and yet I'm sure most melee players still had no idea who this marth dude was or who roy was

you can't throw those characters at people without much context and expect them to know what the series is

they were introduced to marth and roy they had no idea what fire emblem even played like and even after melee they still had no idea who these boys were

they just saw them as cool sword men and that's about it

Fire Emblem didn't Get noticed they did the fact they were in this fire emblem series that nobody outside japan knew of didn't come across anyone's mind

The Internet was a thing back in 2001, people knew what Fire Emblem was. Hell, one of my first experiences on-line was finding out about Final Fantasy II, III, and V back in 98 and I was WAY late to the party. Everyone one knew about the games and probably played a translated ROM by then. Even so, V never got released in the states for another year and a half.

Hell, I wasn't even a fan of Nintendo between the SNES and when I played Smash in 2002 and the first thing I said when I saw Marth and Roy was :"Oh cool, they have Fire Emblem characters in Smash!" Trust me, from someone who was a teenager in the late 90's/early 00's, people knew.

I didnt know where they where from at first but smash made me curious enough to look it up. Im sue many others did the same too.

Smash im sure is partially responsible for at least the first gba game selling well in america.
