If you want to deal a death blow to small town small businesses, a $15 federal minimum wage is certainly an effective way to do it. Everyone cheering about "taking down big corporations" as mom and pop shops quietly close down.

Layoffs and closures happen at every level of industry. In the rural areas, often the major business is places like Walmart and fast food chains.

If they wanted, Dems could have asked for a $1 increase and possibly have the GOP go along with it.

lol if you think that

Subsidized labor makes a lot more sense than minimum wage tbh.

Have the gov't chip in a few bucks per hour/a few k per year for everybody. Labor stays cheap for the employer, employees can live better, poor people get the biggest boost proportionally speaking, people are encouraged to work, the uneven tax brackets that fund it shift aid to the poor.

Subsidies do have their downsides but not even remotely as badly as price floors do.

I so sad how ce can judge the right of a business to exist based on their ability to pay their employee's every expense.

Good to see that we all support small business here.

Bunch of frigging corporate shills

They're not only corporate shills, it's also a malicious ploy by democrats to permanently cripple the smaller mostly red states. How the fuck are Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and dozens of other states supposed to absorb the increase when Seattle barely could?

Minimum wage is dumb and fixes nothing. It just raises prices and devalues the pay of others

That's a character flaw if you didn't care about your job, even if it was retail/entry level.
Your work ethic is a direct reflection of your character

Some jobs are purely transactional.

I was paid to do a job at $X an hour and I was much better value than most of my coworkers for that $X an hour. Why do I need to be emotionally invested in the overall status of the store?

Is it a character flaw that I recommended other places to buy e.g. HDMI cords or talked people towards TVs that were better value for their money because it meant that my store's profits decreased?

You don't owe an employer any more than they negotiate with you. It's great if you can find a job where both sides want to do more (my favorite jobs have been like that).

Not really

I worked retail for 8 years. I cared to do a good job, but retail is a BS job unless you are management. The stakes arent high if you fuck up and the job doesnt ever follow you home.

Your performance at your job is a reflection of you as a person. You should care about doing your job well. I don't see how you can argue against that, without making classist statements/assumptions.

It's not about owing your employer. It's about being a decent human and realizing that it's a bad reflection on your character if you're intentionally doing your job poorly because you think you're above it.

Even when I was a mall porter in my early twenties -- I definitely made sure everything I cleaned was spotless. Not because I cared about the cleaning contractor -- or the mall in general for that matter; I did my best because I don't want someone looking at my work and either saying, "wow - what an incompetent fuck" or looking at my work and saying, "no wonder you're working a cleaning job" or something classist along those lines.

It's about self respect and maintaining integrity and dignity.
