Oh man, okay, thanks. This is wonderful.

Yeah this is the most clever one we've ever had. Anyone know the user who made it? Or was this before submissions?

This was CJayC, during a 3D model round (as opposed to sprite round, which was the next round). I believe seeding determined which character had a homefield advantage in the picture.

WHAT

I'd be hard pressed to make a list of contest results that absolutely shocked me, but I have to believe this one is at least in the top five.

Let's run down the history. L-Block, of course, won it all in 2007. Coming in to the 2008 contest, we were dismayed to learn that it would be another fourway affair. Brackets basically came down to a single match: round 2 with Crono, Ryu, L-Block and Amaterasu. On paper, this was the only chance we had to kill the boot that kicked our ass in 2007. We had two strong characters, a weaker one and L-Block. If you picked L-Block to advance, you had it winning the contest. If you didn't, you had Link.

One problem: in round 1, L-Block faced Ryu, Meta-Knight and the duck hunt dog, pre-Smash 4. Ah, those good old days where we dumped joke characters into every battle to see if anything would stick. L-Block would easily take second here. Except... L not only came in first, but did so by somehow making a big comeback on Ryu at the end of the match. L doesn't do that! It starts out strong and fades like all jokes do. But here it was, rubbing it in our face and beating our one chance we had to get it out of here. It felt insulting. That match would have made this list if this one didn't happen.

L-Block went into that big round 2 match and blasted Ryu. Crono took first but Ryu kinda never had a chance here. The dream was dead.

Meanwhile, Pikachu was winning his matches, but he wasn't a star yet. He beat Arthas and Ike in the first round, but he didn't dominate them. He barely edged out Alucard to take first in his second match. Coming into this match, he was clearly weaker than Ryu - and Alucard was stronger than Amaterasu. L-Block was destined to take first or second here.

Except... somehow, L-Block finally broke. It was Pikachu who started off the match in first. Pikachu gave up second to L-Block for a short while, but L's patented joke pattern came back here. It faded after the first hour and Pikachu coasted to an easy win. People celebrated in the streets. Women cried with joy.

Just.. what? This was the origin of save_us.rat. Pikachu went into the next match with Crono, Samus and Vincent and lost badly. The rat literally died to save the 2008 contest.

This match was gigantic. I'm pretty sure the #1 reason it was gigantic was because of the 1 and the 16 next to each other's name, though. If memory serves, you only got one nomination per console. Halo was literally the only Xbox game of note whereas Starcraft had to deal with the entire history of PC games. It was a bad system. Everything about spring 2004 was a bad idea, really. And it was amazing despite itself.

Make this match an 8-9 and it doesn't have the same level of hype. I still think it's a huge result though, even though no one should really pick Halo to be a huge favourite after watching Master Chief struggle with a dude named Felix. PC games were utter garbage in these contests. Probably the most notable example of a PC character was Gordon Freeman and he was the ultimate laughingstock by the time spring 2004 came around. Starcraft? It was hard to really believe in Starcraft. But it was also hard to see Halo going anywhere. I have no way to verify this, but I bet most people had it losing to Kingdom Hearts in the next round. (speaking of super odd results: Kingdom Hearts/Soul Calibur. I think Janus took Soul Calibur to beat Metal Gear in the series contest based off of that result alone. spring 2004, man. there won't ever be another like it.)

This match was an intense back and forth. Starcraft killed the night and Halo killed the day. Halo got up 1100 votes with 5 and a half hours to go and then Starcraft just went to work. It looked like it was probably going too slow and then, suddenly, it was over. It took like an hour and a half for a 600 vote lead to disappear.

And with that, Starcraft, and possibly the biggest natural bandwagon we've ever seen, was born.

So, youve had ALOT of ones that have no business on this list so far. But Im pretty sure except day 3 Tournament of Champions Snake>Seph, this is the first other one wife CONFIRMED cheating and it has NO Reason to be here because its illegitimate as fuck!

15 minute updates might be better in this current era of low vote totals. Less variance to deal with when you have a larger sample of votes per update.

What happened to GTA? Yes, it's "not a GameFAQS series", but as was just pointed out, Vice City WAS very strong in 2004, and Vercetti, while overrated by casuals was a decent midcarder as well. Even CJ was probably above the fodder line in 2005. Then all of a sudden GTA blows its match to Warcraft in the Series Contest, and it's been all downhill from there. This happened well before the site's votals dropped off, and it's not like it reflects overall trends in the gaming community.

