The Noble Nine against non-Noble Niners in full-day-format one-on-one matches with registered users getting double-votes *SO FAR*:

Sephiroth - 4-0
Link - 1-0
Cloud - 1-0
Crono - 1-0
Mega Man - 0-1
Sonic - n/a
Samus - n/a
Solid Snake - n/a
Mario - n/a

In 2018: 7-1

CURRENT RECORD: 7-1 (87.5%)

Just reposting this to keep us posted on where we're at now officially.

One hour into today's new matches, Sonic and Zelda (?!) are leading. If these maintain, these will become:

***Sonic's forty-second win and third time he's avenged himself against an outsider who defeated him before (second time he's avenged himself against Auron specifically after upsetting him in 2008).

***Snake's fifth loss, making him the Noble Niner with the most losses.

***Zelda's first time breaking the Noble Nine.

Noble Nine wins 100% of the time.

I'm kidding of course. They lose 100% of the time too.

I'll work on this.

By request, here's the beginning of how the Noble Nine looked against themselves:

The Noble Nine against themselves in full-day one-on-one matches with regular vote counts:

Link - 23-1

In 2002: 2-0
In 2003: 1-1
In 2004: 3-0
In 2005's full contest: 2-0
In 2006: 15-0

Cloud - 15-8

In 2002: 0-1
In 2003: 3-0
In 2004: 2-1
In 2005's full contest: 0-1
In 2006: 10-5

Sephiroth - 10-11

In 2002: 2-1
In 2003: 2-1
In 2004: 0-1
In 2005's full contest: 1-1
In 2006: 5-7

Mario - 7-12

In 2002: 2-1
In 2003: 1-1
In 2004: 0-1
In 2005's full contest: 3-1
In 2006: 1-8

Solid Snake - 6-15

In 2002: 0-1
In 2003: 0-1
In 2004: 0-1
In 2005's full contest: 0-1
In 2006: 6-11

Samus - 3-9

In 2002: 1-1
In 2003: 0-1
In 2004: 1-1
In 2005's full contest: 0-1
In 2006: 1-5

Crono - 3-5

In 2002: 1-1
In 2003: 0-1
In 2004: 1-1
In 2005's full contest: 1-1
In 2006: 0-1

Mega Man - 3-5

In 2002: 0-1
In 2003: 1-1
In 2004: 1-1
In 2005's full contest: 1-1
In 2006: 0-1

Sonic - 1-5

In 2002: 0-1
In 2003: 0-1
In 2004: 0-1
In 2005's full contest: 0-1
In 2006: 1-1

2006's Battle Royale makes several of their numbers look funky, but you can get the general gist here. Outside of Mario > Cloud and Link > Cloud > Solid Snake > Sephiroth, Clinkeroth was untouchable and beat down the rest of the field. It was so bad in fact, only Link and Cloud kept above 50% in their matches against fellow Noble Niners.

Solid Snake and Sonic each had no wins at all until 2006. When Snake beat Mega Man and Sonic beat Crono though, they finally sealed the deal on why they were considered in the Noble Nine for years before. They might have been at the bottom of the Noble Nine and often been at risk of losing to outsiders, but now they finally had definitive internal victories to earn their place within the Noble Nine. Without this, they could have been possibly dropped on their first loss to an outsider (which they both lost to L-Block in 2007, so they got their wins just in time).

I like how Snake's rise from bottom of the barrel to top possible #2 (though he's not there anymore) means he's both lost to and beaten 7 of the other 8 before. Only Link had never lost to Snake and only Sonic has never beaten him.

Also, Mario-Sonic, the match we've all been clambering for, is one of only two that we've never seen.

Yeah, I just smashed all the head-to-heads together.

It should be noted, however, that the final three rounds of 2010 were 24-hour matches as well. So that's 3-0 for Link, 2-1 for Cloud, 1-1 for Snake, and 0-1 for Sephiroth, Sonic, Mario, and Samus. (Mega Man and Crono had already been eliminated by then, the former by Mario; Mario was 0-1 rather than 1-1 because his quarterfinal opponent wasn't from the NN.)

