Is it a nursing home? Cuz I'm not surprised. I've been in a ton of nursing homes and unless you're paying like $80k a year, the level of care you get is abysmal. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies >_>

Most of them are understaffed, pay minimum wage, and the patient is ALWAYS right. U kniw because i've worked in them. I remember getting into trouble because a resident spit in my face and shoved feces on me. I said i needed a few minutes away to compose myself and my boss told me no and gave me a verbal warning for near abuse(verbal abuse because i raised my voice). Fuck nursing homes.

This is your response to multiple caregivers beating a crying patient?

haloiscoolisbak posted...

Because that's part of the job and expected considering we are talking about mentally ill elders, often severely and whereas a nurse isn't supposed to do that at all.

Part of a job that nobody wants to do, is highly undervalued in terms of pay yet highly neccesary in society.

I chose bad timing to bring this up, but tbh I only ever hear about aged care nurses in the media when they're criticised for fucking up. And not every elderly patient who acts up is completely innocent either fyi

The way to fix the problem is better pay and better patient to staffing ratios in nursing homes btw

These people arent evil, they get into nursing with good intentions. The job is just fucked up and it wears you down. Blame the governments who don't put enough funding into the health system. It really is one of the most important jobs in the word yet they get paid as much as a fast food manager

Things like this have been happening for decades, unfortunately. I've been fortunate enough to be in a place several times over that had more than common courtesy and decency for its human inhabitants - but places like this really do exist, where barbaric shit happens behind the walls that nobody hears or knows about or believes.

Just take a quick glance at Willowbrook State School. Sure, it's pretty common knowledge now, but back then this is what passed for "genuinely reformative care."

I'd also like to state that my best friend currently works with the specially handicapped at his local high school, and he's looked at as a model teacher in spite of all the abuse and mischief he receives on a daily basis. Some of the stories he's told me wouldn't get me to spend a day there - but he genuinely loves the kids he works with and does it because he cares.

EDIT: My point is that it takes a certain kind of person with a certain level of humanity to work positions that will deal with people at their most challenged or most lowest points - I don't believe for a second any one person off the street can do what these people do, and it comes from more than just general training to know how to adequately and appropriately treat them with both the care and decency they absolutely deserve.

Speaking as someone who has worked in all areas of the cna field from hospitals, nursing homes of all types (assisted, rehab, etc), group homes, hospice, and now agency this was pure evil.

No amount of pay or staff support will solve the lack of patience and compassion it takes to be a Healthcare worker as in the video. There will never be an excuse to ever physically purposely harm a patient in any way. Those workers in the video stopped caring at some point if ever did and think it's okay to treat someone the same as they probably would treat their own children. They most likely are the types to solve all their issues with violence.

Abuse does happen in nursing homes, but I've never seen it or heard of it to the extent of multiple workers being in on it and using a belt.

The problem is the pay and support, but it is not in comparison to the types of people in that video. The healthfield is usually understaffed and will legit hire anyone if they are desperate enough. A lot of the time even the director of nursing can't do a thing to help their staff when the administration has seperated themselves.

There's a platform here to talk about the plight of aged care workers. My sister worked with dementia patients for a number of years while struggling with undiagnosed BPD, and it made living with her hell - she went through some shit. You've also got nurses and aged care workers working 12+ hour days, and their position only grows more tumultuous and unsustainable as funding gets cut from hospitals, or as hospitals try to cut their overnight staff to a skeleton crew in order to save money.

I think it's inappropriate to hijack a thread like this to talk about it, though - because by emphasising these issues in relation to this news story, it comes across very heavily as you siding with the sick fucks hitting elderly patients with belts. And I think it goes without saying that this shit isn't fucking okay.