Vote totals actually went up after 2005. The 2005 Character Battle averaged just slightly under 100000 votes per match, but the Series Contest jumped up to almost 122000 votes. When the Series Contest happened, we were also just a few months away from the launch of the Wii, so the traffic to the site was leaning more Nintendo than it normally would have been before 2006.

Let me just drop this match picture in here.

XFMGKeW

Not enough is made of this picture today. It's the entirety of Nintendo against big dorky Tidus. This match had a stigma for years because of it. Was Melee really the stronger game? Probably. But with a dork like Tidus, you never know.

I remember being really unimpressed by both of these games. Melee got less than 54% on Vice City while FFX, and this one baffles me to this very day, couldn't double Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. What the heck is that? FFX went into this one as the slight fave, but it wasn't overwhelming, and certainly not with that picture.

The match itself wasn't really that close outside of the beginning. Melee started out in the lead, FFX grabbed it overnight and Melee blasted FFX in the day. It was basically your typical Cloud/Link, Nintendo/Square affair. FFX got it under 51 by the end of the match but it was never really in doubt by the time the sun came up.

I can't stress the skepticism that this match drew, though. Between that and the complete wildcard that was Starcraft, the next round was completely unpredictable.

I dunno if showing the protagonist of your game in his full 3D rendered glory is pic sabotage, I think that says more about the game itself.

Yeah, if it was the entire cast of FFX vs. the Melee cast, it would look good.

If it was that picture of Tidus and maybe just Mario or even Master Hand, it would be balanced.

If it was a picture of Tidus looking ready for combat against EVERYONE IS HERE, it would look alright.

But he's got all of the Nintendo icons squaring up for a fight, and Tidus is staring right at the camera with a goofy grin on his face in all of his Meg Ryan glory.

The summer 2004 contest was probably the worst contest we could have gotten at that time. I'm not sure you could make a worse bracket if you tried. Every good character was put into an SFF battle and it ended up being super predictable. I think the contest winner had a -1 bracket, and that was Ryu/KOS-MOS of all things.

The exception to this, of course, was Link/Cloud. Cloud had won 2003 and FF7 had won spring 2004 just a couple of months before this one started. In 2003 you had a string of results that showed that Cloud was more than up to the challenge of facing Link. You had Squall/Luigi, you had Seph/Mario, you had Mario/Sonic, etc etc. For this one? It wasn't until the last 3 days that you really had any idea. Link/Mega Man (RIP Heroic Mario) and Cloud/Samus both could have made the list for how they framed the contest, but it was only a day or two before the penultimate battle. Otherwise you spent 2004 trying to compare Link's result vs. CATS to Cloud's vs. Duke Nukem. Cloud faced Squall and Sephiroth while Link got Yoshi and Ganondorf. Who thought this was a good idea? The only other good result was Link beating Crono 63/37 after Crono beat Mario. That was still within the range of 2003 Cloud though, since Seph put 61% on Mario. The problem was, 2004 Cloud wasn't 2003 Cloud, even though he managed to beat Sephiroth by a higher percentage than 03.

But once Link beat Mega Man, it was really on. That was his Cloud/Sonic moment. The general consensus at the time - and maybe now still, I'm not sure - was some combination of the Master Quest collection (came out the year prior), the Twilight Princess trailer and another year away from Kingdom Hearts gave Link what he needed. The picture being adult Link probably also helped. It really could have been Cloud dropping back just as easily as Link pushing ahead. Link/Mega Man isn't exactly a fair fight, after all, as we saw with things like Mega Man/Yoshi.

I don't put this one up super high because of the contest it came from. In reality, it probably belongs in the top 10 but it never felt that way. Link always felt like the favorite to me. He was heavily favored in the Oracle in this match too, despite Cloud/FF7 winning the last two contests. Cloud really needed everything to break his way to get one over on Link and he didn't have that in 04.

This match is great. Majora and FFX is like baby FF7/OOT, which is depressing in its own way but hey that's gamefaqs for ya. We just move down the line to the baby versions when our big dogs aren't there.

Majora put up a similar number on MGS3 that FFX did on RE4, and MGS3/RE4 were pretty much identical in the previous contest, so it makes sense that this was super close. We were eyeing this match ever since Majora pounded Wind Waker and it lived up to the hype. FF7 can't hang with OOT but these two were perfect for each other. It's like CT/LTTP - just a great match between two strong games (by 2000s standards, anyway).

