Some jobs are purely transactional.

I was paid to do a job at $X an hour and I was much better value than most of my coworkers for that $X an hour. Why do I need to be emotionally invested in the overall status of the store?

Is it a character flaw that I recommended other places to buy e.g. HDMI cords or talked people towards TVs that were better value for their money because it meant that my store's profits decreased?

You don't owe an employer any more than they negotiate with you. It's great if you can find a job where both sides want to do more (my favorite jobs have been like that).


It's not about owing your employer. It's about being a decent human and realizing that it's a bad reflection on your character if you're intentionally doing your job poorly because you think you're above it.
