It always amazes me how many people I'll be on calls with for work who have beeping detectors. Or YouTubers with beeping going on in their videos. Had dinner at a buddies house once and all his were beeping. I have no idea how people can tolerate it, much less sleep.

Probably about annually, though it'll occasionally happen that I'll forget and it'll start beeping at me. Then I change it.

I had to replace mine completely as they were old and they are all the type you can't replace the batteries. You actually have to throw the whole thing away. Because it's the LAW

That's actually a pretty good idea. I bought sealed carbon monoxide detectors for our bedrooms that supposedly will last 10 years and signal end of life. I'm skeptical that they'll actually last 10 years, but we'll see.

If I even remember to put the battery back in after I remove it so I can use my broiler without it going off. Huh, the smoke detector and battery are on the shelf, still, since the last time I broiled, a couple of weeks ago. I'll get around to hooking it up again.

Took the batteries out and never put them back in due to them going off all the time.

At the very least, potentially fraudulent from an insurance perspective.

Well, not *quite* whenever it starts beeping as I'm not physically capable of that. But that's when I call out my housing association to help do it.

I just replaced all of mine, they were from the 90's and I got tired of replacing batteries.

I love the new ones, probably won't last the full 10 years but even if they last half that I would be happy.

Did you know you're supposed to replace your smoke detector itself every 10 years?

Many detectors use a tiny amount of radioactive americium which decays over time. Others use optical sensors that lose their sensitivity as they age. And all detectors get dusty, which prevents smoke from entering, and other components such as capacitors can begin to leak or fail as they get older. And technology is always improving, making newer detectors small, less prone to false alarms, and more reliable.
