Starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting macOS versions 10.7 ("Lion"), 10.8 ("Mountain Lion"), 10.9 ("Mavericks") and 10.10 ("Yosemite"). This means that after that date the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of macOS. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of macOS.

The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of macOS. In addition, future versions of Steam will require macOS feature and security updates only present in macOS 10.11 ("El Capitan") and above.

For the remainder of 2018 Steam will continue to run and to launch games on these versions, but other functionality in Steam will be somewhat limited. For example, new features such as the new Steam Chat will not be available. We encourage all users on these operating systems to upgrade to newer versions of macOS in order to have ongoing access to the latest features of Steam, and to ensure future access to all games and other Steam content.

Users of macOS versions 10.7 ("Lion") through 10.10 ("Yosemite") can find more information on upgrading macOS here.

Shame about the new chat, it is terrible. Bloated and ugly. Wish I could set it for classic style (text only, no embedding, neither of which were options last I checked), but Valve are more focused on fixing broken microtransaction systems than allowing users to disable image embedding in chats.

There's no time limit here, they're going to get to keep their games either way. You made it sound like Valva was going to delete their account if they didn't update their OS. (El Capitan and above are pretty terrible though in my experience.)

There's never an ok excuse to force people to upgrade software. But you already know you shouldn't be using Steam if you value your system so whatever.

Sure there is. You can't expect developers to support obsolete versions indefinitely.

Wait, you mean I shouldn't expect Chrome to work in Windows 3.1?

Yeah, but there's a catch: there's no reason to make something stop working tomorrow just because the system is obsolete when it was working just fine yesterday. If people don't update, Can they still play their games, even if offline?

Microsoft did it to us to play there games about 2 years ago. you can play them but they would be glitch, freeze, crash or couldn't run in full screen mode unless you upgraded to windows 10. I remember issues with Rise of the Tomb Raider, Horizon 3, and Quantum Break.

You sure, I am not on Windows 10 and have not yet played a PC game that did not run smoothly on high settings on this PC.

that is super not how development works. there's no switch that get flipped, there comes a time that supporting an older version requires too many resources that could be devoted to making stable versions better. old systems may simply not support new features at all, so there's no longer a consistent product and you're essentially developing a separate product for an edge case that doesn't justify it. developers usually inform customers ahead of time that their stuff might break if they don't upgrade as a courtesy but there's no obligation

That depends. There are programs out there that don't suport older systems, but you can keep using an older version to a certain extent that does support it. In Steam's case, I don't see why playing the games already installed on your machine would require you to update the client, thus forcing you to update the whole system.

When it comes at the cost of losing online access or any games you paid for, yes. We just had a topic about BC. No, instead the Steam virus needs to exploit new bugs and spread so they demand you get another OS when the others probably work fine.

@DPsx7 While discontinuing support sucks, and I think they should release a Classic version for older operating systems with just basic Library support, the discontinued operating systems are old. For example, they are also discontinuing XP support, which isn't even supported by Microsoft for the last several years. I don't know beans about the Apple operating systems, but if they are as old as XP, it isn't a massive surprise.

I don't care for Apple so I dunno how it compares. I guess the point here is we understand that at some point you need to get new hardware for new games. However there should never be a case where a company goes 'we're making a change and if you don't follow, then F you and your content'.

Honestly it's a huge reason I always buy discs. I have no trust in companies to keep my best interests in mind.

The thread title reads as if Mac does not count as a personal computer since it says switch to PC instead of switch to a more recent PC. It is highly likely that the OP is using the standard colloquial reference to the Windows platform when referring to PC as not being a Mac.
