking for a new one.

That depends.

1. Is this job good enough to warrant trying to find a workaround?

2. If yes, then is there something that can be done to mitigate the pain?

If the answer to either of those answers is no, then your friend should find another job. If the answers to both are yes, then go for the workaround.

Example: One year, I got seasonal work at Macy's as a stockroom associate. Walking on concrete for long periods hurt so bad that I could barely walk at the end of the day. I needed that job, so my workaround was buying Dr. Scholl's shoe inserts. Saved my feet.

I just saw a chiropractor. It took a while, but after a year I was pain free. Never had back problems like that again. Even doing the same type of jobs. Maybe your friend should try one.

I'd tough it out for a month or so to see if it gets better. Might just be the new way of doing things and need to strengthen certain areas of body. That said, if it is ongoing and there is another option, get out. Lifelong health is more important.

Ask for accommodation

That doesn't happen without a disability.

Not talking about an ADA accommodation. Need to tell management that the job is hurting you. They don't want to have to do worker's comp.

Most jobs will just tell you you can't work there if you can't do the job.

Yep, I can vouch. Occasionally if you're lucky you might get the right manager on the right day who gives you slightly easier tasks for a day or two, but without a doctor's note it definitely won't be a long term thing.
