Was picking up some games with some Christmas money and I grabbed a copy of Yoshi's Woolly World. Now when I shop at Gamestop I won't buy the game if they don't have the actual boxart/a working case cause at that point I might as well buy new off amazon or get it digitally. Anyway I buy the game along with several others and head out to the car, just to find out that they switched the case for a broken one with no box art. Like wtf? Not only do I feel like it's blatant false advertising, but it's just a shitty way to treat your customer base. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that I don't like being and asshole/ it probably being an internal policy that the employees have no control over. I would've take it back and demanded a refund. So instead I'm going to come here and bitch about it.

Also would love to hear other Gamestop stories cause I know it tends to do shit like this pretty consistently

Idk, I think you should've done this anyways. In no way is that being an asshole. If you want a case that's not busted then that's entirely reasonable. I'd be surprised if store policy is "give the customers the broken cases, not the good ones." You deserve to either get a better case or your money back.

Stories?

I once asked a guy at a Gamestop if I could buy a Forza case. He just gave it to me and said to have a good day.

Another time I had shown slight disdain about a sticker mark so without even asking he took me over the the Wii U section and found a nicer case then took the time to pretty that one up.

When I was in another used game shop, they had a section that sold just manuals and cases separately. They also sold full games with and without the original art. I just needed a case/manual to a PS1 game and asked to buy just that and not the game. The guy working there basically told me to shove it. All the shops of that local chain are closed now.

I typically watch to see if theyre swapping the case and if so ask for the one I want. Theyve never had a problem with it.

Yeah, as long as you're polite it's no big deal. It's just business

Demeanor makes a big difference. It's not even like you're complaining about an employee's performance, you're just deciding whether to return a product

Well that's relief I'll probably take it back after dinner. I just tend to not trust gamestop after they've screwed me over with some of their really dumb store policies. I also think I was a little worried mostly because they've probably been busy/getting yelled at all day.

Oh I guess you wanted my 'screw gamestop' story.

One manager of a store called me a liar after I told him that the copy of Golden Sun he sold me would not save and that the battery was dead. He legit almost wanted to fight me over this. I wasn't even complaining or trying for a return because I knew it was past the 2 weeks (I bought it the day I left for a 2 week vacation to Florida lol). I hated that man.

That's less of a gamestop issue and more of a dbag issue though.

Last time I bought used there they did the exact same thing to me. I saw him doing this as he rung me up so I told them I wanted the box I handed to them and the guy actually questioned why I wanted it. So I told him never mind and just left. Bought it new on eBay for like $5 more.

I havent bought games from them at all since. I still go in from time to time because the one by me actually has a really good selection of random trinkets that I like to browse. But yeah I hate the used game aspect of that store.

It's important to know that every gamestop is different

I've shopped at the gamestops in my area for nearly 20 years and have never had a single irreconcilable issue with them and the staff have always been wonderful, to the extent that gamestop hate seems weird to me (aside from general wariness of overall corporate practices which is always warranted)

Yeah they've had some assholes working at mine as well. I remember one guy (I think he was new) was literally mocking my voice when I went in there. Then he followed up by continuously swiping my card in the credit machine so hard it scratched my card up. Thankfully I'm pretty sure the dude was fired shortly after.

Oh, my 'screw gamestop' story is this

When I was a teenager I would buy used games, beat them within the return period (5 or 7 days, I'm not sure) then return them for full price

I do feel bad for anyone that tried to return games for store credit. It's just not a good choice

I will say I had a similar thing happen three to four times before that and no one questioned me when I told them I wanted the original case. But I felt like it was happening almost every time I went in that they were swapping the cases on me and I hated having to police them so I just gave up entirely.

Like I said I still buy new games there from time to time and I really like how they have various swag now in addition to just having games like they did when I was a kid. But I don't buy used from them anymore. I actually try to avoid buying used entirely if I can avoid it these days so I don't have to go professional detective on the box beforehand.

I would imagine if you don't care about the cases that Gamestop is still good for used game selling. But there are other secondhand stores here that are much better about making sure people aren't selling them garbage tier boxes or don't ever try to swap cases on you.

I still for the life of me don't know why brick and mortar gaming stores even exist anymore. Has demoing new hardware really prevented them from going the way of CD and DVD stores?

Oh you know what, I did always get crummy cases when I bought used, but I didn't care at all. It's the game that counts, and cheaper was better

I always assumed whoever traded the games in had lost the case

My GS shops have always been pretty good to me with convenience things like this, and Ive frequented a number of different locations over the years. Nothing even approaching the usual horror stories people like to share; the worst of it really is the occasional need to ask for the nicer case when the cashier tries to swap (and the ones who see me more often dont even try anymore). Some places even give me leftover preorder bonuses (always at least a week after the game is out) for games they know I like but cant buy right away.

My mom tried to buy me Monster Hunter World for Christmas, but she's been real sick so she bought it online when it was on sale. What she didn't know was that doing "Pick up in store" means they only hold it for that day/the price only counts for that day. She went in a few days later when she was feeling better and asked to pick it up/didn't realize the price didn't hold. When she asked if there was a mistake (since it hadn't yet been explained to her), the girl working there got super bitchy about it so my mom just left.

She went back a few days later since she hadn't found it anywhere else and a guy was working. She asked about the policy to better understand it and the guy ended up giving it to her for the sale price she originally tried to get online and was super nice about it.

It really does depend on the employee.

I dont usually buy used games, but there were so many times I would try to buy a new game and was handed an open copy. I always asked why it was open and they told me they open all of them. Eventually I stopped buying games there unless they were exclusive or had some bonus for buying from them. Every one of these times had stickers on the opened cases

Nitpick? Maybe. But if Im buying a new game why is it opened with stickers on it?

So I went back and the guy told me they have to check first because they can't sell me their 'display' copy of the case. Which doesn't make sense because majority of their used games have the gamestop boxes. Either way though they had one for me. I think I just need to stop going to the Gamestop closest to me. There's one slightly further out that has been much more helpful

I bought a set of used 3DS games from Gamestop recently during the buy two get one deal, first time I'd bought used games from them in many years. Two of them didn't even come with cases. They shipped them to me in those paper sleeves that cds/dvds are frequently in. It's the last time I buy a used game from Gamestop if they can't even bother to give me at least a blank case to put the thing in.