Link, Cloud, and Solid Snake were the only three to come away with winning records within their own ranks. Meanwhile, Sonic and Mega Man came away with no victories from within.and actually lost to outsiders more often than they beat fellow Noble Niners.

I've also been doing a similar N9 research, but among outsiders, who has faced the most people of this illustrious group.

Ryu: All but Link and Mario (Samus 02, Snake 03, Sonic 04, MM 06\07, Cloud 07\10, Samus 07, Crono 08, Seph 18)
Zero: All but Cloud, Seph and Samus (Sonic 03, MM 04\08\13, Mario 05, Link\Crono 07, Snake 08)
Ganondorf: All but Cloud, Crono and Snake (Link 04\18, Seph Sp05, Samus 05\08, Sonic 10, Mario 13, MM 18)
L-Block: All but Mario, Seph and MM (Snake\Sonic\Link\Cloud 07, Crono 08, Samus 13)
Vincent Valentine: All but Cloud, Snake and MM (Crono 05\07\08, Sonic 06, Seph 07\10, Link\Mario 07, Samus 08)

Bowser: 5 (Cloud 03, Mario 04, Seph Sp05, Crono 06\18, Sonic 13)

Zelda: 5 (MM 03, Snake 05\18, Samus 06\10, Link 07, Mario 08), going on 6?
Knuckles: 5 (Snake 02\03\04, MM 07, Mario 08, Sonic 10)
Jill: 5 (Link 02, Cloud 07, Seph 08, Samus 10, MM 13)
Fox: 5 (Cloud 02, Link 03, Seph\Mario 07, Snake 10)

Okay, so since I've been measuring these by contest more specifically than each individual match's format, I hope this is better for covering my angle. Thank you for the critique of my wording as well as the other people stepping in with the research better covering how each match fit which format.

So now.....

The Noble Nine against themselves in 2010s contest (generally defined by its half-day one-on-one matches and regular vote counts -- also includes a few full-day matches late in the contest):

In 2010:

Link - 3-0
Cloud - 2-1
Snake - 1-1
Mario - 1-1
Sephiroth - 0-1
Sonic - 0-1
Mega Man - 0-1
Samus - 0-1
Crono - 0-0

Solid Snake finally gets his fair win over Sephiroth after stealing one from him in the 2006 Battle Royale. Crono was the only one who didn't face a Noble Niner this contest due to Missingno, which is the only thing more embarrassing than losing to every Noble Niner.

The Noble Nine against themselves in 2013s contest (generally defined by its three-way matches):

Solid Snake - 1-0
Samus - 1-1
Mega Man - 0-1
Sephiroth - 0-0
Cloud - 0-0
Sonic - 0-0
Link - 0-0
Mario - 0-0
Crono - 0-0

This year was not about the inner workings of the Noble Nine -- this contest was originally about honoring them when they were all given 1-seeds, but later we saw this was really about the assault thrown upon them all.

The only relevant matches here are Samus > Mega Man > Red and Draven > Solid Snake > Samus. Outside or Snake/Samus/Mega, the only other Noble Niner to even escape their division was Sephiroth, but he was up against two jacked-up rallies from Draven and Mewtwo so he never got to face Link or Sonic like many of us once predicted.

As for today's update on this year's contest.....

The Noble Nine against outsiders in 2018s contest (generally defined by full-day-format one-on-one matches with multiple polls per day and registered users getting double-votes + some days with only one poll per day) *INCOMPLETE*:

Sephiroth - 4-0
Link - 1-0
Sonic - 1-0
Samus - 1-0
Cloud - 1-0
Crono - 1-0
Solid Snake - 0-1
Mega Man - 0-1
Mario - n/a

In 2018 so far: 9-2

CURRENT RECORD so far: 9-2 (81.82%)

Zelda joins the club of Noble Nine breakers. Ouch! I expected her to beat Sonic, but beating Snake shocked me and I never took the idea seriously. Wow.

