Maybe I'm overestimating DroneFaqs but I'm pretty sure no one could challenge Link without rallies.
Batman would be 40-60ed by Link too.

Back in the mid-2000s, I would have confidently taken Batman over Link. Batman has more fanboys than any character ever.

Now though all the casuals are gone, and this site is super hardcore gamers with massive nostalgia goggles. I have a lot less confidence in Batman now.

Id pick Batman, Vader and maybe Spider-Man to be the strongest.

I mean, do you seriously think Sonic can beat Spider-Man or Darth Vader? I think theyd beat him easily.

Anyone could beat Link with rallies, even a guy that get 10% on Amateratsu.
So obviously Batman could rally past Link, but at this point, we get back into takeover territory (which get easier and easier, maybe in 5 years, the hentai rallies will switch 60/40 matches instead of 51/49).

I think GoT would be pretty bad because I'm not expecting Gamefaqs to care for new series, just like they don't care about new games.

Spiderman would probably be strong but I'm not seeing him ever beat someone like Mario.

So I think this would shape up the midrank ,but the top 5 would be unaffected, which would be pretty disappointing.

I still think it's funny that a neutral wouldn't hold Nintendo in high regard, they are by far the largest company in gaming. It would be like wondering why Disney does so well in a movies contest.

Well there is a certain divide between the "mainstream" gaming and the "hardcore" gaming.

A lot of people who play games like Nintendo and Pokemon, but if you are a true gamer, you are supposed to enjoy AAA shooters in your Xbox, not play games for the filthy casuals.

It's like the general mainstream isn't the same as the hardcore, industry mainstream.

"By far the largest" is very debatable. The way that largest company of any description is figured out is usually by revenue, and in that respect Nintendo is nowhere close to someone like Activision Blizzard or Sony.

"By far the largest" is very debatable. The way that largest company of any description is figured out is usually by revenue, and in that respect Nintendo is nowhere close to someone like Activision Blizzard or Sony.

Nintendo is still larger than Activision Blizzard by revenue while Sony has more than just gaming, it would be like arguing that Microsoft is the largest company.

We did have a company cap on characters for the first few contests. It resulted in a lot of strong characters being snubbed.

My biggest question for an all-fictional characters contest is the % Samus would get against John McClane if she had an Other M pic.

Sure i don't play every genre, but i still know who the "main" characters are from the games that don't interest me. Just do it once. I don't foresee Link having any difficulty seeing off Batman, Wolverine, Goku & co. but it'd be fun to see. Aerith v Yoda I'd definitely check in to see how that's going down.

I've never really felt that excited about a fictional character contest. I'm just not that excited about Link vs. Batman. Not really sure why, probably because I can't see myself getting emotionally invested in the non-gaming characters. And I'm only emotionally invested in the gaming characters because of the contest history.

Back when we were clearing 100k votes per day, this site had a lot of cachet as a place with stable character strengths and high votals. These contests used to be very hard to influence - Bidoof had a rally that brought in probably somewhere around 3000 votes - enough to swing a 55-45 match nowadays - and all it got him was going 50/50 with Vincent for one hour before getting doubled, in a 4-way where Link took up more than half the total votes.

I don't know, maybe what I'm really saying is the only way to generate more excitement for these contests is to have the votals somehow go back up.

@red_sox_777 It will never happen. As Ulti said in his analysis when people tried to rally for characters in this contest most people there said Gamefaqs still exist? And it makes sense. So we can go only down from here on.

My favorite part of adding comic/movie characters will be when Mario ekes by Spider-man and Samus 60/40s Vader, and everyone's all like "THIS IS THE YEAR SHE DOES IT" and then Mario beats her again by like 50 votes.

But seriously, I totally understand why adding non-game characters makes sense. I think it would be fun but I also think we're guaranteed to get another Draven/Undertale situation where something like Jar Jar Binks gets joke rallied and "ruins" the contest. At some point though it just is what it is.

If you want to keep it just to video game characters then something needs to be done to spice it up. ...I'm just at a loss for what that would be.

I'm intrigued by the concept of all-fictional characters, but only in relation to each other. I don't really have any interest in seeing them go up against our usual crew though, except maybe as a bonus match at the end. I know that's not really the popular consensus, but *shrug.*

I see some aggressive posting about this all-fictional idea and really my dissent comes down to not caring about other mediums like I do video games and that's why I'm here instead of IMDB's forums.

My opinion is GameFAQs has such a cool idea with these contests and we don't see other sites we care about pursue similar contests that match the themes of comic book characters, show characters, book characters, etc. Because of that, those of you who care more about those mediums are interested in seeing them in action and see GameFAQs as the gateway to that. Just a theory.

And that does sound cool -- elsewhere! It'd be cool to see that somewhere else because I totally get Vader and Cartman have fans. I come here for my interest in video games though, and adding non-gaming stuff flatly dillutes my interest (in a way that is different from Board 8 because we built our relationships together over the years of these contests and we have a human element these entrants don't).

Please understand why that is less interesting from this perspective. All for a bonus poll, but don't make a GameFAQs contest about something other than games.

(and yes, nearly any fictional character worth a damn has a game now -- that seems besides the point and is sometimes a testament of how businesses use well-known properties to make a quick buck off our medium)

Batman would struggle to get 45% on Alucard. The only people here anymore are those that really care about video games, many of them more than other media. Batman or Darth Vader won't do shit. Goku's the only one I could see threaten the lower Noble Nine-tier characters, and possibly even the highest non-Link tier if he gets a bandwagon going.

But we really don't need fictional characters since we just had a damn contest that was exciting and unpredictable and wasn't majorly affected by rallies. Next contest still has a lot of unanswered questions, and if we do another Games contest or GotD before then things could still change dramatically.

e: Plus they'd be bigger rally targets, and we all know how much this board loves rallies.

Its not surprising at all considering its a rematch so soon after the first one, but I was hoping to see Link hit over 60% here again! Everyones talking up Zelda and Cloud, but lets consider that Link has no actual competition at all in these contests anymore. The closest person can just barely skim by 40%. Thats wild.

And theres no way in hell Goku is stronger than the likes of Batman and Darth Vader.

Also your definition of dramatic change seems awfully loose. Zelda boosting is the most dramatic change we saw, and in absolute terms its really not a huge shift.
