Even if you excluded Square, I still think you could probably get over 10 all-time Classic RPGs out of the 5th Generation (and contemporary PC)

I think Golden Age can refer to a time of not only quality but also quantity.

Platformers were THE in-genre of the late 80s to mid 90s. Lots of bad ones, but also lots of decent to good ones that people still don't really remember too much.

First it was arcade games, then platformers, then Halo turned it into FPSes, and it's been FPSes since, huh?

A personal favorite of mine that I don't think I've ever known anyone else to have played: Tonic Trouble. Ubisoft 3D platformer, same era as Rayman 2: The Great Escape (which is an undeniable classic itself). The main character, a purple alien named Ed, even lacked limbs in the same way that Rayman did. It wasn't the most groundbreaking game out there, but I had a lot of fun with it.

I found out about it by happening to pick up some gaming magazine one day in which there was an ad for three games on one page: Rayman 2, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, and Tonic Trouble. My brother had Rayman 2, and for some reason Tonic Trouble stood out to me from that page, so I asked for it for my next birthday.

Still haven't played Rocket: Robot on Wheels, but it is in my backlog. And I understand it is also supposed to have been really good.

It's weird how there are so few remotely prominent old school 2D platformers besides the three series this topic was about where you actually want to jump on/into enemies. There's DuckTales and SNES Aladdin and...I'm not sure I can think of any others.

Haven't played Earthworm Jim but I generally see that described as a run-and-gun. Can also jump on enemies to kill them?

Been awhile since I've played Rayman and I never got too far but I recall mainly fighting enemies with the fist. Could you also jump on them?

I don't think jumping on enemies is a requirement of platformers. It's more about timing jumps and stuff.

So guys, remind me about Super Mario 64... I recall that it's somewhat nonlinear. I haven't played it in forever, but you have to collect stars to open new worlds right? But there are multiple stars per level? Am I remembering correctly?

7 stars per level except for boss stages and a few special levels.

But none of the levels except boss stages are linear

Yeah progression in the overworld areas is locked behind doors that need a certain number of stars to open

Edit: you do not need 100% to beat the game

It's not the ending that alters really, you just get access to a small, previously inaccessible area and a delightful cameo.

SM64 is literally my favorite game of all time. I recommend it, even if you're not playing it for a series like in this topic.

Of course I haven't played it in several years, now. If memory serves, you only need about 60 of the 120 stars in the game to beat it.

Hm. Well I guess this topic has sort of turned into a gaming blog, so here's where I'm at:

-I am being coaxed into playing Dishonored because it's my brother in law's favorite game and he gave me his old 360 that I've yet to touch, so I felt compelled to give it a shot. I played an hour of it and I am struggling mightily with not murdering everyone because stealth + first-person POV is an impossible combination for me

-I have a hankering to play some Mario 64, but I need to either beat Dishonored or suck enough where I legitimately can't enjoy it anymore

-I kind of want to play Sonic Spinball with an infinite lives game genie code. I liked the game as a kid, and the art style is awesome, but I know it's absurdly cheap and difficult. But infinite lives isn't REALLY cheating right?!

Does that mean you're going to start SM64?

Mostly for my own amusement, I compiled a list of my top 50 stars from the game and made brief writeups for them several years ago...I don't know if I still have the writeups, but I do have the ranking. I may toss those out in the interest of discussion as you come across them if you're going to play that game next.

I'll also post my ranking of the worlds in the game, because why not:

1.Rainbow Ride
2.Tick Tock Clock
3.Shifting Sand Land
4.Lethal Lava Land
5.Big Boo's Haunt
6.Tall, Tall Mountain
7.Whomp's Fortress
8.Wet-Dry World
9.Bob-omb Battlefield
10.Jolly Roger Bay
11.Cool, Cool Mountain
12.Hazy Maze Cave
13.Tiny-Huge Island
14.Dire, Dire Docks
15.Snowman's Land

Keep in mind that there's no such thing as a bad world in this game, as far as I'm concerned.

Well I went back and beat the last level of Sonic Spinball finally.

Honestly, if this game wasn't so impossibly difficult (I beat it with infinite lives and went through about 50 in the last level alone--default is THREE), it would be a pretty enjoyable random spinoff. And if there were like 2-3 more levels (with the reduced difficulty), this would be a better game than Sonic 2.

However, the difficulty is NOT something that can be changed, so this was one of the most frustrating games I've ever played all the way through. It is like Battletoads-level infuriating.

The first three levels are actually really enjoyable once you figure out the paths of least resistance (ie, the ones that involve the least randomness).

That final level absolutely tarnishes the game though.