Meanwhile, Sonic has successfully clapped back against Auron twice since Auron first beat Sonic in 2008.

Barring pro-porn-but-anti-Nintendo rallies, Samus chalks up another win against Tifa.

The Noble Nine against themselves in 2018s contest (generally defined by full-day-format one-on-one matches with multiple polls per day and registered users getting double-votes + some days with only one poll per day) *INCOMPLETE*:

...Maybe. Let's put it this way: I looked for alternative answers, and one of the strongest ones I could come up with has directly lost to Yuna before (Chun-Li, in 2006). The only one I could give as a viable alternative is The Boss.

She is not, however, the character with the most contest appearances to have never faced a Noble Niner. Her 7 appearances rank second on that list, trailing Tails who has been in 8 contests. This feat is made even more impressive by the fact that the two contests he was absent from were both contests in which part of the Noble Nine was removed from the main bracket!

He has faced nearly every notable midcarder, though. In fact, looking through all of his matches, he's hardly ever faced fodder, not even in fourways! Actually, you go back and look at the percentages in his early matches and he legitimately does look like he might've been a midcarder all along. He broke 45% on Alucard in 2002 and was up at 42.6% on Dante in 2004. Honestly, I'd consider 2010 and 2013 his two worst contests, which makes it all the more impressive that he finally broke through to Round 3 this year!

Jecht's only been in one character battle though, too. Unless you want to count Rivalry Rumble, but that muddies the waters because Cloud and Sephiroth were the only Noble Niners paired with each other.

I forgot to note about Solid Snake's loss yesterday: he was outvoted in the raw vote count as well, meaning he is the first Noble Niner to truly be outvoted by individuals against an outsider in a full-day one-on-one match.

Only excuses left for the Noble Nine include:

1) Solid Snake was not eliminated, so it doesn't count (though we have seen this done in four-ways before, we have not for one-on-one matches).

2) We are in a format with multiple matches at a time and that changes how voters vote (weak excuse that might still be broken later this contest too).

The excuses for purity keep dwindling.

The Noble Niners who lost twice in a row:

What's worse for a Noble Niner than losing to an outsider? Doing so twice in a row in back-to-back matches.

Solid Snake is the only character so far to fit this description. He lost to L-Block twice in a row, and then Snake lost to the block a third time in a row -- all in the same contest.

We may see this happen with Mega Man soon too, having lost to Pikachu and then possibly Ganondorf.

Meanwhile, while this is slightly different, Sephiroth is the only character to lose to two outsiders at the same time -- Draven and Mewtwo ganged up on him in 2013.

Can you post their highest percentage victories and their highest percentage losses ever? If adjusting stats based on 4-ways is hard, have the 1-1 only then.

If you can wait a few days for me, I can do it. Alternatively, I encourage someone else to pick up this mantle before then -- the next few days are busier for me and I'll probably just be updating this contest's records doing that time.

Also, thank you for the compliments and shout-outs everyone. Be sure to take note it isn't just me compiling these. I'm glad to see how much we still care about this group of nine characters -- not even like each individual character, but the group itself.

Update: Mega Man avoids this club, leaving it just to Snake and Sephiroth for the moment.

In addition, I should note Snake has lost twice in a row when you reach across contests -- he lost to Draven in 2013 before then losing to Zelda in 2018.

And now Snake may be on the verge of losing a third time in a row AGAIN if his pic sabotage against Auron is bad enough.

As for today's update:

The Noble Nine against outsiders in 2018s contest (generally defined by full-day-format one-on-one matches with multiple polls per day and registered users getting double-votes + some days with only one poll per day) *INCOMPLETE*:

Sephiroth - 4-0
Link - 1-0
Sonic - 1-0
Samus - 1-0
Cloud - 1-0
Crono - 1-0
Solid Snake - 0-1
Mega Man - 1-1
Mario - n/a

In 2018 so far: 10-2

CURRENT RECORD so far: 10-2 (83.33%)

A match that cooooouuuuuld have been scary for Mega Man was suddenly neutered by the return of the scariest two words since "Reddit rally" and "Tumblr rally:" sprite round.

