cost-wise, it makes much more sense to stay outside the main city and commute in.

NYC subway system is fine, get a metro card, fill it up, then just use google maps and it will tell you exactly what trains to get on when and where

there's no wifi so i always suggest taking a screenshot of the directions before going down into the subway

just be careful during rush hour, on the weekends tho unless there's a big event i've found the subway is pretty empty

in manhattan, you get reception at stations. but you loose signal between stops

i'd rely on a combination of subwaytime.mta.info and google maps once in the city

I had no issues with NYC my two times there. Subway and such all run super often.

However if you are going to Metlife Stadium for any reason, just cab/uber. My god the transit there and back is putrid.

Anime NYC which is at the Javits Convention Center... It looks like that's in Manhattan? Best spot I found is just east over the bridge.

It's very close to penn station, I live in Jersey and I usually take a train to there then it's like a 15-20 minute walk to the Center

All of the subways have wifi now.

Also if you're going to be going to the javits center, you can pretty much stay anywhere in Manhattan (preferably the west side). There's no reason to stay in another borough.

Price and quality wise. I'm splitting the cost but if I'm saving a 100 bucks a night, I don't mind commuting.

You can stay in a hotel in midtown for $120/night. Staying in NJ would save you maybe $20 and you'd have to spend that on the NJT ticket to Penn anyway.

You won't save that. Just look into the residence inn or any of those budget hotels and you'll find something cheap that's walking distance to your convention.

I would be shocked if a convention affected hotel prices. Midtown itself has hundreds of hotels to service Broadway shows year round.

If you decide to stay outside of Manhattan, keep in mind that subways run 24/7, but the PATH and NJT trains do not. If you really insist on staying elsewhere, I'd recommend Long Island City or Hunter's Point in Queens (nice skyline views and near the 7 train, which will make your commute easy). Under no circumstances should you stay in Newark as someone very cruelly suggested.

As someone who lives in the city, trust Seph on this. Commuting from NJ is a horrible idea. Don't. There's hotels with tiny rooms all over midtown and you were going to need a metrocard anyway so you won't be saving that money.

I'm also partial to Brooklyn, fun youth hotels here that tend to be less pricy than midtown. Give them a shot.

I don't think it's quite that pricey but pastrami is an expensive meat at any Jewish deli. I would definitely only eat there if you're really into deli food or are here for several weeks though, yeah.

You can theoretically stay anywhere, even Long Island or New Jersey, but Manhattan would certainly be easier if you can find a hotel at a decent price.

The Javits Center is a block from the last stop on the 7 line. Alternatively, its a 10 minute walk (or a bus ride) from Penn Station.

I've gone both years. I felt it was worth it. I stopped going to NYCC years ago because it was too crowded and anime content was pushed to the side. It was created by the guy who ran New York Anime Festival before it was merged into NYCC.

Can't help much with where to stay because I live on Long Island and take the train in, but if you guys have any questions about the con itself, I can try to answer them.

LA is entirely spread out. You can't really public transport as a tourist because you don't really want to be stuck in one place for a long period of time. Very much should rent a car(Or pay kind of crazy uber fees) otherwise you will be stuck devoting so much time to travel.
