Also someone posted the match of Link/Zelda/Bidoof/Vincent and I can't help but smile by how stupid it was
The fact that Bidoof actually won a match (against Edgeworth and someone J) and then actually got more votes than Zelda (which got SFF'd by Link but still) it's pretty amazing
We need to nominiate random stupid Pokemon more often (sorry Leon)

She crushed it last round too. She'd be a really exciting one to watch like 10-15 years ago when we still had trends. Would put Sora's and Master Chief's day vote to shame.

Well, we got to figure out who is dropping Division 1 to Donkey Kong somehow.

It would be absolutely hilarious if DK did manage to win Division 1. Partly just because he's DK, but also because of the chance that he'd face every character in a single match from the fourway era in a single 1v1 contest.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/2906-division-6-round-2-pikachu-tidus-leon-vivi

I still consider Pikachu the Division 2 favorite, so all it would take is for Pikachu to not upset Mega Man (or far more improbably, for both Pikachu and DK to do so) and they'd meet in the loser's bracket.

Speaking of characters in a single match, I noticed one of today's matches has both Aerith and Captain Toad -- two characters whose names have changed since they were first in a contest (Aerith was originally Aeris, Captain Toad was originally Toad). They're different enough in that one changed due to a translation and one changed due to a different role, but it's still neat to see the changes acknowledged*.

Do we have other characters like that whose names have changed since they first entered a contest? Leonhart pointed out the other day Tifa's last name has flip-flopped between Lockheart and Lockhart...and while I think of that more as an accidental typo than a chosen change, that's still pretty neat to notice. Who else?

*Team Aeris > Aerith forever and always though

I think LMS is right re: Phoenix. The series is legit popular now. There is a reason the original trilogy is fast becoming a new SFII or RE4 for Capcom in terms of putting it on absolutely everything. And nobody really likes Chris Redfield.

Probably because it's easy and cheap, unlike localizing AAI2 or the DGS games.

Absolutely. But as publishers are keen to remind us about remasters, they wouldn't keep doing it if we didn't keep buying them.

Sure, but I doubt an AA remaster needs to sell that much to turn a profit. It's popular enough and the fanbase is rabid enough that they'll keep buying them just to support the series so it doesn't die and we don't miss out on any more games. I know that's what I do.

DK winning Division 1 would be hilarious for many reasons, but one of them would be you'd really get to see Link flexing his muscles when he puts the ape in his place after he's run roughshod over a bunch of established strong high midcarders.

So then I have a question about bandwagoning.

I don't know that DK will be bandwagoned, but the board expected him to lose in the first round and he might not have been the site favorite to beat Leon. If he beats Vivi after losing to him twice before on top of this, that could be enough to get a bandwagon surge (neverminding if he actually won the division over Ganondorf or maybe Dante).

He may not get a bit of bandwagon support, but in a scenario where he does: does losing to Link stop the bandwagon's effect for DK in the loser's bracket? Second-place finishes didn't necessarily stop some bandwagons in the past, but a loss might.

I just wonder if there's a chance we could see a bandwagoned DK in the division final before he's SFF'd to oblivion and then has his regular strength again against probably Pikachu.

Similar question may apply to other unexpected division winners left who has surprised multiple times, like Kefka somehow beating Red or whoever emerges in Division 7's bloodbath in the top half of the bracket somehow beating Auron. Does a loss stop a bandwagon effect in a double-elimination format?

I feel like you're already seeing the DK bandwagon effect just here on B8 because you didn't hear people talking about how much they'd love to see him win this division until he beat Leon.

I do think an 80/20 beatdown would probably deflate that a bit though because that would be pretty demoralizing.

BTW most of my point on Phoenix Wright was that he's notable enough now compared to, say, a decade ago, not necessarily Capcom pushing his series. The kinds of people who frequent video game-oriented websites will have likely heard of Phoenix Wright.

So in that context, yeah, Link can demoralize DK in a way Sonic or Cloud couldn't necessarily do to Geralt/Simon/Pac-Man/Bayonetta or Kefka.

If those repeat-surprisers get that far and gather a bandwagon before losing to their respective Noble Niners, it'll be interesting to see if they retain a bigger portion of their bandwagon in the losers' bracket than DK.

Okay most of my point was that I think Phoenix has enough general popularity that he wouldn't be that far from Ike or Chris Redfield popularity-wise on other sites.