If I'm following this bracket right, this means after Link chalks up a win against Pikachu then Mega Man will get his rematch to redeem himself against Pikachu.

Oops! The LoZ boost is not that strong, it seems.

And regarding most encounters with the N9, some updates (how the hell did I forget Snake > Bowser?):

Bowser: All but Link and Samus (Cloud 03, Mario 04, Seph Sp05, Snake 05, Crono 06/18, Sonic 13, MM 18)
Zelda: All but Cloud, Sephiroth and Crono (MM 03, Snake 05/18, Samus 06/10, Link 07, Mario 08, Sonic 18)
Auron: 5 (Cloud 03\07, Seph 04\08, Crono 06 Sonic 08\18, Snake 18)
Knuckles: 5 (Snake 02/03/04, MM 07, Mario 08, Sonic 10, Samus 13)

Tonight, on Noble Watch:

The Noble Nine against outsiders in 2018s contest (generally defined by full-day-format one-on-one matches with multiple polls per day and registered users getting double-votes + some days with only one poll per day) *INCOMPLETE*:

Link - 1-0
Sonic - 1-0
Samus - 1-0
Cloud - 1-0
Crono - 1-0
Sephiroth - 4-1
Solid Snake - 1-1
Mega Man - 1-1
Mario - n/a

In 2018 so far: 11-3

CURRENT RECORD so far: 11-3 (78.57%)

Solid Snake shakes off the idea of losing twice to outsiders in a row. Meanwhile, Sephiroth's four padded wins earlier in the bracket don't mean diddly against Tifa.

Sephiroth's loss is interesting considering this is basically a change in a game's hierarchy. The only other Noble Nine losses we could maaaaaybe say are like this are Mewtwo over Sonic, Pikachu over Mega Man, and Zelda over Solid Snake if you want to go the Smash-route of this angle...but really, I don't consider this the same situation.

Congrats to Tifa for finishing what she started in 2006.

It's nice to see a character I really like break the Noble Nine for a change.

Yep. Only excuse left standing is that no Noble Niner this contest has been eliminated and lost the raw vote total count on a day where there is only one match to vote on. All else of any level of reason I'm aware of is gone, and that excuse is wavering in the wind.

Which matches are we expecting to be one match only on their day, besides the final day? There are a few others, but the schedule confused me when I last saw it.

As far as the winner's bracket goes, Pikachu loses to Link tomorrow and Zelda would have to "upset" Sonic and actually-upset Mario to see either outsider in a semi-final match.

Loser's bracket is more likely, but again, it looks tough to even get the shot. Pikachu would have to win his rematch against Mega Man and then win his rematch with Crono (this time without Magus) for his chance to face Cloud on a one-match day. Zelda's path to a one-match day is more fluid and versatile, but the long and the short of it is that she's likely facing Mario or rematching against Solid Snake on such a day.

I think I'm looking at this right anyway.

I think it's okay to call these matches today:

The Noble Nine against outsiders in 2018s contest (generally defined by full-day-format one-on-one matches with multiple polls per day and registered users getting double-votes + some days with only one poll per day) *INCOMPLETE*:

Link - 2-0
Sonic - 1-0
Samus - 1-0
Cloud - 1-0
Crono - 1-0
Sephiroth - 4-1
Solid Snake - 1-1
Mega Man - 1-1
Mario - n/a

In 2018 so far: 12-3

CURRENT RECORD so far: 12-3 (80%)

Link slays. This is likely Link's last match against an outsider this contest. The only ways he has another match against an outsider this year is if Zelda beats Mario in the winner's bracket or if Zelda/Pikachu/Tifa run the gambit in the loser's bracket.

Or, you know, maybe there's a fun bonus match.