But there's one other thing here. In my opinion, this is the last classic gamefaqs match. By that I mean, it had a high number of votes, it had clearly established trends, it had a 1500ish vote lead comeback, there was an afterschool vote, etc. It had classic FF vs. Zelda trends too. Majora went up early, FFX put up what felt like an untouchable lead and Majora made an incredible comeback in the day. FFX even cut 200 votes in the last 2 hours just like the Knuckles and Maguses of the world used to. It had everything that those old classic matches had.

You stopped getting that after this. (you might have had it in the rivalry rumble, I forget. those matches don't count anyway.) After this, our vote totals dropped by two thirds, and then three fourths, and we started having to come up with artificial ways to keep our vote totals looking okay like double votes for registered users. 2018 was a strong contest with a great bracket but there's no movement and little interest. A contest was going on and you barely even noticed any new people show up on the board. It was a match amongst people aged 25-35 and the results showed with no new characters being good. Except 2B. That's so weird.

Anyway, I say this not to dump on more recent contests as I really did enjoy the 2018 version. It was a great return to form after all the dumb fourways and threeways and gimmick contests. But FFX/Majora is a match that should be celebrated as the last of its kind. It's too bad FFX didn't win for some kind of supposed balance between the good and bad sides of the force, but I kinda like the Majora result more in 2018 than I did in 2010.

For those living under a contest rock, this is the match that "broke the noble nine". Now, we've done that 3 or 4 different times depending on your criteria, but this is the one that people really took to heart.

Crono had a tough time in 2006, struggling the last 20 hours of every match and eventually losing a really bad match to Sonic. Vincent had a different 2006. He beat Ganondorf after a very Nintendo-friendly 2005 and Zelda winning the series contest in 2006. I think, if memory serves, that he also killed two of the ten most notable accounts in board 8 history: Heroic Mario and yoblazer. Vincent was thought to have a shot at Sonic but couldn't quite get there, getting 48%. The thing is, Crono got 49% and was a year older in 2007.

The writing was on the wall for sure. Crono struggled with Zero the round prior while Vincent had a free pass alongside Link. Anyone without blinders on would have picked Vincent based on the two characters' trajectories, but this was the noble nine we were talking about and we would believe Crono to pull it off before we believed some foreign invader.

Crono started this match off strong. After 5 minutes, it was 27%-17%, but Crono would drop 2% after the second update. Crono's 4 hours looked like it would be enough, except 4 hours was more than 2 hours this time. He built up a lead of 1000 votes and then just kinda died. It was honestly sad to watch. He pushed his lead ever so slightly up to 1100 by 4am and then just utterly collapsed as he had been for the last two years. Vincent obliterated him overnight, took the lead at 10am and never looked back. The Noble Nine was dead.

Thinking back on this match, I do wonder if part of his struggle was that Zero and Link were both well-liked SNES characters and Vincent was a little more unique. Crono probably still loses in a 1v1 but it's an interesting thought. I can remember this match's trends being invoked for a solid 5 years afterwards, mostly because red sox is a crazy person who has his PhD in poll 2914ology. This match was super hyped, lived up to it and killed the Noble Nine. It made 2008's surprising upset all the sweeter. Crono/Mario had become Crono/Vincent, which was sad in its own way, but their 3 matchups were all super interesting throughout the latter half of the 2000s.

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Noble Nine that day:
The score stood four to two, with but one round more to play.
And then when Samus fell to Earth, and Sonic in a hole,
A sickly silence fell upon the voters of the poll.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, if only Crono could but get a chance at that--
We'd put up even money, now, with Crono in the match.

But Link preceded Crono, as did also Solid Snake,
And the former was a mute elf and the latter had the shakes;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Crono's getting to the match.

But Link pulled out a fairy, to the wonderment of all,
And Snake, the withered old man, proved he was still cool after all;
And when the dust had lifted, and the board saw what had occurred,
There was Solid safe in round two and Link on his way to the third.

Then from 5,000 posts and more there rose a lusty roar;
It rumbled through the topics, it rattled the whole board;
It shocked the moderators and knocked the lurkers flat,
For Crono, mighty Crono, was advancing to the match.

