I don't want to go all towelie but I recently discovered that I have friends who don't travel with a towel in their trunk at all times.

Be sure to rotate/wash every X months (X depends on how much you can handle an old moldy towel)

I have jumper cables, a towel, some plastic bags, two bottles of water and a first aid kit in my trunk. I also have a multi tool and a knife and a flashlight I keep up front.

I literally never do anything dangerous and have only ever used the jumper cables. I have no need for any of this.

EDIT: I also have a hoodie, old shoes and a change of clothes. I used the socks once I think cuz I spilled something on myself.

guys what if you're caught in a downpour on the way to a date/job thing, what if a prankster puts a bucket of water on a slightly ajar door, what if you're going canoeing with your friend and you guys don't look at the wind speeds and you capsize and have to carry the canoe all the way back to the car. What if you find a dog on the side of the road that you need to pick up but you don't want it to pee on the seats directly? Also if works as a blanket if you have a girl who gets cold too easily in your car.

I've used the jumper cables, towel, plastic bags, my water (coolant leak), and my multitool.

A hat is also super important because you never know when the wind is going to be crazy and wind blowing right into your ear can ruin your entire day (a hoodie works too)

I also like to have reading material ready for if I'm waiting on something for a long time in a place without service.
