This is being discussed on the Stats thread right now and a lot of people (myself included) are making assumptions about the board opinion, so I'm curious. What do you think of them?

Mix between 2 and 3. I'm not sure something on the scale of Draven/UT can happen without the trolling though - unless it's something everyone gets, like L-Block. Anything even somewhat esoteric is going to render 2 irrelevant.

This pretty much

Trolling the boards is generally a primary ingredient to get a major rally going sooo...

I think how people feel rallies correlates with how people feel about the current Nintendo domination.

I've noticed that Nintendo fans, who are more tolerant of Nintendo always doing well, are more against rallies. Meanwhile, non-Nintendo fans, including Square fans who are upset at Square's recent decline, are more tolerant to rallies.

Just a broad generalization that I've noticed and of course certainly doesn't apply to all.

If you agree stealing $100,000 is wrong but then think stealing $1 is right, yes that would make you a hypocrite. If you think both are wrong, but just one is worse than the other, its the same as agreeing all rallys are bad but the larger ones are worse.

I like rallies if they provide close matches and drama/excitement. Draven was cool because Link/Draven/Shep was just an amazing popcorn match all round. Undertale was boring though - the board felt beaten and resigned and it was just depressing.

This seems an odd conclusion, since rallies almost always screw Square characters, outside Frog, Vivi and now Tifa.

Whereas they seem to benefit Nintendo characters and Pokmonz more often than not. Because those things are easy to rally for. Theres plenty of Nintendo fans on the internet, while this place is probably the biggest community of Square fans around.

Draven and Undertale do take away what likely would have been Nintendo wins (though maybe Chrono Trigger couldve won with no rallies at all), but generally rallies are pro-Nintendo and anti-Square.

For some reason people always conflate rallies with counter-rallies.

X rallied first. Its like X stole $1, then Tifa stole a similar amount (may even have been less).

Also its a question of *entertainment*.

Does the rally make the match a blowout, or a back and forth nail biter?

Is the rally a foregone conclusion, where even if its a close match, you just know one entrant has an absolute clutch edge? Or is it a mystery who will win?

These are important things to consider.

I dislike Draven fans coming here to vote for Draven and Draven alone so Draven wins all his matches by landslide. That might be memorable but it's not really interesting as people are dressing it up as.

Rallies in this contest, which brings voters to the other matches that day as well, creating a bigger voter pool then the miniscule we usually deal nowadays, I'm less pent up about.

Sure Nintendo might have an easier time rallying than Square, but they also have a lot more to lose. Nintendo's already dominating the bracket anyways without rallies, so the upside for Nintendo rallying is rather limited. Link's 99% winning this thing without rallies, so why would Zelda fans want any rallies at all? With rallies, you get results like Draven > Link.

Meanwhile, for people who dislike how dominant Nintendo has been, they might as well roll the dice with rallying, since their favorite characters are going to lose anyways.

Again, this is just a observation I had based on rather limited evidence and I certainly don't think this applies to everyone.

Do you mean just this contest, or historically?

Historically Nintendo fans have had a lot less fear of rallies than Square fans. Rallies trigger a fear response in Square fans, as they rarely go their way.

Nintendo is also capable of massive rallies, like for Melee or Pokmon. Square can only do modest rallies, like a Frog or Tifa. The biggest was Vivi, but thats an outlier.

I just cant agree that Nintendo fans are more anti rally than Square fans.

Also you seem to imply Square fans want Link and OoT beaten, which is not true. Pretty sure the majority of Square fans would greatly prefer Link and OoT to win than the likes of Draven and Undertale. Square fans arent spiteful of Nintendo - they are Nintendo fans too.

I mean this contest and I think you might be right with your point about Melee. Nintendo fans certainly supported that. And I think I shouldn't have singled out Square fans (especially since there are like you mention fans of both Square and Nintendo, including me personally) since my point was more about the anti-Nintendo people. At least for this contest, many of the people who are vocally very pro-rallies are also the same people I see upset about Nintendo always winning and wanting anyone but Link to win again, but again the sample size could be too small to judge.