There was ease in Crono's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Crono's bearing and a smile on Crono's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he gave a cheerful grin,
No stranger on the site could doubt 'twas Crono coming in.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with glee;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he waved for all to see.
Then while the sprite-round match pic was posted on the page,
Defiance gleamed in Crono's eye--his sprite belied his age.

And now the stroke of midnight came beneath the board votes stare,
And Crono stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy swordsman the vote unheeded sped--
"That ain't my style," said Crono. "Strike one," the voters said.

From the stats topic, black with posts, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of To Zanarkand by Dreams Bordering the Shore.
"Kill him! Kill that Vincent!" shouted someone on the board;
And its likely they'd have killed him had not Crono raised his sword.

With a smile of mute charity great Crono's visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the match go on;
He signaled to his fanbase, and on the day vote flew;
But Crono still ignored it, and the voters said, "Strike two."

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Crono and the stats topic was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Crono wouldn't let that vote go by again.

The sneer is gone from Crono's lip, though no one hears his voice;
He sets himself defiantly against the voters choice.
And now the second night vote comes, and now we watch it go,
And now the poll is shattered by the force of Vincent's blow

Oh, somewhere on GameFAQs the sun is shining bright;
Games are playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy on Board 8 - mighty Crono has struck out.

And when, responding to the cheers, he gave a cheerful grin,
No stranger on the site could doubt 'twas Crono coming in.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with glee;

"Kill him! Kill that Vincent!" shouted someone on the board;
And its likely they'd have killed him had not Crono raised his sword.

With a smile of mute charity great Crono's visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the match go on;
He signaled to his fanbase, and on the day vote flew;
But Crono still ignored it, and the voters said, "Strike two."

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Crono and the stats topic was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Crono wouldn't let that vote go by again.

The sneer is gone from Crono's lip, though no one hears his voice;
He sets himself defiantly against the voters choice.
And now the second night vote comes, and now we watch it go,
And now the poll is shattered by the force of Vincent's blow

Oh, somewhere on GameFAQs the sun is shining bright;
Games are playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy on Board 8 - mighty Crono has struck out.

Fuck this just as hard as 11 years ago!!!!

I think, if memory serves, that he also killed two of the ten most notable accounts in board 8 history: Heroic Mario and yoblazer.

Mega Man/Mario Kart killed yoblazer, but Sir Chris killed them both.

The stats topic at the start of the Crono/Vincent 2k7 match is one of my favorite examples of early-match impressions being made to look silly. There were a lot of "Why was this match even debated?" posts. None of us have learned since then!

I mean... we were right. You cant predict vote stuffing...

That said even though that match was bullshit, I was vindicated, as I had said FOR FUCKING EVER that Link 100% SFFd Crono, and that right there proved I was right beyond any shadow of a doubt,

The 2009 games contest pretty much sucked thanks to trying to do fourway games. It just doesn't work. Just look at this final - how are we trying to decide the best game ever in a match between two FF and two Zelda games? That's our fault more than anything because, again, we really only like three series' and vote for those games endlessly. But this is dumb. Also dumb was that it was, again, division by era. Yuck.

But oh, right, Final Fantasy VII lost. The writing was on the wall, but most people went with FF7. The gap between Link and Cloud was growing. Snake beat Cloud in the 2008 contest. Zelda won the series contest. And yet, FF7 was the pick here because we thought FF7 would squish FF10 into the mud whereas we weren't sure about LTTP and OOT. It was a dumb time to try to make brackets because you were accounting for mystery factors that you would never be able to see.

Fortunately, Allen gave us what we really needed to see, and well

Yeah, this was never close. Neither match was close, really. Zelda came out assassinating Final Fantasy, and by the time FF was able to start fighting back a little bit, it was already over. Ocarina was unquestionably our strongest game. It was kind of the last bastion in the eternal battle between Zelda and FF. FF7 was the only thing that could possibly beat Zelda and that was dead now. Zelda had conquered FF in every conceivable way. Its only threat going forward would be a surprise rally, and it sure wouldn't be from Final Fantasy.

I think most people took FFVII because they didn't think FFX would be in the match, and even when it was, they didn't think LTTP would fold as hard as FFX did.

I went and looked. the Crew all picked FF7 except for Kleenex. I think I had FFX and still picked FF7. I would have won money if FF7 won too. oh well.

People picked FFVII because we wanted something not from Zelda to win, and this was the last hope.

MWC, I'd like to hear how Starcraft could have caused Zelda to lose the other 3 divisions.
