Why does this happen? The content is the same... the context is the same... so why does this happen?

Probably because video games are so disjointed. You control part of it and have no control over other parts of it. Very hard to be engaged in something that keeps changing your "role" so to speak.

Lots of games. I cry a lot. From all sorts of things. Games, books, movies, tv shows, even certain ads... And those animated shorts are like made for crying...

Fallout 76 made me cry for buying it at full price.

While I did not cry, Abzu did make me feel stuff.

The only game that really made me feel things was Dragon Age 2 because the death of Hawke's mother had reminded my of having lost my own mother the year or so before so that was still a touchy subject to me and had me crying after having kept it together for so long.

Seeing a tornado in Just Cause 4 for the first time last night was pretty fucking hype. Got me all excited and shit.
Playing Spyro Reignited made me all nostalgic and tingly.

Games elicit emotional responses from me all the time...it's just rare that it's a negative emotion.

Hellblade

aside from being just a phenomenally well written game i have a sister with schizophrenia who often dealt with terrifying bouts of psychosis when I was younger

its been a long time since a game had that sort of impact on me. come to think of it, none come to mind. maybe lost odyssey but that game was more just sad. Hellblade had actual depth to it.

games are mathematical systems that we enjoy fiddling with. the story, if there is one, is optional/tertiary. it's like asking if a construction set or a card game makes you cry.

I just beat Final Fantasy XV a couple days ago. That game hit me right in the feels.

That was probably the last game for me that wasn't a replay of something I had already beat before. Like I didn't cry but I felt a little something after I just beat Castlevania sotn again and got the ending where Alucard basically implied he's gonna go kill himself because he doesn't feel he belongs in the world and Maria is all not a damn thing I can do to help him maybe I'll see him again one day like she is just oblivious to what he just implied and even stated they'd never meet again

Kingdom Hearts. Most Recently though RDR 2. Mostly when you hunt a animal and don't hit it right it'll stumble and lay on the floor breathing heavily. You can perform a mercy kill or let it bleed out. Both are sad.

Probably Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon.

That ending. That sucked. Even though you know its going to work out because its a mystery dungeon game, it still really sucked. I feel sad thinking about it.

Constantly, those are my favorite games.
Latest one was probably Dragon Quest XI, only a few months ago.
Vesperia is going to be a massive feels train in a couple of months.
Ace Combat 7 too.

At the end of the world tournament, when Ryu just went looking for the next challenge, I choked up.

Persona 4 over 5 years ago. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

That one had me sad just watching the trailer and hearing the basic premise of the game.

Lost Odyssey hit me in the feels constantly. Those damn stories from kain's past. I found every single one.

Honestly I gotta say FF15.
For the most part the game its self was average. But in the rare times when it hit the right notes, it hit ALL the right notes.