When people say that a result like this wouldn't happen on any other site I usually get the impression that the GameFAQs winner would get destroyed at another site, and I don't really think that would happen to Phoenix. But I see what you mean Leon.

Match LXXXV: (1) Geralt vs. (9) Simon Belmont

Current Contest Performance

Geralt
Defeated Rosalina, 56.03% - 43.97%

Simon Belmont
Defeated Ryu Hayabusa, 50.78% - 49.22%

Analysis

After a terrible start Geralt was able to comfortably defeat Rosalina. While I felt Geralt had a great chance at being the strongest new comer to the contest I also thought Rosalina would have some strength. With the way Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters have been performing I think it is safe to say that Geralt will have some strength, but would it be enough?

The general explanation for Simons victory last round is a combination of a boost in strength for Simon and a drop in strength for Ryu Hayabusa. The question is how much of this was Ryu Hayabusa dropping. Weve seen the drop of characters like Gordon Freeman and Ezio while others have not taken such a drastic drop. Personally, I would take Simon over Rosalina, Rosalina is too new, even if shes a Mario character, but that still gives Geralt a lot of space to work with.

charmander6000s Bracket: Simon Belmont > Geralt

charmander6000s Prediction: Simon Belmont wins, 52.63% - 47.37%

Match LXXXVI: (12) Pac-Man vs. (4) Bayonetta

Current Contest Performance

Pac-Man
Defeated Sans, 71.38% - 28.62%

Bayonetta
Defeated Riku, 64.40%, 35.60%

Analysis

Id argue that Bayonettas first round victory was one of the most impressive wins of this contest and I have her going to the division finals. Yes, Kingdom Hearts is getting weaker, but she went from expected to lose 60/40 to almost winning 65/35. Honestly, given Soras performance against Red its suggested that the drop even isnt that bad. Through a combination of a sequel, Smash 4 and Ultimate Bayonetta has gone from fodder line to potentially knocking on the door of the elite.

While Pac-Mans victory was impressive I think people are forgetting that GameFAQs doesnt care about Undertale. The game was losing 65/35 to Mass Effect 3 before the rallies kicked in. Based on the registered/unregistered voter turnout Sans is only marginally more popular because of Undertales victory.

I do however wonder if Pac-Man also received a boost from being in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Ultimate. I always felt it would be minimal since everyone knows him plus, he isnt exactly a fan favourite, hes just there. It also doesnt help that hes up against a person also in Super Smash Bros. If there is no boost, we could see Bayonetta perform better than what she got in round 1.

charmander6000s Bracket: Bayonetta > Pac-Man

charmander6000s Prediction: Bayonetta wins, 65.73% - 34.27%

Match LXXXVII: (3) Auron vs. (11) Vincent Valentine

Current Contest Performance

Auron
Defeated Lucina, 65.44% - 34.56%

Vincent Valentine
Defeated Magus, 51.89% - 48.11%

Analysis

This match would have been interesting in 2010. At that time Final Fantasy VII was starting to drop and Vincents status as the number 10 character would have been in danger if he wasnt fed to Sephiroth so early. Today, it should be a relatively easy victory for Auron. Especially since Auron looked to be his usual self against a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boosted Lucina.

While I do have faith that Chrono Trigger will be stronger this contest, I dont expect it to be high enough for Vincent to be threatening. This also could be our first match with significant SFF which opens up a huge range of possibilities. If there is no or little SFF I imagine this match would have Auron winning in the low 60s, maybe Vincent could break 40%.

charmander6000s Bracket: Auron > Magus

charmander6000s Prediction: Auron wins, 68.94% - 31.06%

Match LXXXVIII: (10) Sub-Zero vs. (15) Claire Redfield

Current Contest Performance

Sub-Zero
Defeated Shulk, 62.57% - 37.43%

Claire Redfield
Defeated Ren Joker Amamiya, 53.58% - 46.42%

Analysis

Congratulations to Claire for winning her first match. Even with the name Joker listed in the poll Claire was able to edge him. Persona 5 would be the type of game GameFAQs would like, but the site doesnt play new games outside of a small selection anymore so it was expected that Ren would be weak.

Regardless, Sub-Zero should have no issue winning this match. The jury is still out on whether or not hes weaker this contest, but given his path it doesnt matter. His performance against a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boosted Shulk is more than enough to win here and lose next round.

charmander6000s Bracket: Sub-Zero > Claire Redfield

charmander6000s Prediction: Sub-Zero wins, 64.21% - 35.79%
